I feel like it's the kind of game that trys to appeal to the wannabe. You know, the kind of person who listens to Guns 'n Roses, and uses 'awesome' as a sort of all purpose adjective. The person that thinks that they might possibly start playing guitar, maybe, in the future, (so long as it's not to difficult anyway) but still considers themself an expert on the subject. Y'know, the person next to the stage at a concert wearing a slogan t-shirt. Yeah, a t-shirt wearer.

I kind of associate Brutal Legend with that kind of thing mainly cos of my friend, who shall remain nameless.
"It's like a dream world."
"I wish I was like the people in this game!"
"Isn't Ozzy Osbourne awesome?!" - This on the day after he bought the game.

Anyway, are my fears justified? Apologies for the rant, I got a bit carried away.
Ewww, Ozzy Osbourne.

Man, I hate going to get upgrades knowing exactly who I have to see to purchase them form.

I got the game a few days ago and am playing it right now. Like Schafer's other games, its funny and easy to get to grips with. I bloody love it. It helps that Im a metal head which is the main reason I brought this game. But it also introduced me to alot of Schafer's signature humour and its just a fun game to play all round. The only problem I have with it is that its too short. A game this good needs to be longer, honestly.

HA, well at least it isn't Sharon! If she had her way she'd have Robert Trujilo come in and re-record all of Lemmy's lines so she wouldn't have to pay him royalties!

I like Ozzy and I appreciate what Sharon has done for him as a human being. But man do I hate agents! Scum of the earth they are! The music world would be SO much better if all the agents went back to selling toothpaste instead of rock'n'roll.

I'm currently enjoying it for a second time thru, and I'm finding now that I've rushed thru the story and I understand all the controls and know where some of the things are, I'm having the most fun just exploring the world. Yahtzee says there's too many sandbox games out there, but I haven't seen one like this before (except maybe in screenshots of World of Warcraft). I think it's pretty daft how it is short enough to be enjoyed all the way thru during a weekend rental, but is detailed and engaging enough to also warrant owning it. After another week of playing it I'll probably put it away for a long time but I look forward to revisiting it in the future!

EDIT: Also, here's hoping for everyone's sake that Tim slates some single-player DLC. The multiplayer is fun but not something that's going to hold my interest for very long now that I have the Six Degrees achievement.

I'm all for creativity in video games, ones that go where most developers wouldn't think/dare to go, for fear something new and eccentric might scare away gamers. I've enver played it, but for these reasons it's already got a bit of respect from me.
OT: I think it's a bad idea to judge games before you play them, just because you never know what you may be missing out on.

Allow me to clarify. This is the reason why I don't want the game. Is my supposition correct?

You're worried that people who like metal will play a game about metal?
I'm not WORRIED. Anyway I'm thinking about the people who like metal for really stupid reasons. Because they think it'll make them look cool.

Metal will not make you look cool, most metalheads are looked down upon from the "in crowd" in my experience. White suburban kids wearing baggy pants and bling are the real posers.

I do not hate it. It was a good time sink. It is not the most memorable game this year, but it was fun.

I understood where you were coming from, but that one sentence made it all not matter to me. You don't know if the game is focused towards posers(your definition of which could use a little work), so why presuppose this vision upon the game? It was made by Tim Schafer, it's going to be odd and it's real themes and purposes may be hidden below the poser looking surface. Finally, what's wrong with appealing to posers and why can't you have fun with a game even though your not it's target audience? It doesn't make the banter any less funny or the gameplay any less great. Just get over it and play the game before you make assumptions like this. After all, you know what happens when we assume. ASS-U-ME.

Who knows, maybe your poser friend has actually has a decent taste in video games.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'll probably pop out and rent it some time.
I definatly advise rental first. I'm a major proponent for this game, but I understand alot of people might not want to drop 60 on it.

Okay I know exactly what this guy is talking about. He thinks that it is going to be another Guitar Hero where all of the soul of the music is stripped away and it becomes less of an appreciation of music and more of a game that borrows a cool design pallet from popular metal bands. Well luckily Brutal Legend isn't like that. It's pretty solid as far as its content is concerned (namely that of a world of metal). I had the same worries but I think that it carries the world really well and deserves a clap for that at least.

i feel offended by how accurate that description you wrote of the target of auidience for brutal legend is, because that description fits me PERFECTLY (except the guns n' roses part, i'm more like iron maiden and heavier)

off topic - i have to agree with some of the earlier comments, guns n' roses sucks now. anyone who listens to the new stuff is fag in the way kid rock is a ******. that's another thing, i don't wanna hear kid rock mentioned at all on this thread.

so what do you mean "are you're fears justified?" you didn't say you scared of anything. if mean the target audience, then no, the game's not meant for just us, you can play to! think WoW + Dethklok, or lord of the rings + Spinal Tap, or King Arthur + Tenacious D.

i have the game and trust me, it is so fucking worth the 50 benjamins. and if you're not into heavy metal, doesn't matter, the gameplay will keep you hooked and in that time you're hooked, you're mind will be adulterated to whims of heavy metal. by the way, the game is fucking hilarious! one of the attacks is called "sunrise" and when you use it, jack black says "oh mighty sun, burn the creatures and demons of this land while i enjoy coffee and bacon". and ozzy has just as many funny lines as jack black does "you look fucking TERRible!" it's hilarious, you gotta play this game.

What I read is "People who play this game will start liking metal because it's suddenly "cool to like metal"", and it'll be similar to "People who play Halo will start being fanboys of it because it's suddenly cool "to play Halo"". Or how Twilight is the greatest Vampire story every written "just because it's cool to start liking Vampires".

I kinda see where the OP is coming from, but think of it this way. The sheep who start to like metal 'cos of this game will go out, buy CDs/gig tickets/clothing/whatever, the tax from those purchases will go around the system and hopefully be put into improving the country of your origin. You get to laugh at all the posers with their "omg metallica iz best!!!111eleven1!" attitude, and their newfound-but-oh-so-lengthy love for G'N'R, the government profits off their idiocy and the games companies get more money to put into new games.

Win Win Win :)

No. I'm not saying you should buy it, but at least play the demo or rent it. What you're doing here is a whole lot of judging the book by its cover.

Granted, I didn't like the game a whole lot, but that's because I hate being roped into a quasi-RTS minigame.

I think your being a little close-minded, as well as unfair to the game itself.

The game is trying to appeal to a large a demographic as possible, It seems odd to claim anybody who isn't actually a guitar player or in a band clearly doesn't understand and is some kind of "wannabe." The Game is also trying to get people who don't fully understand the genre, to help them get into it more. It re-sparked my love for Motorhead.

It feels more like you feel some self-riotousness because you (apparently) can play an instrument and are therefore on some mighty pillar above everyone else.

Plus, while we're at it, what exactly makes listening to Guns N' Roses or Ozzy Osbourne bad? (Not counting Chinese Democracy for GNR, that's a terrible album.)

EDIT: And on a final note, YOU HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED IT. Be a little more judgmental, please.
