Ok now I would like to ask if there were any games you would recommend for a newbie PC gamer that you would like to suggest.

Also can anyone tell me if there is any way to get Direct X OTHER than off the Microsoft website, because every time I try to download it, it won't access the Microsoft download website :(

Hit the nail on the head there!
Also if your into more mindless FPS I'll suggest Painkiller to you, some great laughs to be had with that!

They are fairly old but I can't recomend the Age of Wonder series enough. They aren't very common in stores but it wouldn't be hard to download a torrent of them, not that I endorse or support piracy its just an option ;)

Maybe Left 4 Dead. Its a fun fps, with lots of fun to be had in the multiplayer and co-op parts of the game.

And valve is awesome.

Just in case you haven't already played it, StarCraft. I know you said that you liked FPSs and RPGs but that game is pretty killer.

EDIT: I also realize that it's a bit old, but w/ SC2 coming eventually you might wanna consider playing the first installment (and Brood War, the expansion) if you're ever going to pick up the sequel.

If you enjoy FPSs, the PC can't be beat. However, to recommend cutting-edge PC FPSs you need a good PC gaming rig.

If you get a good rig, you can look into titles like Crysis for a "sandbox" FPS experience, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 for your tactical FPS fix and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. which combines RPG elements into a FPS. Fallout 3 is definitely another option. These are demanding games.

Most Source-based games, such as Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead (for your multiplayer fix), Counter-Strike Source, Portal and the Half-Life 2 series, can run on much more modest hardware - and are highly recommended as well.

Finally for RPGs, dont' overlook The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.

Any of these games *should* have the latest DirectX 10 for you to install on the CD or download file.

As far as DirectX goes, just about any game you buy will have the minimum version you need to play the game. Of course, if you download it elsewhere you should be fine as well.

Games to get into PC gaming? Well, Valve games are an obvious starting point. Other FPS games that are more popular with the PC set are those by Monolith. Check out FEAR, or No One Lives Forever (NOLF). NOLF 1&2 are some of my favorite games ever, and the second one in particular still holds up pretty well both gameplay and graphics-wise. Hell, one of the boss fights takes place in trailer stuck in a tornado ripped out of the ground from Akron, Ohio! What? Yeah, that happens! Plus, there's ninjas. Female ninjas.

RPGs? If you haven't played the Knights of the Old Republic games, they are great RPGs that are also far more accessible than the Baldur's Gate games. Really, BioWare games are great in general.

After you've hit the basics I'm sure we can direct you to some great games that require a bit more "PC experience."

So, you want to be a PC gamer like me, eh? Well, my best advice is...

...(notices all these recommendations for ancient PC games)...

Flee! Flee while you still can!

(Seriously, maybe subscribe to GameTap [http://www.gametap.com] (probably all the gaming you can handle) or try out a MMORPG (Warhammer Online [http://www.warhammeronline.com/] is currently in vogue) or something. If you were interested in more recent cutting edge whiz-bang awesome games that require a really good computer to run, Direct2Drive [http://www.direct2drive.com] and Steam [http://www.steampowered.com] would probably serve you better than BestBuy.)

Get Steam, and browse through the Valve section. You're all set for FPS's now. And as Spaceman said The Knights of the Old Republic's are really awesome. And you certainly can't go wrong with Diablo 1 and 2.

If you're new to PC games, I'd recommend you try out some games from genres that don't really work on consoles, so I'd start by recommending you give a try to some RTS games. Warcraft 3, Red Alert 3 and Company of Heroes are the ones I recommend most highly.

You could also give World of Warcraft a try, it's not really my thing, but tons of people love it and if you like RPGs, you might too.

Any good FPSes will be great to play on PC, once you get used to keyboard and mouse it's ace, the best recent PC exclusive ones are Crysis and Crysis:Warhead, and for older ones, try out Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl or Painkiller is a real laugh.

Planescape: Torment is an old RPG classic no RPG lover should go without playing, if you check it out, come and ask here for some advice on getting it to run properly on a modern PC.

Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is another oldish awesome PC exclusive RPG, don't forget to grab the official and unofficial patches if you play it.

If you haven't played Oblivion yet, or played it and really loved it, check that out with mods. If you haven't played Fallout 3 yet, I'm sure that will end up with some great mods for PC users.

It would all depend on the specifications of your computer. There's no point buying a new shiny game if your hardware will only run it at slideshow pace.

If it's a new pc, get Oblivion, WoW and Counter-strike. Will all keep you occupied.

You don't need to download DirectX, any game that needs it will also have it on the disc somewhere. Also if you are running Vista then DirectX10 is built in.

Anyway, go play Half Life 2.

FPS and RPG eh?

Deus Ex - quite possibly the best game ever. FPS with RPG elements.

Planescape Torment - Classic RPG

Fallout 1 and 2 - More Classics

Knights of the Old Republic

The Witcher

Pretty much any game that is made by Valve Software

Don't play WoW. And you don't really need a new pc to play counterstrike either.

If you can deal with late 90's graphics go for baldur's gate I and II. Every RPG lover out there that's over their 20s will say that it was the closest to RPG perfection.

You can also go for gothic I and II. Don't bother with 3. The Elder Scrolls 3 : Morrowind was also nice. Knights of the Old republic I and II are also worth playing.

Neverwinter Nights I is also another option, II isn't that bad, but I wouldn't recommend buying it unless there's really no other option or you are like me a PnP freak who like to RP on persistent worlds.

As for FPSs go for, FEAR and Penumbra. Deus Ex I is really worth playing as well. Also, you could try Thief I, II, III if you're into stealthy stuff while stealing things.
