Speech and lockpicking is good for a first run.

Steal what you can, but dont get spottet!.. You can pick op objects without it being deemed stealing.. Just take it to a place in the room where you can remain hidden.. Then steal it!

I emptied The Silver Rush that way.

Don't annoy ANYONE. Don't shoot people who doesn't shoot you, don't talk evil to people, just avoid hostilities as much as you can. Trust me, the game gets a lot harder when NCR rangers are bounding over the hill every day D:
Well, on your first playthrough. Part of the Fallout experience is the ability to play as the evilest ************ that ever lived, after all. If the game does it right, it's not stupid evil. For instance, in Fallout 2, you could knock up a hillibilly's daughter, which would lead to a shotgun wedding, and the hillibilly's daughter being added to your party, taking up a slot that could be used for someone much better. You can then get rid of her (freeing up your party) by killing her/selling her into slavery. For extra bonus points, you can go back to the hillibilly father and tell him what you did, which will cause him to have a fatal heart attack.

tl;dr Don't piss off people who don't attack you on your first playthrough, but if you feel confident in yourself on subsequent playthroughs, GO NUTS.

Small Guns is integral because most of the guns are in this category. Repair is also good because if you repair guns you loot, the fully repaired guns can sell for a lot. I personally like lockpick and stealth so I can go around stealing everything.

When the time comes buy the Anti Material Rifle! >.<

Also if you want a free Tesla Cannon go to the Vertibird Crash site yes there are quite a few robots there but if you've got an emp weapon they're easy as hell. =D

Play it on Hardcore. :D Enjoy!
This! A thousand times this.
It makes the game so much more enjoyable, at least the first half of it. When you get to the "overpowered" stage, it doesn't really matter much anymore.
I doubt I would have had as much fun with NV if I removed Hardcore.

Play as a standard soldier on your first playthrough, they're easier than cowboys. Don't piss off the NCR. Don't piss off the Powder Gangers, not at first, anyway. Talk to Eddie. You'll know what to do for your country, when the time comes. Stay the fuck away from Sloan and Quarry Junction. When and if you find an Assault Carbine, KEEP IT. Shotguns generally suck. Never buy a scope for a Goddamn pistol. The Nexus, mods, and modding are your best friends, given you bought for PC. If you did buy for PC, and either get a mod-added shotgun, or a shotgun de-shitting mod, a shotgun loaded with slugs does the most collateral damage, sort of a fucking anti-tank rifle, enough to literally fucking destroy Deathclaws, if you have Shotgun Surgeon. Don't piss off Caesar until you can beat Geckos to death with your bare hands, without being hit. Oh, and you have some serious firepower. That first part is just fun, and hilarious. Never try going out the back way of Goodsprings. Never try going East from the Graveyard. That's all I can think about. Oh, and explosives are your friendly enemy. Take them, use them, love them, try not to get blown up by them.

I've got my speech almost maxed out, and I've got lockpick pretty high as well. They're both paying dividends, whatever I can't talk someone into giving to me for free I can just steal while they have their backs turned.

Early on, get your hand on a Cowboy Repeater and repair it back to full [Takes a shitton of caps]. Stock up on .357 bullets, and bam. You have yourself a low level hand cannon. I've gotten more insta kills with that beauty than with my rocket launcher.

Stay away from Black Mountain and the entire left side of the map for the first few levels, you will get absolutely decimated by super mutants and giant insects respectively.

In just about every establishment you go into [House, Hotel Room, etc etc] there will be a first aid kit in the bathroom with a few stimpacks and several other random items. Most medical supplies don't take up weight on Normal mode, so raid every one that you can to make sure you're always covered.

Hope these help.

I have only played Fallout 3, but what i did when i started the game was to raise my luck to 10 and leave everything else in five. Every battle i got a lot of critical hit and it made all the battles very easy.

Do not level explosives! At low levels, chucking grenades or dynamite at people is an excellent strategy.

At max explosives skill shooting someone with a rocket in the face does less damage than shooting them using a pistol with only average gun skill.

Take medicine or survival not both. if you're on hardcore it may as well be survival as you'll need to keep some food on you anyway.

Save like you're obsessive compulsive and do it in multiple slots.

The other weapons skills are all viable (guns, lasers, melee, fists). I had a lot of fun with unarmed on lower difficulty but I think lasers are slightly more powerful for harder difficulty, plus they look funky.

I personally prefer making a high intelligence character for the extra skill points and just getting the other stats to 6 once I have money to buy the upgrades, but that's just preference, make your character however you like.

I know, but this is a discussion of starting tips.
It is quite fun hiring the Follower doctor, selling him as a slave, helping convicts kill old people and helping gangsters blow up most of New Vegas with a bomb o' massive destruction o' death.

But you are wise to ignore being evil on the first playthrough unless you know you are good at Fallout.
P.S. Find HELIOS One near Novac (The place with the dinosaur), power up ARCHIMEDES II, go to Freeside North, steal or buy the Euclid's C-Finder from the kid there, and you have the most powerful laser in the game.

Hey Escapist's

So I just bought FNV today, I wasnt too good at the previous Fallout tbh, But I had to get this considering the immense deal they had a Gamestation (Collector's Edition for £25 brand new).

I was hoping for some tips, things to upgrade in aka small arms etc, stats upgrading or whatever.

If im talking shite its because I probably am, I aint got a clue how the leveling structure system works or anything...

Help much appreciated! :D
OK when you start you have three options on how your going to get to New Vegas, all of them suck :(

Left= Get stung in the heart like steve Erwin by giant dragon flies.
Straight ahead= Get mauled to death by death claws.
Right= takes a very long time and in general suck

Option #4 Go straight ahead until you see the Warning signs for those deathclaws, use your only stealth boy and depending on where you start you can reach New Vegas hours ahead of most.

Oh and PRAY that it doesn't wear off early and SAVE OFTEN!
Actually, there's a weapon hidden inside a ranch shack along the path on the right which contains a pretty epic melee weapon. Even if you won't use it, it's worth ~600 caps.

Create a character with high intelligence. Intelligence is what determines how many skill points you get when you level up, and skill points are what affects how bad ass your character is.

I'd say that you should specialize in four skills at most, one or two combat, and one or two not combat. Science is especially useful.
And if you go left, you can find a real kick-ass melee weapon. If you hug the Wstern side of the map going North, you'll find a grave just before the campground with all the stinging death. Bring a shovel and you get a unique knife that's really good.
Speech skill comes up a lot more. Put points in that.
Don't piss off the Powder Gangers until you get a chance to do a mission for them at the correctional facility.
Take Educated Perk first chanced you get, then comprehension. Even with that and all the skill books you wont max out all skills but with the sill magazines you wont need to. Just use them when you need 100. Of course you may still want to max out frequently used skills like repair, guns, or melee but there are outfits to augment them too.
Save a lot.
Play Fallout 3 first.

I remember back when I got Fallout three I did a lot oof research and stuff. The game was really simple after a while. Then however, when I got New Vegas, I decided I knew the Fallout ways, so I could play independently. Well, after bombing my first game, I started my second file.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L....In the beginning of the game, you want a quick jump ahead of the NPC's and creatures. Which means you will definetly need more skill points. To do so, get your Intelligence level respectively high. This affects the amount of points you can distribute as you level up, as well some helpful skills. Also in my opinion, endurance can be Effective starting out due to the fact that you may find yourself using melee weapons due to the fact that you may have low ammunition and broken/innefective guns. Later on however, things like strength are great to carry lots of equipment and loot. I say that the more prepared you are, the easier the game is. Also, don't forget that the New Vegas
Medical Clinic has implants for every special skill, as well as a health regeneration and increase damage threshold implants. You will need one point of endurance for each though, so do the math. Also, they are expensive.

SKILLS...SPEECH!!! In my opinion that is the single most useul skill in the game. Throughout the entire game, speech can bail you out of fights, sticky situations, and open up plenty of new questlines. Barter is a good skill as well, because unlike fallout 3, there are many barter checks within conversation trees and during quests, which can net you double the cap reward sometimes. Other skills that I leveled quickly were lockpick(my second favorite) and guns. I wouldn't worry to much about energy weapons until later on when you start to get more advanced energy weapons-->Gauss Rifle, Tri-Beam Laser Rifle, Gatling Laser, Tesla Cannon...
NOTE..IT IS POSSIBLE TO MAX OUT EVERY SKILL LIKE IN FALLOUT THREE, BUT YOU HAVE TO PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT. To start you need a high starting intelligence, and then at level four, take the educated perk. It increases the distributed skill points by to each time you level up, and stacked with a high intelligence, you will have plenty of skill points to throw around.

