well, most the time when I swear online it's something like "damn, we wrecked him" or "crap, another tank" and most the time if that happens to me I just hit mute. and I try and defend people, but it's hard to argue when some 12 year old is screaming "YOU SUXXXXX I H8 U AND I FUCKED YOR MOM U NOOOOOOBBBBZOOOORZZZZZZZZ!!!111ONEONEONE"

My reaction to online douche-itude is to just agree with EVERYTHING they say. No matter what it is, just agree with it, then take it to the next level.

Some dumbass in Wisconsin is probably still waiting for me to do nasty things to him.

I once was harassed in Gears 1 for being new. They called me a "Lancer noob", of course, they were all using the noobiest weapon ever (the shotgun). So I said "so, let me get this straight, you want me to use a shotty?" They replied yes. The next round I went out and killed three of the four guys on their team, then watched as two of them quit, and the others called me a "shotgun whore".

well, noob, thats what we call a troll, and how you get over it (cause it was probably you that got flamed) is either you flame back, eventually starting a flame war, mute the troll, or go cry and be emo... you choose...
OBvious troll is obvious. And no, it wasn't me :) But if you don't belive me, you don't believe me, and that's that.
Yay, thats how you do it! now tell your friend to get the hell over it and go pwn some real noobs.

It didn't happen to me but I was there.
See some kid joined a freemode game in Gta Iv, what ended up happening was, he got a buzzard, went after everyone he could find, then some guy shot him up, the kid got very pissed off and started killing that guy every chance he got as well as yelling into the microphone.
They got into an argument and the kid would yell a lot swear words and racial slurs. I never said a word but everyone else was telling him to shut up, what ended up happening was, everyone went after the kid and forced him to leave, including me.

I never started it, however at the phrase "goddamn Jew" I tend to flip the fuck out.
Do the other players ogle you to calm you down?

On topic, no, no, yes, it's not alright, but you shouldn't take it to seriously. They're just a bunch of people throwing around nasty words that hold no real significance.
No, their imagination is not nearly high enough.
Good point, since they only know how to activate the "Racial Slur" combat operand.

I usually play cod, so when people give me shit, I just win. I play free-for-all, and that's the easiest gametype for me. The one time I played gta 4 multiplayer it was hell, because I couldn't outgun the other players who were molesting me in free mode. I prefer to stay away from halo as well, because I've lost my touch in that game.

"Erm, it's just a game. You wouldn't get this annoyed if we were playing tag, would you?"
Apparently you've never played an intense game of tag, in the dark, in middle of wooded nowhere, with your half crazy cousins. That sh*t is intense and you get really pissed when you lose.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that me not standing still for you to snipe me was critical to your pathetic existence."

Me, feeling longwinded during a demo of TF2. The guy sounded a bit confused, and karmatically d/c'd.

Mmmmmkay: Here we go

1) Yes: When I had a functioning Xbox360, I would play Halo 3 on matchmaking because, at the time, I was an achievement hunter. I don't normally like playing games on multiplayer but, even when I did get the achievements, I would still go back because of those rare, 'good games' In most of the matches I played however, there were many instances in which the people I would play against [or with in some strange cases] would get so worked up over my rare double-kill that they would talk about MODing, Hacking, etc, with many a racial slur and 4-letter word. What really got me is how many of them sounded like kids.

2) If someone really bothered me or kicked me out of a game for no good reason, I would report that player. I don't really think it did much but, there were some people who are too out there, ya know? I would seldom leave a game. Most of the time I would just turn off my mic and mute everybody else.

3) As for weather or not I've done it, I try to not do that unless I can see the person I'm playing with. I really try to keep my chatter tactical. "Who has the flag? Where did you drop it? Three coming around in a warthog. Beware of Sniper" I would complement people on good kills and if I get killed at a rate of say, 1-Death-ever-10-seconds-or-less I swear to myself depending on how much I get screwed over. I save 4-letter words for spawn kills

4) Yes however, it would be in the lobby after a bad match. I tell the person to go ---- themselves and leave for about 10 minutes or so.

