This shit is very much real in Mexico. People die every day on the borders, and the Mexican military has to deal constantly with bombings, kidnappings, and open assault. Its at the point where the police need to have tanks in Mexico in order to crack down on the Cartels. That's not even scratching the surface on corruption either. Its one of the reasons that I did not support the legalization of marijuana in California.
The HORROR! The horror that is this paragraph. I think it burned my eyes. /hyperbole

It did make me shout "What?" several times. The logical flaws in this statement are just horrendous. Conflation and "thin end of the wedge" are things that come to mind.
Congratulations sir. I hope you didn't hurt yourself on those big words. Turn on your local spanish news and you will see a news story about the latest actions in the Drug War. Its very much real and very much a problem. But you don't have to believe me.
I didn't actually see any big words in that post, but whatever. The point (lol, pun intended) of Strobe's post was that you decry the evils produced by the "Drug War" and then say you didn't support legalizing marijuana. The problem there being that if we legalized these drugs, rather than fighting a futile and expensive "war", the drug cartels causing a near civil war in Mexico would almost instantly lose all their funding as legitimate businesses produced cheaper and safer drugs. The most lethal blow we can deliver to the drug cartels is to just legalize the crap.
You don't know what will happen if marijuana is legalized. The cartels could just as easily legally sell their drugs. But I won't argue with you, seeing as we have different opinions on the problem.

Wanna bet the sherriff was sitting on top of the tank wielding a claymore and shouting 'Drive me closer! I want to hit them with my sword!'?

Also, that tank clearly should have more american flags attached to it. Y'know, so everyone can see it's a real patriotic vehile of civil service and not some evil godless north-korean tank invading the states.

That's a poultry display of fire power. I hope there wasn't anyone egging him on in this fowl attack on his liberties. He might have deserved a bit of bird but this seems really chicky. I hope this plucky farmer was able to egg-stricate himself.

Well I could see your point but I said support, not vote for. I don't live in California. And it might be surprising for an American, but I thought that an escalation of the drug war might be a bad thing for the people living there. I don't think pot is a horrible drug nor am I against the legalization of the drug but the fact that other people would die for those drugs is not something I could live with.

I'll be as high and mighty as I wish to be. If that upsets you then too bad. Don't talk to me.
Err, I'm British... Just so you know. Since you typed don't talk to me I'll not go any further. Thank you for the conversation.

OT: This is stupid.

I'm surprised they let the sherrif paint his tank like a 12 year old's hot wheel.
And...is that his own tank, or did they borrow it off someone with a legitimate reason for having one?

But, having said that, I know where I'm not going to commit crimes...anywhere they don't blow their police budgets on tanks.

Can you imagine somee poor bastard having to justify a tank to journalists?

"We take child prostitution very seriously...unfortunately due to resource allocation [small]on upgrading our MBT squadrons[/small] we are not always able to...um..."

I really wish they did that kinda stuff in this country, at least police in the US actually have a degree of power.. though using a tank to bust a guy for raising chickens is a bit far..

Are you nitwits really believing that (poorly photoshopped) self-propelled artillery piece was used in a SWAT operation?

Did you watch the linked-to video? Did the OP?

Excessive force, sure; armored SWAT vehicles -which have next to nothing in common with howitzers- are still overkill in this situation.
But the use of them in police actions as such is nothing special.

Oh, and Seagal is a desperate has-been who has apparently made some nitwitted Sheriff believe he can ride his has-been fame all the way to the next election.
Shock. Horror.

EDIT: After consulting the all-knowing internet for a moment, it seems like this Sheriff could indeed think up something like this. Still not sure about that picture, though; looks fishy to me. And using a howitzer for a bust-in is not just overkill, but outright silly.
Seems like there's a lot to hang this guy up on without having to resort to 'shops of "police tanks".

I hope you feel good about your self.

thanks for that

nice tank but how the hell do they let the police force have a fucking howizter.
The War on Drugs? is "serious business".

Apparently the government decided that the only reason Prohibition failed was because they didn't enforce it hard enough.

Couldn't have anything to do with people feeding their vices whether the government likes it or not. Not at all.

Well, if you want to make a point, no sense in being subtle about it; and this is about as far removed from subtlety as you could possibly get.

Nice job on the wordplay.

OT:
As they say: "If it's worth doing, it's worth OVERDOING."

OR

"There's no kill like OVERKILL."

Also, cockfighting is SRSBZNS here in the Philippines. Lots of money to be made (most likely lose) on raising a prizefighting cock (that sounded weird) or betting on the fights. If that seems awful, blame those Spaniards who left us this little cultural tidbit.

Seriously, every police force should have a tank.

Talk about a deterant for criminals. Don't break the law or will show up at your door stop with a tank.

I wasn't aware that police forces commonly needed to make use of self propelled artillery. Actually, I can't think of a single instance where self-propelled artillery would be a remotely good idea for police use.

Sure, it's got armor and it's intimidating as all hell but in complex urban terrain you can't exactly use one of those without risking the lives of people who have nothing to do with the current problem. If you simply use it for intimidation I suppose that's all well and good and if it is cheaper than any of the numerous (and substantially more useful) armored vehicle options available for a police force then I might be able to see why one would go that route. Assuming of course those responsible for making that decision were also incapable of realizing the utility of armor for police use is simply allowing for SWAT members to close with a target structure at relatively little risk to the officers.
