Situation:
My brother and I finally have high-end gaming PCs, and are determined to make good use of them. We'd like to game together.

Conditions:

No LAN. He's in CA, I'm in NC.
CO-OP mode, for two players, or more with bots.
Not an MMOG, he hates them.
If it's a long-term game, it needs to have savegames (not checkpoints).

Games We Loved (but want something new):

Rainbow 6
System Shock 2
Baldur's Gate
Icewind Dale
Age Of Empires (1 and 2)
Empire Earth

See, I don't feel like I'm asking for too terribly much, but these days good CO-OP games seem impossible to find. Any ideas would be extremely helpful!

My first thought was Titan Quest, but it might be too much of a click-fest for you. How about Rise of Legends? Not true co-op, but you can team up against the computer.

I actually didn't like [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.33703] Titan Quest so much even as a single player game. he and I tried Dungeon Siege once as well, and the checkpoint/world respawn situation really irritated us (Having come from Icewind Dale). Titan Quest makes me feel it will handle CO-OP play the same.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter? I believe you can play through the whole single player game co-op, but I don't know if they let you keep some bots in there or if you're required to have 4 players, a la Swat 4. Swat 4 is awesome too.

BF2 has a co-op mode vs. bots in the latest patch, but the bots aren't that great. Might be fun with the right approach, though.

Serious Sam 2 has great co-op, but it's about as mindless as you get.

So long as FPS's are in the mix, Unreal Tourney and its successors are quite a bit of fun with some friends. Quake 1 and 2 are stand-bys that I go back to for cooperative gaming. (I'll grant you there isnt much of a story but it's still fun.) Diablo / Diablo 2 is another I'd recommend easily. Speaking of blizzard Games there is always warcraft / starcraft via bnet that makes for good 2vs2 or 2vscomputer setups. Heroes of Might and Magic something ought to have a play online mode if waiting isnt a huge deal to you.

in summary -

UT / UT 2003 / UT 2004
Quake 1 / Quake 2
Diablo / Diablo 2
Warcraft II BNE / Starcraft
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and on.

Oh yeah, how could I forget UT2k4. Co-op against bots can actually be pretty cool with some of the more elaborate game types, like Assault and Onslaught. It's getting a little long in the tooth graphically, but it's a great game and you can get it for like $10 now.

I wonder how Sven Co-op is coming along for Half Life 2? Which reminds me, I think there's also a co-op mod for Doom 3 if you're into that sort of thing.

What's actually quite co-op-like is to play BF2 online rather than with bots. Because each team is subdivided into small squads, you can just make a squad for just yourselves and have co-op-like adventures. Your squad leader acts as a mobile respawn point for the rest of the squad, so basically you can always stick together and collaborate as opposed to doing your own thing. Plus you're more productive playing that way.

Operation Flashpoint is awesome when it works and when the map is designed for co-op. Lots and lots of fun, collaborating and trying out all sorts of different approaches to beat a co-op mission.

I actually mentioned this in a seperate thread, but SWAT 4 has some great co-op. Unfortunately you can't fill the remaining team slots with bots (standard team is 4 players), but it should be playable with two people. If you liked rainbow 6 you would probably like this game.

Wow. I love Sven co-op. There is going to be a Half Life 2 version? You totally just made my day.

Oh, and I've used the LAN-mode thing a lot in the past. It works really well.

If you don't mind that its an Older Game you can play System Shock 2 Co-op

You just need to use Hamachi to set up a Virtual LAN and it will work fine.