5) In a passive way. I would focus all of my killing on the guy with a loud mouth. As for further defense ... see my answer to number 4

6) I don't do it myself but, I don't see the harm in trashtalk. There is a difference between being an asshole and effectively talking smack which, while it is a thin line, is different. I wouldn't go into a game and repeat George Carlin's bit about the N word, pointing out every player in black armor but, I would call someone a spawn-killing ass if that person spawn-kills me several times in a row. As a final side-note; camping IS a legitimate strategy used by shotgunners and snipers. Get over it

Now, having described why I'm making this post, here's my questions for you:

*Do you, or have you at any point had a similar experience?

Yes, many times

*How would you react if this had happened to you online?
- Would you talk back?
- Ignore?
- Leave?
- Report?

If they were attacking me directly, and they were doing worse I would talk back. Otherwise I would just ignore them, but if they were teamkilling/griefing me, I would leave

*Have you ever participated in any such activities against another online player?

I have, but only if they did it to me, or someone else who didn't deserve it

*Have you ever used curse/swearwords at people, not intending it to be a joke?

I mean everything I say, and say everything I mean.

*If you were to come across an instance where this happened to someone you were playing with, let's call it a friend, would you defend that person?

Yes, I would. If they didn't deserve it, I would defend them.

*What's your general take on bullying/harassing/using racial slur, against people online? Is it alright, or are they just pussies if they can't handle it?

I just think its fucking annoying. Just something caused by internet anonymoty(that how you spell it?). And most of them are pussies who can't handle it
I've been on both ends a lot. I play on Steam, PSN, and XBL, so I've seen all sorts of shit like this.

Not long after the release of Halo3 I signed up for a Halo3 tournament. Now I'm a decent enough player but by no means am I "hardcore". I had no delusions that I would probably get beaten in the first round but I wanted to play anyway.

As the sign-up sheet filled up I noticed that I was grouped in with some real hardcore players who'd won other tourneys within the same community. Feeling a little guilty to be "wasting space", I contacted the main guy on our team and offered to resign so that they might have a better chance of winning. I figured it was just the right thing to do. He said it was no big deal and that I should go ahead and play with them. Feeling pretty good about things I sent messages and friend requests to each member of the team and asked if we could maybe play a few rounds together and get some practice before the tourney. None of my requests were answered.

Tourney time rolls around and we all get in a lobby with the coordinator of the event and I know right away that there is going to be trouble. While the leader of the team was a nice guy who was really friendly, there was another guy who I can only describe as an asshat. There simply is no other word for it.

Before the game even starts, Asshat is bashing me because I've not had much of a chance to play and my B.net profile isn't up to his obvious standards. As we move forward he continues to *****, whine, and cry about EVERYTHING that each other member does. Every death is met with disdain and discourse about how awful each other member of the team is, even the people who are doing better than him. Every time he falls in battle, someone else wasn't watching his back. Every time I fell, I'm an idiot who's ruining his chance of winning. The lowest scorer on our team is causing us to this, The highest kill rate guy is that, on and on and on and on.

Finally, fed up with Asshat, I start walking into enemy fire without even firing back, simply hoping to expidite the end of this awful experience. Then as he berates me for it, I just laugh at him which infuriates him even further (which of course, is exactly what I'm trying to do at this point).

I'm a Halo fan. Possibly even a fanboy but that's a discussion for another day. But every time I see someone hating on Halo for what I feel is an unfair reason, I always think to myself that they must have played a round or two on Asshat's team.

my typical response is to just ask them to chill out. I remind them its a game and if this really upsets them, they have much more issues than " a fucking n00b" being on their team.

I ignore jerks on the internet, unless there is a really easy way to make them look like idiots. Then I sometimes give in to temptation.

I don't get people who get offended by anything on the Internet. I think they're all just a bunch of wussies.

I enjoy a good flamewar. It's because the other guy can never say anything that makes me even slightly annoyed, and I can troll them to no end without remorse. Good times. When I used to play WoW, I never got an instance run outside my guild, because I was ignored by all the random groupers ten minutes after the party was formed.

I'm so proud of myself.

Those people are sad people. They suck in everyday life, in which they don't have a chance to talk down on people, so they do it online, anonymous to people they have never known and will never know.
That was a strange sentence D:
