If you buy games to make it seem as you are in gaming *cough* culture *cough* then I must say you are a tad bit pathetic and need to set your priorities straight.

I don't do that, but there are several games I meant to play, but just never got around to. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Myst, Amnesia and both The Witcher games are sitting in my Steam library unloved(well technically the first Witcher is sitting on my shelf uninstalled).

Nope, even though I buy a lot of cheap games that I still havent played, none of them were because of other people simply liking it.

Some games have to be played to see what the fuss is about but to just be able to tell someone that I played it, no.

I've played less than an hour of Star Ocean 4 ... I couldn't play it, it just bored me right from the get go.

Yet I will still claim I played it.

I also technically speaking own Spec Ops the Line on steam, though I've never downloaded or played it. But I don't claim to have played it.

Also I own a steam game called Arx Fatalis, that I never brought but some how just appeared in my library one day. I guess it was free with another game I brought or something? But anyway I haven't downloaded or played it ether and haven't even ever bothered to look up the game to find out what it is.

I don't have the income to justify buying games to be "in the loop."

Though even if I did, I wouldn't. No reason to play a game unless I'm actually interested in it. (Ex: I have Bastion and Braid from a Humble Bundle and have yet to play them.)

Well, I play all the Call of Duty games just so I can know what I'm talking about when I say they're shit.

But I don't purchase them I borrow them, so I can't really say I buy games just to say I've played them.

I do buy games on ridiculous sale even if I don't intent to play them. But I don't think that's the same thing you're talking about.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

It was in a bundle with two other games, for less than 3 bucks. Although I loved their Penumbra series, I just can't get into horror games nowdays.

Eh? I mean I guess if you hang around people who actually care about those things it could be meaningful, but who the hell cares about what games you've played? I guess you're right, there are some people who say "what you haven't seen this movie? Watch it now!" or "What? You haven't played this game? play it now!" but they're just annoying and I smile/agree and say I will knowing full well I never will.

In the end I'd rather annoying the tossers by saying I haven't played their favorite piece of gold, I'm not going to go out and buy Kingdom Hearts (good example) unless for some reason it interests me.

But hey to each their own, just know that doing something not because you want to but because you think others want you to is not conducive to enjoying yourself.

I'm guilty of that, I needed to get people off my back when I tried to say Black Ops (my first COD, COD4 soon followed)/every COD after 4 was garbage..... I was correct minus zombies.

If I can remember correctly Kingdom Hearts 2 I got as soon as I went into Jr. High. All I saw in elementary was people gawking over the thing, bringing in their KH2 strategy guides, talking about how awesome the combat and story was (I assume they didn't "understand" the story... I mean what kid back in 2002 did?). Funny considering it all changed once COD got popular in Jr High. Boasting about KH2 wasn't popular anymore... goddamn dense teen years. As for the game, not bad, I can see why people liked it so much.

Now I buy based off either word of mouth, clear signs of quality, or if I have the money to blow and I find the game interesting. Like a decent human-being.

For me, that would be Poker night at the inventory, because it was the only game i could buy with the money i had at the time.

I rarely pick up what I'm not interested in, no matter how aggressive friends and family are about me playing it. I have become interested in games because others talk about it so much, such as Dark Souls and BlazBlue, but I can't really say that I've ever picked it up just so I could say that I played it.

That seems like a massive waste of money...and not a foolproof way to actually get someone to believe you actually played said game.

That said, I'll try a game to see if I like it or not. That's what demos are for after all.

This just seems like insanity and a potential waste of money.

So no, I cannot say I have ever been guilty of that.

I would do that...

But then my normal budget doesn't, so when I buy games I try to make sure that I will enjoy playing that game before I buy them.

Hell I still need to get up on my backlog of games I want to play.
Still need to buy Catherine for example.

My disposable income is to thin to be able to buy games for such a flimsy reason.

I've only ever bought games because I fully intend to play them for personal enjoyment.
In most cases, those titles are purchased on sale or after natural price drops.

In addition, my precious free time can be better spent doing something I actually want to do.
I really can't relate to the OP at all on this one.

I buy games I want to buy. If a game is critically acclaimed or well loved, I might buy it to try it, but I don't buy anything to show I have it.

Quite the opposite. Some games I wish didn't show up in my library.

Usually after I've tried them. There are some games I'll never play because they came in a package.

That's actually a really good question. I'm inclined to say Killzone 3. I actually had to force myself to finish that game (as I said in another thread I made). Others include SOCOM 1 and 2. I bought them but ended up liking them. Same goes with the Metal Gear franchise (on the ps2. I have yet to play Guns of the Patriots). But the shining example is definitely Killzone 3.
