Can't answer the poll seeing how if I ever want to play any of my Final Fantasy games I just pop in the disks. (Don't see the point in buying a virtual copy of a game I already own, y'know?)

I enjoyed VIII quite a bit and you've hit the proverbial nail on the head calling it a flawed diamond, it's a good game, but it's got some serious issues, didn't stop me from playing it through three or four times though.

yeah mate you're talking about that now, but I've been more than balanced in my review and have justified my reasons for thinking what I do, whereas your opening argument was basically "ff8 is teh suck", it's only now you're talking about people "disagreeing" and "offering other subjective opinions, as is their right to do".

So yeah, saying that people are stupid for liking this game because it's a part of their childhoods does, shocker, offend them. I had nothing in my review that said that people who didn't like the game were fucking idiots, yet I got the exact opposite response back from you.

If you're looking for a civilised discussion about it then yeah fine, but stop using words like "taste" in sentences you present as facts.

Look I know the game is flawed, in fact I spent half of the review acknowledging them. I like it because I did liked it as a child and I recently picked it up again, it brought back memories and it isn't actually the worst game ever. That's it. That's what the whole review was about.

While I generally like JRPGs, FF8 was atrocious.

Combat was balls, as even this apologetic review notes. Characters were annoying, unlikeable and dull. The entire plot was atrociously contrived. Basically, aside from some pretty CGI cutscenes and a hot teacher in a tight skirt with a whip, the game offers absolutely nothing. It fails as a game and it fails as a story. Somewhat decent visual design isn't nearly enough to make up for all that...

I like how I have to justify why I'm trying to convince people that it's ass as though that's unimaginably weird, but the guy who wrote the frickin review doesn't have to justify why he's trying to convince people that it's good. Hey, why don't you ask domble why he's so desparate to convince everyone that it's good by writing a positive review? No? Hey, you know what? This is a gaming discussion forum, not a fanboys agreeing with each other forum. I feel like discussing what's wrong with this game.

But you're a bit behind asking me to "explain myself" considering I've already posted a two lengthy posts about shit that's wrong with this game. Feel free to defend the writing (like that abysmal orphanage plot twist), or that laughable romance or the horrible gameplay.
Major misjudgement.
Domble doen't try to convince anyone to think anything. He posted a review, and a pretty well written one i might add. And that's it!

Major misinterpretion.
What you do is not discussing. It's called accusing others to be stupid and/or immature if they dare to like the thing. Arguing is something different my friend.

Major misconception.
I didn't ask you to elaborate why it's so unbelievably bad. You've done that, thank you. What i want to know is why fell so much hate for a frickin game that you feel it's necessary to start offending people not agreeing with you. So i ask again? Did it kill your family?

Yahhh but I still love it. Did you really think the review was apologetic? I thought I was quite harsh at points lol.

I have to disagree on the characters part, I thought the way they interacted with each other was great, and had a lot of quirky personality traits. Just me though.

Got any favourites in the series?

What, I never said that! The hell? Didn't anyone ever teach you about quotes and verbatim? :p

I never said anyone was stupid either. I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just not shying away from laying out the facts. 10 year olds are naive, this is a fact. 10 year olds are not known for their good taste. This is also a fact. Claiming you like this game based on the fact that you liked it as a 10 year old and it brings back good memories does not make it good. That's just what I see as the facts. There's no need to be offended by it.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the review. It was well written and fun to read. I just don't agree with some of the points. It did feel apologetic because despite saying "Combat sucks" and "Villains suck" and "Over 80% of the game sucks" you still claim it's a diamond. It tells me you love the game despite its flaws, but that the flaws are still there and are quite significant.

The characters interacted, sure. Fish in a pond interact as well. However, I found the quality of the interaction to be atrocious. As an example, at the point where the main characters realize they all just happened to be from the same orphanage (or something to that effect, it's been a while) I literally had to turn off the game and couldn't touch it for a few days (the only other piece of media that had that effect on me was the new Star Trek movie). Also, the utter inabilty of the characters to have a normal conversation that didn't hinge on dramatic silences and long significant gazes doesn't help matters. It just makes it the FF equivalent of Twilight...

