Really surprised this took up a whole page in today's The Times newspaper but apparently Activision is going to separate from the pack and have a recommended-retail-price of £55 for the regular release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, instead of the usual £40-45.

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/gadgets_and_gaming/article6728189.ece

That's at least a 25% price increase, though the article goes tries to justify this as the game has unusually high replay value to justifies the price, but it is interesting that Activision is alone in this price hike for this specific game.

What concerns me is although the Pound has devalued compared to the Euro, it is still £1.67 to $1.

Since Activision is an American company, that means they are effectively charging $92 in the UK yet only $60 state side. But that's retail, no idea what % cut the producers actually get after all the middle men but it should be the same for both sides of the Atlantic.

What is Activision's game? Do you think it's for real? Will they follow through with it? Will sales collapse in the UK? Would you buy a game for almost $100? Even Modern Warfare 2?

Well, you're the star of the show. Duh! But in all seriousness that is kinda ridiculous, even for Activision.

I'll wait a few months for the price to drop.

Or pick it up in Sainsbury's, everything's cheaper there.

Cpt good luck with that, it's two years later and COD4 is still 50 bucks.... or what would your equivalent be.... hmm 30 pounds?? Is that right?

England always gets fucked over on prices, for instance, the MW2 prestige edition is $150, which would equate to what.. £80-85? Yet we get charged £120 for it...
Another example, last year an american friend of mine paid $150 for rockband, with all of the instruments, yet back here it was £150! Just ridiculous.

I'll be acquiring my 'copy' for much cheaper me thinks...

Actually it's about a £10 rise. When I bought COD 4 it was £45, so it's not that much of an increase.

Damn, this story broke on the 16th?

Geez The Times is slow, took them almost 2 weeks to break it. At least it gets wider recognition, most readers of the Times don't care about games, it seems this price hike is being used as an example of how Britain is lagging behind in this recession and how consumers will directly suffer.

But my country is so fu**ed, I mean it is almost a 1:1 ratio of Euro to Pound.

Congratulations Gordon Brown, you unelected incompetent failure.

Well if they just increase the price for no real reason I'm not gonna buy it until they lower it.

If a lot of people buys into this crap then the price will stay like that. It's amazing how COD4 on Steam in Europe is STILL £50, 2 YEARS after the release. Talk about trying to rip off people. Luckily it's much cheaper on retail.

Its still so high because people keep buying the bloody thing, thats the reason for the price hike, they expect many people to buy this game regardless..

You aren't looking hard enough, five minutes on Amazon and I had it for £12 new PC DVD.

No doubt less on fleabay.

Oblivious has the right idea here, wait a while for the price to drop, the game's not going anywhere.
I really hope the software pirates come out in force for this one, I can't think of a more karmic punishment for greed than to be stolen from en masse.

15% employee discount is always good too.
Picked up GoW2 and CoD:WaW for about £27 each.

Always used to go Morrisons for my games when I was younger, they were always £5-£6 cheaper than anywhere else.

But the price of MW2 is just ridiculous.

Well looks like instead of a British majority (like CoD4 seems to be) it will be American if they go through with this.

Now I don't want to encourage piracy but...I whole-heartedly encourage pirating this game.

In Belgium we have to pay even more for all games.
?69.99 ==> $99.87 (of which less than $10 are taxes)
Pity us!
