Just in case you haven't already played it, StarCraft. I know you said that you liked FPSs and RPGs but that game is pretty killer.

EDIT: I also realize that it's a bit old, but w/ SC2 coming eventually you might wanna consider playing the first installment (and Brood War, the expansion) if you're ever going to pick up the sequel.
Starcraft may be old, but it sure beats a hell of a lot of game out there today. Pick up starcraft or age of empires, and then starcraft two when blizzard decides to release it.

Get Steam, and browse through the Valve section. You're all set for FPS's now. And as Spaceman said The Knights of the Old Republic's are really awesome. And you certainly can't go wrong with Diablo 1 and 2.
Yeah, and Half Life. That's what got me into PC gaming. I've got it on the Xbox but I'm getting into it on the PC (and being totally hypercritical at the same time). You could always try something easy like Spore (If you wanna sell your soul early. It'd be worth more than EA shares at the moment.) Just stick to Steam and you'll be set.

Ok now I would like to ask if there were any games you would recommend for a newbie PC gamer that you would like to suggest.

Also can anyone tell me if there is any way to get Direct X OTHER than off the Microsoft website, because every time I try to download it, it won't access the Microsoft download website :(
There is a really old game called Battlezone 2 that combines first person shooters with real time strategy. It's good or you can start off with some starcraft, warcraft 2&/or 3, do some modern FPS. Mainly think of a genre you want to play then imagine a fun idea for it then google it. You'll probably find a PC game for it or at the least a mod.
