I'm not very familiar with modern shooters, but didn't CoD already offer some kind of persistent wolrd in all the levels, feats and whatnot? So since that's pretty much free witht he game, all you get as bonus is stats tracking and "exclusive" videos?

I have many issues with how Blizzard went with BattleNet 2.0 but at least they only hinted at possibility of additional maps being bought, not the whole ladder part of the multiplayer gaming being a paid service.

I could understand the whole Elite thing with CoD if it was separate game, that you could download for free and play basic, cut down version with like 2-3 maps and 1-2 game-modes without paying a dime, with all the mentioned features + loads of game-modes/maps as "premium" content, but if they ask me to actually buy full version of a game for 60$, and then pay for things that do not really enhance the gameplay all that much it just makes it look bad.

No I wouldn't pay for it, mainly because its based on subscription. If it automatically included my own dedicated server with the service, I MIGHT consider it. But at this point the fact that they are doing it will cause me to look at competing games when its released.
Do you know how expensive a decent sized dedicated server is per month?

OT: They haven't really added anything new or innovative with this at all as far as I can see. Just a glorified social network. If they want to add dedicated servers or something similar they should run a couple of their own at launch and let other people start/rent their own.

The only thing this is really benefiting social side wise is console gamers for easier management of clans as we already have xfire and steam on PC why would we need this too?

No it doesn't. All FPS games are instanced and on separate servers or hosts. As far as I know there is no persistent FPS game in existence. Maybe a MMOFPS but no FPS.

Ya about $6/month from an honest business... thats why it was a BIG might. But I'll still be sticking with my origional plan. I have about 30 games right now where I can jump into nearly any situation and shoot at someone or have them shooting at me. There's nothing this game has to offer me really.

You'd better hope people don't pay for this... it's a slippery slope and it brings activision one step closer of having call of duty subscription fees.
Hardcore CoD fans aren't that stupid... are they? <_<
They are if they are willing to up and pay for something that other companies like Bungie and Valve have been giving away for free....

As far as I can tell, it's a social network you can pay for. I think it's fucking bullshit, but they refer to "playing with who you want to play" as "clan support", something that seven years ago, Halo 2 provided for free. If the "real actual prizes" they refer to in the trailer is "Free Maps" why not? As it stands, I'll buy the game, (on a discount on launch from my local online retailer), and not subscribe to this shit.

yeah, I'm totally gonna pay for this >.<
I'd like to officially welcome you to 2007 activision. here's a hot tip for you: invest in real estate. that's not going south anytime soon.

Bungie already did it, BO did it and they all did it for free. what makes you think people are going to pay for it? (TF2 hats hmm? yeah, I see your point.)
I doubt it'll make up for the customers they'll lose because they're showing no respect for their customers. and because they're milking the franchise to death and everyone with half a brain is sick of it by now.

Aren't some features free as well? I remember some of the Activision community people were saying that parts of it will be free while others would cost.

The only reason I would pay for it is because is it comes with map packs (depending on the price).

I meant the whole idea of levels, prestige and perks that are present in CoD. Persistent world doesn't mean seamless open world, but some degree of continuity of player character between the games.

Yeah, I definitely won't be paying shit for this. Not going to even consider buying this shitbox game. Activision are the kings of being the "douchebage corporation". They don't deserve a penny from any of the suckers that plan on buying this game.

I won't be paying a monthly fee to see my k/d ratio that I stopped caring about a long time ago. If it's anything like Black Ops' stat system then I won't care.

Dedicated servers would be the one thing I'd be willing to shell out the cash for, provided my friends did as well, since it'd be pointless if we weren't playing together.

Strategy guides and such seem silly.

Overall I'd say this is the good way to do things. That will still sell like crazy, as I know quite a few people who like to whore the hell out of their stats, and then there are the other people who buy it for the sake of having it because it's Call of Duty.

When I first heard rumors about this long ago via Bobby Kotick I thought it had the potential to be a good idea but really would just suck, making me not want to buy the game at all. I'd feel, cheated.

Looking at whats on offer right now, i'd firmly say no. Though in their defense it has the potential to be great with the right extras included (i wouldn't know what, only that right now it certainly doesn't) and is almost guarenteed to make them money. The next COD game will sell big no matter what and alot of people will simply buy it because it's part of COD, can't blame them for doing it considering it's completely our choice to waste money on them or not.

heres the link from the escapist about a year ago: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101503-Kotick-Wants-Call-of-Duty-Subscriptions-Tomorrow

Here's the thing. Most people I know will buy Modern Warfare 3. Most people I know won't play the single player (despite the fact that, right now, it's the only thing I really want to play in it apart from Spec Ops).

Nobody I know will pay a subscription.

No gamer what so ever is going to buy into this subscription, because as it stands, the features it's offering are... negligible. They're offering the equivalent of nothing, unless you have a party of 8 other gamers that you play Call of Duty constantly with, and can't be without your clan. But if you're like me, you probably couldn't care less, and the stats tracking which seems like a somewhat good addition to the game for more serious gamers won't matter at all to any average gamers! Will you really play a match or two, go into the next lobby, pull up a map and say "Hmm, these were the main areas I died in last time... OK, I should definitely throw a flashbang around those corners and I should score a free kill or two! And I should change my perk so that I can see claymores around the corners too!"

Just the whole marketing behind it is wrong. There just isn't a lot you can take away from the game while leaving a bit left for those not paying up! Anything else and you'll ruin your public image forever (if it isn't already a shambles).

So they're going to start charging for a stats screen? Seriously? Dear lord I am so done with this franchise. Shame, I had so much fun with COD4...

This worries me quite a bit. It starts here, but then they make it mandatory and before you know it, you can't ANY multiplayer without a subscription fee.

REPENT! TEH END IS NIGH!!!

Ive said it before, Ill say it again. No shooter possesses the depth of content required to justify a monthly subscription fee.

Ok I take that back, there is a monthly sub fee that could be justified. It would be less than 1$ BUT.. No publisher is going to accept anything that low. Until shooter devs/pubs give equivalent level of content as a standard MMO, then they need to get over this notion of trying to charge for the service. It is absolutely nothing but trying to latch on to anyone dense enough not to see how patently obvious of a cash grab this is.

That may or may not be what they are intending with this beta. Seems fairly likely that its working toward the creation of a paid subscription model.

I say this now as a forewarning. If anyone anywhere willingly gives up their money for this sort of "service" you are screwing the industry, you are screwing your friends, you are screwing yourself, because this will hurt the industry, by creating a "model" for other publishers to build off of and try to milk you out of money. Hell it hurts the economy by individuals getting duped into giving away money for essentially nothing in return.

This is the kind of comment I wanted to avoid on this thread. Whatever you feel about COD, there are some of us who still find it fun.

'Suckers' implies people will be buying something they won't get value from, but most COD players get anything from 3 to 10 days worth of hours from each game.

10 dollar map packs, and paying extra to track your stats, however, can fuck right off.
