Before I get into it, I'm just going to say that I have nothing against DLCs. Actually, I think that the idea behind them is wonderful. Major bug slipped past playtesting? Now it can be fixed with minimum fuss! Reviews say the main issue with your game is not enough of 'x'? Now you can add 'x'!

I'm not even saying that DLCs should be free. Developers work hard on their games, but they do have fairly strict deadlines. Maybe they couldn't find the time to shove something into the gold build of the game? Well, then they can use the DLC system to get it out there.

No, my issue isn't with Downlodable Content. It's with Unlockable Content, or as I shall refer to them from now on, ULC's. If you look in the Playstation Network (Assuming. Don't have a PS3) or Xbox Live Marketplace and you see a DLC that is about 300kb in size, that would be a 'key' to unlock content that is already on the disk that you paid full price for.

Many people just say 'Well if you don't like it, then don't buy it.' That doesn't stop it from being major douchebaggery, and some people will still fork over the $5 or however much it costs to get at the ULC. If noone buys the ULC, maybe some gaming companies *CoughEAcough* will get the hint and actually start letting you have everything on the disk that you've already paid them for.

In otherwords, Believe in your force and head into the Garden of Madness. [sub]Shameless No More Heroes reference. Don't hurt me.[/sub]

Or charge me 39.99 for the game instead of 59.99 and give me the option to unlock more cars/outfits?

Also a good idea. I want to use Super Street Fighter IV as an example of something like that, but I know thats wrong. Its like...an..expansion...but...more...thing. Ugh. ITS A THING.

I hate 90% of all DLC, the other 10% I don't care about. I have never bought a DLC and don't think that I ever will, but if people want to pay for DLC that for all intend and purpose should be in the game let them. I just look at the vanilla game and if to must have been rip out I don't buy it.

Meh, if people like a product they most likely want more and will buy the DLC. If they don't like it, they won't.

Good luck with the boycotting, posting something like this on here won't change a thing. It hasn't changed my opinion in the least. And what exactly do you hope to accomplish? If developers, by some odd chance actually decides to read your post and take up your suggestion, they would most likely just take it off the disk and make a bigger file to download. The developers and publishers release what they want you to play and restrict what they don't want you to play. That's the way it is and it won't likely change.

Also, what "ULC" are actually referring to? I haven't seen anything like what you describe.

I don't buy DLC in the first place. Remember when DLC was first introduced as a way to fall back in love with a game months after playing (Shivering Isles)? Microtransactions and DLC already on the disc can burn in hell.
Note: No offense to those that like it.

We had this thread last week. We aren't your boycott army, stop asking us to boycott people. Jesus, it's like looking at /b/ only with boycotts and not raids.

Look, they can charge whatever they like for whatever they want. They worked hard on it, thought it was better to put that on the disc and offer a 300kb download and you have the nerve to complain about it?

Stop whining about not getting everything for free.

BioShock 2's Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack DLC is one example.

Dead Space 2 has a couple, but I can't think of any specific names at the moment.

Games should be free and DLC should just BE the actual game or something retarded.

Are you complaining about project $5.00 or what ever it was called?
Where you buy a game and it comes with a download key for DLC.

DLC should never be conspicuous in its absence from the main game.

For example, Dragon Age pulled a real dick move by putting characters in-game who tried to sell you DLCs.

I totally support putting forth better, more customer-friendly ideas to replace DLCs or ULCs.

It doesn't really seem to help and most people just get PO'd about them, and the companies are just looking for a way to get as much money out of it as they can, hopefully compromise will save the day.

I think that some of the DLC you have to download in full could've been included in the disc if they wanted to, and I honestly prefer it when they're honest and save me bandwidth. Its impossible to know which DLCs are extra work they put in after the game and which are cash ins.

Meh, I try to stay neutral on this. On one hand I fell developers have the right to make DLC and decide when it should be released. On the other I do hate how its becoming less expansion and add-ons to purchase key to unlock stuff already on the disk. (Looking at you Capcom!)

A new game in the US is $60, and 110 AUD in Australia. (As I recall). That's a far cry from free

I actually really enjoy DLC, but I'm not the kind of twit who buys a SSF4 costume pack or a CoD weapon pack and then bitches about it because it doesn't add much in the game. Of course it doesn't, it's just cosmetic. The only DLC that's worth it is something that actually expands the game and possibly the story.

Though I hate that Ubisoft did that douchey 'we're gonna skip two chapters. Don't worry, just get the DLC to play them.' thing in Assassin's Creed. I think Gearbox and Bioware did good jobs making DLC that was actually worth the price, excluding 'Mad Moxxi' and the weapons packs for ME2. I'd like to see more DLC like that. DLC isn't inherently bad, it's just the bigger companies are being greedy douches about it now except for Valve, I love you Valve.

Have you guys read the OP?

OT: No, I'm not going on a boycott. ULC is annoying, sure, but not worth all the time and effort to get rid of it.

I hate DLC. But i'm not going to get on my soapbox here.

The reason for 'ULC' is ensuring that the developer still gets some revenue after the first week or so of release. If you buy a game used, what does the developer get? Nothing, at all. The whole point of project ten dollar was to try and send some of that money back to the developers who get diddly from the major game retailers who don't have to pay them squat when they make a second hand sale. The point makes sense, but the way in which it's being handled right now is rather heavy handed. I would venture a guess as to say someone went "Quick! I have an idea how we can temporarily make some revenue from the used game market, but we have to move fast and implement it right now!" and thus we have this newborn concept of the ULC. I like to think that as the industry evolves, there will be better and less intrusive ways of handling project ten dollar and similar concepts. Just give it time.
