My brother is a massive pirate and uses the computer that I use. Shit I better not be blamed for something I didn't do. This is insane. I can't believe Canada agreed with this thing.

There is a chance that this could pass but I doubt it because some of the people inforcing these laws might find important information like credit card numbers, and use your information for different perposes. Identity theft would Skyrocket and there would be thousands upon thousands of people losing all there money, plus protests of epic proportions. It would mean the end of the internet, even if you use software that you didnt create or own[ probably includes explorer, firefox, google chrome] it will be illegal

Love the foil-hat crowd, really. Since I don't pirate, file-share, or use P2P networks (except for their lawfully intended purpose, ie Skype), I'm not so worried about the Trilateral Commission or the Bilderberg Conference or ACTA bringing Hulkamania down on me.
ACTA is worded to make it illegal for you to view any website. Since you have to download a copy of every image to your computer to even view it, just loading the escapist is enough to ban you from the internet.

This isn't tinfoil, they are the insane ones here.

This is going to hit everyone with a computer and a net connection in the concerned countries. I'll eat my own face if they manage to properly enforce this.

Oh wow, I just realized that all forms of streaming websites, including pornographic ones, will be illegal.

Effective next month: masturbating is punishable by law.

The method is flawed, the goal is flawed. Pirates contribute more to the entertainment industry than non-pirates. When will they realize?
Is flawed your way of saying the first step to 1984?
First step? More like a fucking marathon to 1984. This is absolutely terrible, and if it wasn't a treaty would be breaking several pre-existing US laws, and presumably their equivalents in other countries.

EDIT: Also,

I'll bet money the responsible parties already have their fingers on the "shut down" button, ready to "temporarily" discontinue all current service to all of their customers and locking them into a very small walled garden that will, as time passes, slowly gain more content as deals are struck between the ISPs and content providers.

As ACTA makes the current model of the internet illegal.

Do you have a single copyrighted song, picture or video on your computer? Do you ever view videos on Youtube that have copyrighted music? If so, you'll be breaking the law. Still so sure it won't effect you?

I don't think this will pass. But if it does, there will be MASSIVE protest rallies in every capital city in the world with access to internet. We'd probably see one of the biggest protest movements since the civil rights and Hippie rallies, all calling for the demise of this treaty.

And what's to stop this from becoming bigger? Already this is violating many nations' civil rights, so what's to stop those enforcing ACTA from adding more amendments onto the treaty to give them more control over the web and public as a whole?
No there won't. It's all back room bullshit. Most people will never know. Besides, people don't protest anymore, they'll just riot.
Stop trying to incite fear. Don't even pretend to act like that isn't what you're doing, either.

You're trying to make it sound like if I so much as search for an image that happens to have been copyrighted, guys in black suits are gonna come and lock me into a fucking hole for the rest of my life.

Tone your god damn posts down. You're overreacting.

Eh. We're not really heading towards an Orwellian society, more of a Huxlian one. Ruled by pleasure, not by pain, that kind of thing.

To anyone stating the people will never let this happen. Remember the Patriot Act? It's 2010 and it hasn't been revoked yet.

... Hes not trying to incite fear, that is, literally, how ACTA is worded. Three accusations of copyright infringement and you're in jail and permanently banned from ever having internet access.

Wait, does that include copyrighted material that has been purchased? If yes, that's bad. If no, that's really terrible wording. Hopefully enough to see the Treaty thrown out, but we'll see.

Guys in black suits won't come to your house. What they will do instead is use an intricate system. 3 strikes of having copyrighted material saved on your computer and you're banned from the internet.

This isn't overreaction at all. To give the government so much power is absolutely insane.

Another thought: If a lot of people do protest against this like I'm sure everyone here is hoping, how well do you think a huge group of people crying "revolution" will maybe convince governments otherwise?

How many people will compare this to a communism? After all, we compared something as trivial as healthcare to a communist society. I'm sure, this, considering how completely controlling this is, will inspire many people with thoughts that all around the world, governments are adopting communist policies. If people were to do that, then there would be a huge outcry for revolution, this may, in turn, cause governments to stop taking bribes and start thinking for themselves....just a hopeful thought.

p.s: pardon any spelling errors, my hands are freezing and that is impeding my typing ability. brrrrrrr

Yes, it does. You have to copy it to even have it. Which you're not allowed to do under ACTA.

The biggest problem is, to understand how the treaty criminalizes net neutrality, you need to know something about how the internet and computers in general work at all. Which means we're fucked.
