Metal is known for it's edgy abrasive nature. It talks about the issues as do most rock groups at some point. But, metal is a whole other animal. It yells at the issues, and most bands have a fromtMAN to accomplish the yelling. Women have nice, smooth, angelic voices (unless you are Rosie O'Donnell). I'm not discriminating females for their voices because I like them, they calm me down and etc.. But can they get the job done as a Metal front women or do they demote their band to Hard Rock or almost metal but not quite Hard Rock either.

One of my friends says no but I say yes. Echoes of Eternity are pretty damn metal, for example, and In This Moment is too.

Yes, see Nightwish. They are definitely metal in my books.

Nightwish, Epica, Krypteria, Within Temptation. That's four bands right there that are metal and with female lead singers.

I'll find some examples...

Nightwis and Within Temptation are debatable as just hard rock. They use the soft voice. Epica and Krypteria aren't very familiar to me.

I have to disagree; they aren't just hard rock. They're symphonic metal. They make full use of solos and distortion in some cases along with the backing of an orchestra. Metal doesn't have to talk about the "issues" or be about masculinity, themes can vary through all different kinds of criteria. Look at Rhapsody of Fire; most of their music focuses on a high fantasy tale that develops over each album.

You can also add After Forever to that list.

I said Metal is known for talking about the issues...not only talking about them. I mean that's why people always get so mad at it and decide to take it to court (80's thing with all those hair bands and such). d: you may now start walking to Mordor muttering curse words under your teeth and kicking small pebbles along the way.

A soft voice does not mean they're not metal; not at all. It means there's a contrast. With such a soft, soprano singer, and instruments like strings and piano, contrasting with heavy power cords and drums, you get a beautiful sound that is very easily metal. It's simply metal mixed with a symphony. Nightwish and Within Temptation are very much so Symphonic Metal; some of the best examples you can find.

There are tons; and not just Symphonic metal either. Female fronted Death Metal bands aren't unusual at all. Like the Agonist, Arch enemy (Of course) and Melo-death/power like Luna Mortis.

Yes. Given the sheer variety of metal, you can have just about any vocalist and it can still be metal. Hell, just look at the tripe they crap out in the name of nu metal.

...Duh.

Alright, to avoid getting cited yet again for being a bad forum member, here's my reasoning.

I have heard a couple female metal bands and they are pretty good so I value both female and male leads.