As for my favourites, that title goes to FF9. Back-to-basics combat and gameplay, executed with polish, a solid storyline with a clearly defined villain, likeable and varied characters, great visuals, etc. FF6 is also pretty sweet, but I missed it during its prime and only got to play it a few years ago, so it didn't make an impression on me that it might have had.

Hi Im the guy that skiped all the reading in this game series and found it to be a lot more entertaining to fill in the blanks. This installment like the authour I to have a complex history with this installment of a series, that has been spiraling into disaray due to the creators mind set. I found the game to incorperate improvments and add-on's to the sucessful previous games design and story structure that was both interesting to fiddle with as well as being a custer fuck. It was better than the seven in alot of ways as the summon list shows and from what I see only fultered in the main protaganist and final boss. Also For half the game I thought squall was a chick and was still in denial until kingdom hearts.

Said my peice hope you enjoyed

Hahahah, try defending the game for a change. I like it how everyone has time to ask why I'm criticising the game or mumble about how it's all subjective but no one actually wants to sit down and write an actual post that defends, for example, the orphanage sequence.

Why I am I critising it? I feel like it. Oh noes! Are you actually going to defend it?

I'm offended because you're being offensive. I just said that 80% of the thing is broken myself, you really think that I'm upset because you chided my precious gamey-wame?

Look I'm really not trying to convince anyone of anything, I just wanted to put why I like it in writing, and I think I did a pretty good job, even if I do say so myself. It's not my favourite game ever, it's not even my favourite of the series. You don't like it? That's cool, it really is, but you're acting like my opinion is some kind of affront or battle cry - and I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Seriously, I just wanted to write about a game from a while ago that's just been re-released. Can we drop it now?

I don't want you to get the impression I'm picking on you or something. It was a pretty good review, and I'm glad you were honest about the flaws. If I didn't like your review a bit, I wouldn't even bother posting. But I'm blunt. I don't like the game, and I'm not going hide that. I want to hear people justify why they think this game is good, because I just don't get it. The only way I can understand it is that they like it because they played it at a young age and now they're nostalgic about it. You admit that's a big part of why you like it, and that fits my understanding. That's fine.

Wow, good question.

Let's see... I loved the variations in rewards you got for the side quests - like the phoenix pinion for the Shumi Village or having a random "fuck you" fight ender with Odin - although that harks to the overwrought spell summoning thing I mentioned in the third section.

I also liked how the GF abilities let you convert items into other items. I'm a consummate RPG fan, so seeing items that give me an extra 10% to something gives me a mental boner lol.

Also if I'm completely honest sometimes the love interest angle was slightly hokey, in the real world if a hot girl was constantly denied by a guy being a prick she'd probably shag his best friend as an act of revenge then forget the whiny tosser. In fact Rinoa was probably going to do this, but Squall didn't actually have any friends... I wish I put that part in now lol

I also liked how, if you just kept looking, there is always something else to do, but that feeling was overshadowed by me playing oblivion a few years later lol

There are some other things too, but does that answer your question?

That's cool mate... The problem with forums is that that kind of detail about a person is hard to spot, and it's easy to misconstrue as trolling. Thanks for the kind words about the review too, I really do appreciate feedback :)

Tell ya what, we'll agree to disagree. Sound good? :D

Actually, i'm not. You see, it's a game...not my fucking life!
That's the whole point of my argument here. Unlike you i don't feel the need to prove you wrong with all means possible. I very much accept your opinion. But, and this is the important part, it's just that - an opinion.
Once you have understood the concept for different opinons and how you express yourself without sounding like a frickin knight on a holy crusade you maybe find people willing to discuss matters with you.
Untill then:

Stop feeding the damn thing, man. We'll never get it out the door this way!

OT: Another good review as usual. I tried liking FF8 back in the day - if only because I had the hots for Quistis - but the overly complex battle system stopped me dead in my tracks.

thanks dude, although I was more of a selphie boy myself - bearing in mind that this was before voice acting so I had no idea the kind of person who would actually voice her at the time lol

I think now I'm a quistis man. Or a Rinoa Man. Hell, why not both? If I'm going to fantasise about pixels, might as well go all out lol.

If you insist...while i was well over your suggested age (about 20 i think) you can call it that since it's a long time ago. I just hope that makes you sleep better at night.

Somewhat but I was wondering if you had some those " I really wanted to add this in but it did work out" kind of moments and what they where.
