I've also enjoyed the New Super Mario Bros 1+2 and SMB 3D Land. The games do make it hard to lose by allowing you to easily farm early levels for extrs lives, and they are also a little slower than the originals. But they do introduce the challenge of collecting big coins which in many cases are interesting puzzles (although most aren't hidden or tricky at all).
I found lives just came naturally. After beating NSMB2's 'final' Bowser level I had over 300 lives. Going back to get a few star coins I missed I have well over 500 now, haven't farmed intentionally once!

These 2 games along with Pokemon X and Y are the reasons I decided to get the 3DS, there are just so many better games than on the VITA and the Wii U. I plan on getting Fire Emblem in about 2 weeks, and after that Monster Hunter soon after, and it's Monster Hunter I am most excited about. I have never played Tri, so playing Ultimate will be a fresh experience for me.
Excellent choice, I have to wait to play Fire Emblem as it doesn't come out until April where I live, at least Monster Hunter seems to have pretty synchronized release dates[footnote]Exluding the Japanese version of course.[/footnote]. I've never played a Fire Emblem or a Monster Hunter game before but those two games look like very strong places to start each series.

This would probably make so much more sense if I actually played the game, or looked up information on it. In an effort to avoid spoilers I basically ran away from anything that would remotely reveal what might happen in the game's story, so I will be going in blind. Thank you for the advice though, I am sure I will in all likelihood understand what your saying when I play a few hours of it.
Yeah, I was purposely trying to be very vague for that reason, lol. You seemed to be aware you get to play Sora and Riku, so I just ran with that. You'll get it soon enough :D

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, Ultimately I bought a nice Cosmo Black 3DS and it's in the process of charging. Even more exciting is the fact that I just got Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance as my first title to play on it. I can't wait for the 3DS to finish charging so I can get back playing with my old friends Sora and Riku.
Nooooo, why didn't you do...

Don't buy a 3DS today. Wait till tomorrow and buy this:
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/14/fire-emblem-awakening-3ds-bundle-retails-for-200/

A special 3DS and Fire Emblem for less than the regular 3DS and the game together.
...instead?

Personally I always, ALWAYS, regret that I never by the special edition handhelds because I buy the system early on. I missed the Gold Zelda DS and the slick black Zelda 3DS. Now that there's finally a Fire Emblem 3DS you should've gotten that - it's cheaper (slightly) than buying them separately and you get a bigger memory card too.

Plus it looks freakin' awesome

It's quite simply because I didn't have enough money for it. It's fine, not a big loss really.

Well, you were going to buy a system and a game right? The cost of the bundle is more or less the same. I guess it just came down to whether or not you wanted a regular 3DS and a game you actually wanted to play, or a nicer system with a game that you didn't want as much.

Kingdom Hearts took priority over Fire Emblem, and since I have no mode of transportation save for my friend who I hang out with once every month, is was either get a game now or get a game a month later. A month from now, I would have enough money to buy Fire Emblem, so I might of as well bought a game today instead of waiting. That wouldn't make very much sense. Plus I was on a budget and that system went over it.

Put some money on the eShop and download Pushmo and Crashmo, Puzzle Platformers that are just insanely fun. Code for Princess has been getting great reviews as well, another downloadable only I believe, it's a side scroller fighting thingy.

Also, Lego LOTRO is GREAT.

If you're a fighting game enthusiast, why buy DoA when you could buy BlazBlue or Street Fighter?

because blazblue forces you to use the 3ds d-pad instead of the joystick, which is apparently extremely painful.

also the 3ds street fighter is just like 4 apparently and street fighter 4 is a shit game so I have no idea why you would want that.

I am also playing this right now, and my best advice to you is only try to use the 3D during cutscenes. It works, but only when you're holding the 3DS completely still, which is impossible when you're hacking and slashing away. Also, to switch between Sora and Riku in the game you use a function called "drop." Just to get the story to make sense, the way I did it was when you first start a world with one, after you're done with the first few cutscenes drop to the other character and get them started as well. That way you know where each of them is starting.

And don't forget to use flowmotion. It's FUN once you get the hang of it :3
My god....THAT IS FUN! Holy crap, I'm bouncing off of walls like a squirrel on crack.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Tales of the Abyss
Theatrythm Final Fantasy
Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance
Resident Evil: Revelaitons
Star Fox 64 3D
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Luigi's Mansion 2
Mario Kart 7
New Super Mario Bros. 2

All decent games(or decent looking for the ones not out yet). You also have access to the whole Nintendo DS library.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Justice for All
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Apollo Justice Ace Attorney
Miles Edgeworth Ace Attorney: Investigations
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Megaman Zero Collection
Megaman Battle Network: Double Team
Picross
Picross 3D

Those are the only DS games I can recall off the top of my head that are absolutely delicious games. But thar ya have it. the 3D aspect was a neat trick at first but then I took an arrow in the knee and got over it. It doesn't cause me pain or anything of the sort. I've just never been one for the whole motion controls and 3D tricks Nintendo's been using as of late.

Buying a 3DS Today! Any Suggestions
Yes. Don't.

Hilariously outdated with the invention of the smartphone, games are ridiculously overpriced and honestly still mostly pieces of shit. There are *free* smartphone/iphone apps that give hundreds of hours of enjoyment, or you could be a sucker and drop hundreds of dollars on a 3DS, and $30-40 per game on titles like Star Fox the Re-release of the Re-release or Pilot Wings the Re-release, both of which offer maybe 5-10 hours of enjoyment tops (and that's with a lot of fucking replaying Pilot Wings, because that game is short as hell).

All in all, 3ds is a waste of time - a relic of an older generation, still flailing around trying to catch up with what the PSP had last gen, but without realizing that the PSP was *also* a huge failure and that gaming-dedicated handheld devices are simply falling farther and farther behind phones that can play a wider range of better games for less money.

Oh, and 3d is still an awful gimmick that offers no gameplay depth to any of its titles to date.
