I'm buying a PS3 next week and I need some recommendations. I'm definately buying Gran Turismo 5 is there anything else that is a must have?

Also how is the online service? It's not a huge deal for me as I don't play much online, I'm just curious.

DEMONS SOULS! Edit: Seriously.. I would put it down as arguably the best overall RPG of the last decade. Its unbelievably addicting once you get the hang of it, or so my 258 hour save file tells me.

The online service is mostly solid. Perhaps not as intuitive as XBL, but more than solid enough in its own right. Wouldnt know about the PSN community though as I really dont like playing with other people online much any more. Too tedious.

Online works fine for me, the PSN is nice. Not as fleshed out as XBOX Live, but it works fine for playing online, the chat is lacking however. I recommend getting the PS Plus, but some people don't like it. I enjoy the free demo's and free games you get once or twice a month. Depending on the type of gamer you are it may not be worth it.

What kind of games do you like? I can give you a list of some of my favorites when you let me know.

Anyway, Little Big Planet has an amusing charm to it if you're looking for a more relaxing game. The Uncharted series offers a bit of platforming and shooting fun, especially carried over into its multiplayer.

Demon's Souls, Little Big Planet, Infamous. All great games. The online usually works fine, but if you want to talk realize not everyone has a microphone and you need to get one yourself. Also if you are into driving games I have had a fun time with Motorstorm.

If you're just getting into the new generation of consoles there are plenty of older games I would recommend picking up before anything else, especially considering most of them are now $10-20 on Amazon.

One game I quite often recommend to people is Valkyria Chronicles. The best way to describe it would be a 1st/3rd person turn based military skirmish with a cell-shaded/anime-esque look and feel.

Disgaea 3, ModNation Racers, NewVegas PS3 (supposed to have the least problems), Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet (wait for 2 in a month or so), and various others I can't quite seem to name at the moment.

welcome to (in my opinion, so please dont take this as a jab) the best console there is!

like people have said, demons' souls is good, but they havent warned you about the ridiculous difficulty. so be warned.

uncharted series, because 1 is pretty fun, but 2 is ASTOUNDINGly fun!

infamous is really fun and has a pretty slick story.

if you liked ratchet and clank, a crack in time is by far the best one, with a story that i can actually remember + massive gameplay level design improvements.

i dont know whether you have a 360, you didnt mention, but grab assassins creed ii. the first one was slightly above mediocre, but certainly not excellent. not really that much story you need to know anyway.

finally, psn is very much weaker than xbox live, but its free! and it works, mostly.

First of all, you should really consider trying to get your hands on one of the first-run 60 GB models that still has all of the features that were taken out of the Slim like Wireless LAN and PS2 backwards compatibility.

Great PS3 Exclusive Games that I recommend:
Demon's Souls
Metal Gear Solid 4
Yakuza 3
Valkyria Chronicles
Heavy Rain

For multi-platform titles, I suggest:
Anything that's not a steaming pile of rushed work and cash-in intentions.

I hope, if you're buying a PS3 Slim, that you're getting the largest HDD capacity available (which is 320 GB right now). Some games require installation of varying sizes, Metal Gear Solid 4 is very guilty of this going so far as to have install screens where you watch Snake smoke cigarettes. I'm unaware of official reasons, but I'd wager to cut down on wear n' tear of the Blu-Ray drive and to also speed up load times or file access during play.

If you plan to chat online during gameplay, the PS3 will accept any USB headset or Bluetooth earpieces. Also, the Slim PS3 model lacks Wireless LAN, unlike the hulking behemoth model.

The PlayStation store offers a lot of smaller downloadable titles also of varying quality. There's a PSone Classics section that offers American classics as well as Japanese titles that never made it overseas. PLEASE NOTE: The PS3 Slim is already backwards compatible for PSone games on discs! So don't repurchase any PSone games you already own a real copy of, they'll work in the system.

Before you get anything on the PS3, get PSN cards and get games on PSN. Spyro 1-3, Echochrome, Crash Bandicoot 1-3, Final Fantasy VII-IX/Tactics, Rayman 1-2, PixelJunk Shooters, Fat Princess, flOw, Flower, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, etc. And it gets even better if you have a PSP since there are games like Persona Portable, LocoRoco 1/2, Half Minute Hero, Disgaea 1/2, and Patapon 1/2.

Those games are much cheaper and are more entertaining than plenty of $60 games on the PS3. After that though, I would suggest getting Demon's Souls, Killzone 2, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Valkyria Chronicles, and Uncharted 1/2. You should also listen to the recommendations of inFamous, ModNationRacers, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 1/2, etc.

I usually play whatever though I'm not a huge fan of RPG unless there is a twist to it like Mass Effect. Also I'm not big on music games and FPS.

Metal Gear Solid the essential collection and 4. Also Bad Company 2. I play that on the Xbox 360 but I'm pretty sure it's a great experience for anybody.
