now that you mention it, I did want to talk about the atmosphere of the whole game, but I didn't want the review to sound too wishy-washy.

I just thought that some of the scenes had so much gravitas that they were actually quite moving, like how squall dreamt about vowing to be strong now that sis was gone when he was a child. With the economical sound effects and no child actor voice ruining it gave the whole scene a very personal touch - I remembered my parents getting divorced at the time and feeling a lot of the same things, and watching it again brought a lot of stuff back.

Like I said it's wishy washy and wouldn't transfer over to a larger audience, but I'm glad you brought it up cos I did want to mention it on some level.

Also the graphics were well above par, and with the format the game uses it really stands up well even today - but it's hardly an important point.

Great Review Dom, sorry I couldn' finish looking over it, I kinda forgot it was Easter. :p

Ahh, someone suspended on your review. Hey, at least they read it, I've had people argue to suspension while still pulling the "too long; didn't read" card.

I think you nailed down the verdict pretty well this time. I don't think those two earlier cases may have been isolated incidents. Great job buddy!

hey thanks man :)
Actually it sucks he got suspended, we just got to talking properly.

I think the problem with the last two verdicts were that I had to do different ones for work, so they just got a bit muddled when I re-wrote them. Let's see how it goes in the future, keep an eye peeled for me dudeski :)

Honestly, the game has some of the best music in any game in existence, which is something not oft mentioned apart from Liberi Fatali.
In particular, there's a segment in the Garden Battle right as Seifer orders a Rocket Motorcycle attack that has an amazing musical transition
.

The Junction system is interesting, however the draw system is very much not. You can cheese this game by farming magic over and over near the beginning of the game then junctioning it to attack and HP and just running straight through the game without thinking.

I always hated Squall, Zell, and Selphie for incessant whining (I mean if they cut half his dialogue, I could buy the brooding hero and confused adolescent bit, but they thrust it straight into your face every scene.), being a hyperactive moron, and being the (Yahtzeeism) Kooky character respectively.

The Laguna scenes were probably my favorite part of the game. Some of the best music in battles and I especially love Julia's Piano bit. He was also goofy enough to be funny but not the over-goofyness that plagues some of the other characters.

The only other big flaw with this game is giving you complete mobility via the Ragnarok, but you only have it for a grand total of 30 seconds of playtime if you're not doing sidequests...

This wasn't my first RPG, but it was my first Final Fantasy, and I still rate it very high on my list of JRPGs (Still below Chrono Trigger/Cross), but I agree with the overall assessment that it's under appreciated by a majority of the fanbase but in no way perfect.

Or you have poor taste for a 19 year old...
It's purely subjective in the end. I could go and say "You're wrong bla bla bla". However, why should I bother? You're not going to change your opinion.

Case in point: I liked it, you didn't. I think it's a good game. If you're going to look at people the wrong way because you disagree, it's your choice.

Although, I should warn you. There's people out there who will not think like me. To them, "You have poor taste" is like saying "Everything you ever loved is crap". They won't take it lightly. I can assure that.

Edited Note* My apologies to domble for de-railling. Your review is still great though.
I like it when people immediately leap into claiming it's all subjective taste, because it means they don't have any actual arguments to defend this shit.

No amount of claiming subjectiveness is going to make, for example, the orphanage plot twist good. None. It's an absurd, contrived, pointless trainwreck. You couldn't possibly defend it, so you're going to wave your hands about how it's subjective in the hope that no one notices that it's indefensible.
And you're going to go on and on about how subjective-ness is not a defense so people either discredit you and ignore you entirely or to hide the fact that you somehow believe that one opinion (and yes it is an opinion an subjective thing), but not just any one opinion your opinion, is the opinion everyone should have. You think the plot is a train-wreck, fine, whatever but others do not.

Anyways back to the OT and away from the troll.

I like the review, and furthermore I think that this was a fairly awesome game, beats the hell out of most of the more recent ones and VII for that matter too [raises flame shield] (sorry my opinion, i'm not going to argue it i just didn't like VII).

My favorite FF game, and my third favorite JRPG all around. First being Legend of Mana, second being SaGa Frontier 1 or 2. Always a tough call, there.

Anyway. LOVED SEEING LOVE FOR THIS GAME.

Seven can rot, personally. 8 and 9 were better. Making 7, a good game, the worst of the PS1 FFs.

I would say more like diamond in the "decompressed coal" sort of fashion. There was a lot of weird stuff going on behind the scenes, and this is the first game in the series to make the "wuv story" the focus and everything else take a back seat. I've got a pretty good reasonable suspension of disbelief... but this game tested me to the limit. Laguna should have been the main story and all the meddling kids should have been at most a sidequest.

