That's gonna kill my enjoyment of reach somewhat (totally my own fault though) because I hate any fight you have to lose. It's like the following Starcraft 2 spoiler
the final mission in that memory crystal where you're the protoss fighting wave after wave of zerg/protoss hybrids. No way to win except to lose.)
Yeah - although when my brother played that, he was too good - he had to suicide...
He would have lost eventually I suspect. The simple weight in numbers (and the fact they are unlimited) would eventually lead to an erorsion of his forces as minerals and gas started to dwindle. He was certainly taking losses, just presumably very slowly.

Great ending in my opinion and the death of the spartans could actually be unexpected. (I knew they would die) Kat died in a way that seemed like what would happen in an actual battle. No bull s*#t sacrifice myself, which I thought they might do with every character. Not that it is a bad thing if one or two characters did that (and they did). Just not all of them.
Three of them clearly and knowingly sacrifice themselves. Jorge goes down setting off the bomb on Operation Uppercut, Emile offers to stay behind to cover the Pillar of Autumn (which would have inevitably lead to him being overrun the same as you were in the end) and Carter jams his pelican into a Scarab to clear the way to the pad. The sniper (who's name I never remember), may have died destroying a facility. Kat was, apparently, too damn stupid to turn on her freakin' shield as a single shot to the head from a needle rifle is no where near sufficient to punch through even on the hardest difficulty.

Ending it on an interactive note like that was taking advantage of the unique abilities of gaming as a medium like Bungie has never done. I really love Halo's story as a whole, but they've never done anything quite like that. It was really, really good.

I actually thought it was quite a powerful ending. I went down fighting, and fight well I did. But something changed as I thought. I wanted to kill those covenant and make them pay for what they did, but after 10 minutes of increasing amounts of enemies, depleting ammo and being backed into a corner, I'd lost all will to keep playing. I knew I was officially fucked, I just wanted to escape.

To bring about that sense of feeling in a game, its not easy. But I couldn't escape, so I hoisted the gun, sprinted at the nearest group of elites, and went down bashing the living shit out of them.

No spartan could ask for a more fitting death.

It was sad of course, but they had to do it to remain in Canon : Halo wouldn't be the same if Master Chief was one of two surviving spartans. He had to be the only one.

I didn't mind the last-stand ending ultimately ending in my death it was pretty powerful. But part of me kinda wished I'd seen him actually die, fighting until the end, as it is obscured behind the Elites.

Although I must admit when I saw 'survive' I was actually expecting to have to make a futile attempt to survive the planet being glassed instead of battling my way through my final moments.

I think the "powerful"ness of the last level was entirely determined by how long you lasted.

I stood on the tower thinking "wait, what am I supposed to do now? survive?" and I took a plasma bolt or grenade hit that knocked me off, into immediate death by...something below.

Wasn't as powerful as they were probably hoping,...but in the cinematic I was kicking ass!

I feel it's the first emotional thing I've ever felt in a Halo game.
I've had many.

Halo: CE.. Capitan Keyes Dying, i thought he would survive, but he was stupid enough to get infected by the flood, poor guy.
Bck in the day, that was quite upseting...for me anyway.

Halo 2...The Arbiter getting tortured at the beginning...felt really sorry for him.

Halo 3... Johnson dying...

I nearly cried, i loved that guy!

But i admit, Halo: Reach did have the best emotional bit in it. If you pay close attention their are many emotional moments within the Halo Universe.

I hate to be "that guy", but Master chief isn't the only remaining spartan. There are others too. But most of them are dead.

Is it just me or didn't Jun die? He just escorted Halsey off the planet.

And Jorge got teleported... Somewhere, with an intact covenant corvette and 2/3 of a super carrier :p

I'm aware that in the books there were other Spartans like Kelly etc, (I did read first strike after all), but as far as the games were concerned, Master Chief was the only one that in any case could make a difference.

I refused to die until I ran out of ammo. No ammo, surrounded by enemys, no hope. I ran up to the closest fucker I could see and started beating down, I survived, moved on to the next fucker. Rince and repeat till I was surrounded, so I stuck the nearest elite and ran into it. I felt badass yet annoyed that I had no chance. I got Reach expecting good custom games and a amazing forge. I never liked halo's campaign, but I liked Reach's. Best in the series in my opinion, one of the best Xbox exclusive games. Hell, for me the best Xbox exclusive game. Too bad it will likely be rapidly changed (I suspect for the worst, but hey I could be suprised) by whoever MS pays to make the next Halo game.
And all this from a Sony fanboy...

No complains here about the ending, that part was awesome, but Kat's death... c'mon, could you really not think of anything better to do with that?
I disagree. Most of the Spartans went out in a blaze of glory, so it was nice to see a death that was sudden and without warning, which is probably more realistic anyway.

It's a good way for Bungie to say goodbye to the Halo franchise, and it also fits in (loosely) with the cannon set down by the books.
I hope to actually PLAY the ending one day, instead of watching/reading/listening to it.

I still wanted to see one spartan go batshit and kill some UNSC, particularly Halsey. I mean they got kidnapped, forced not only to train throughout their entire childhood but also endure extremely dangerous mechanical augmentation to use the mjolnir suits, and none of them figures it out, or even gets remotely pissed? However, I suppose that's the point. The tragedy is that none of them ever do.