I don't know... everything about this game screams "we're trying too hard." Every horrific jRPG protagonist cliche comes from this game as much as people would like to attribute it to Cloud (Advent Children Cloud is different). Nostalgia is a very strong thing though. This I understand. I also know a game does not have to be "good" for you to "like" it... and I think the tongue-in-cheek-ness of your review highlighted that nicely. For that I say, "bravo!" A wonderful read!

A laguna game would be pretty cool actually - reliving his old glory days, bonding with his friends, weeping over the tragic loss of his love that will never be reclaimed... Honestly I don't care as long as it still has the card game.

I think when it comes to the FFvii massive and the FFviii posse, we should all unite under one banner and celebrate the golden age of gaming that brought these two titles to us. Our combined passion, love and might will be a force to be reckoned with. Then, and only then, can we do what is truly important...

Find Final Fantasi X-2 and stamp it's face into the concrete.

Cheers for the wonderful review about my favouritest game evaaar!

I personally loved the atmosphere and music the most. I read somewhere that the inspiration for the game world was of a Sci fi Europe, which I think comes through marvellously in places like Fisherman's Horizon for some reason.

Awesome review and I'd love to see what you think about Final Fantasy XIII.

I miss the good old text-windows, voices ruined the series for me, since ff10 I cant enjoy this series like before, it was like reading a good manga or comicbook.

Domble will you bear my children?

Now I'm not sure if I want to spend that $7 on FFVIII "just to see what it's like" but 4,5,6 definatley played those on an SNES emulator, any game that goes to space (goes to not starts in) or has a silly plot is awesome in my book

I'm gobsmacked. I've liked your other reviews and I find myself clicking on any thread which reads "caffine" in the title now but i have to admit as I opened up this review I was scared I was finnaly going to dissagree with you, in a big way.

But no, the light still shines and worlds keeps spinning because you actually like the rejected FF8 as much as I. It was the first game I played where I truely completed it and cared about the characters :)

Though, I do believe this is where we will have our first unfortunate dissagreement. before 8, I played 7. I didn't like it. I didn't even bother to finish it.

I found your review quite enjoyable to read and it brought back memories of my first playthrough of the game. Another poster noted that FF8 reviews seem to be popular at the moment. I wonder if that has anything to do with HCBailly's Let's Play on Youtube.

Just to warn anyone who cares, spoilers ahoy!

Anyhow, here's what I'll add to the mix. I don't think this has been brought up yet (if it has, forgive me) but what does everyone think on the subject of character development? As much as I love this game, I can't help but think it was... poor at best. Beyond the orphanage revelation scene (which in fairness, I do agree is a bit naff, along the lines of they-woke-up-and-it-was-all-a-dream sort of storytelling, but that's neither here nor there) I feel the game gave up on half the cast. Every character but Squall and Rinoa were consigned to their stereotypes, Zell, Selphie, Irvine, Quistis, etc, etc. Now I personally loved Quistis' character, but she could've easily been killed off then, and I personally think it would make no difference.

To contrast, I'll demonstrate what I consider good character development from my favourite game in the series, FFX. Most of the characters continue to develop as the story does in little ways, with occasional spotlight on one person. Take Lulu in the Calm Lands, take Kimahri on Mt. Gagazet, hell even take Auron with the Jecht spheres. They might not seem like much, but even the little clues leading towards these bits (like the constant 'hornless' goades) keep the characters interesting and dynamic, and the story only benefits. Of course, if you haven't played the game, this is just meaningless gibberish, but my point is that characters like Selphie and Zell would've been better if they'd had more individual storyline development.

I have a particular take on the junctioning system too. In one of Yahtzee's Extra Punctuation articles (or was it that Alone in the Dark one?), he mentioned that the games that fail hardest are closer to greatness than mediocre ones. I equate the junctioning system to this. In my opinion, the developers should be commended for trying something new that tried moving away from the MP style of magic, which can get very, very bland after seven different games. Hell, it didn't work, but nice try anyway.

It would probably be more bareable if not for those goddamned obligatory tutorials.

I'm well aware that's a lot of text to take in, so to summarise, and completely undermine my credibility, let me say this: I have a feeling the girl in the picture cosplaying Selphie will haunt my dreams(to put it nicely).

I still consider FFVIII the weakest game in the series. I didn't like the character and the story was mediocre, but the biggest offense is the battle system, which I hate with a passion and a fury.

Though I'd have to bow out in favor of Final Fantasy VI. For lack of a better ability to properly express how I feel about Final Fantasy VIII, I'll let its two main characters visually portray my feelings.

While i agree that the plot twists at the end of the game get weird and spin out of control, it wasn't enough to make me dislike the whole game. I liked the card game, the sidequests, the first half of the story and even the junction system. I didn't overuse draw and was still able to get through the game while having a challenge on some of the missions.

Not even Xell and Selphie did really annoy me....i guess i am weird ;)