PERKS...Intense Training- increase any S.P.E.C.I.A.L. point by one, can be taken 10 times.
Educated-Take early on!(level four) Increases skill points to distribut by two each level.
Toughness- +3 Damage Threshold, can be taken twice.
Strong Back- +50 pounds to carry. Lets you carry 50 more lbs of equipment and loot.
Those are just some I reccomend, there are plenty of helpful perks to take, just seperate the ones that would be nice from the ones that you need.

CAPS...Pick up everything!!! Kinda sorta really. I like to see if I need an item by checking its cap/weight ratio. (CWR) Take the weight, and divide it by the value. It gives you an overview of the caps your getting per pound, which, mixed with some common sense, can help you decide if the item is worth the weight. Also some animal parts are worth lots on caps--> radscorpion and cazador poison glands, deathclaw hands and eggs. Dont get attached to weapons either, sell them! They are the most effecient way to make caps. The only weapons I wouldn't sell are unique weapons because you can't get them ever again. I will explain unique weapons later. Also..do plenty of side quests!
-A good place to get a nice amount caps is Fiend territory. The feinds are weak generally, and carry lots of small weapons and armours that when stacked up can stream in some steady caps. Also, you get good karma for killing them.
NOTE... Before going on a killing spree in fiend territory, do the quest Three Card Bounty givin by a guy whose name escapes me. He is in Camp Mcarran, right outside the terminal building, just standing by the wall near the doors. He is african american for some extra description.
NOTE... Also, I wouldn't reccomend killing the fiends inside Vault 3 because you can trade chems for caps with the leader, Motor Runner. The only way to get to him is to pass a speech speech check(or some kind of check) upon going inside and being confronted by a fiend asking what you're doing. Also, no matter how many fiends you kill outside the vault, none of them inside will be hostile unless you attack one inside.

LEVELING UP...do side quests! Dont just ignore side quests , they have great rewards, including weapons sometimes. Also, kill things! Another efficient way is speech checks and those typ of things(skill checks). You even get XP for disarming frag mines and traps. So basically just do things as best you can and you'll level up fast.
NOTE..the cap level is 30. Each DLC (Lonesome Road, Dead Money, Honest Hearts, and Old World Blues) adds 5 to the level cap, increasing the max level to 50.

WEAPONS...Starting off the game, guns and melee are most common. Later however, energy weapons are very effective. Also, add weapons mods, a cool New Vegas unique feature...
These are the weapons I usually carry, they all have all available mods added-->DLC Weapons are Marked, Gun Runners Arsenal weapons are marked(GRA), and unique weapons are marked*
Anti Material Rifle(GRA Version), Holorifle(DLC, dead money), Gauss Rifle, Automatic Rifle(DLC, dead money), Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle*or Christines COS Silencer Rifle*(DLC, old world blues), Riot Shotgun, Survivalists Rifle*(DLC, honest hearts), All American*, Ballistic Fist(haven't found the unique one..), Mercy*, Gatling Laser, Katana(GRA, just for fun :D
There may be more... but im not really sure.
NOTE..unique weapons are versions of normal weapons found in the wasteland. They have different names and are usually stronger or have some advantage over their standard counterparts.

ARMOR...armor is important! It gives you bonuses depending on what armour it is, as well as damage threshold bonuses.
Keep in mind that power armor isnt always the best way to go, I personally use Elite Riot Gear(Lonesome Road DLC) with the Desert Ranger Combat Helmet(Honest Hearts DLC)In my opinion, the armors that look like the NCR Ranger Veteran on the box cover are the best. Those armors are..BASE GAME-The Ranger Combat Armor. LONESOME ROAD DLC-Riot Gear, Advanced Riot Gear and Elite Riot Gear. HONEST HEARTS DLC-Desert Ranger Combat Armor.

COMPANIONS...companians can give you healthy bonuses. You can use them like caravans too, I usually give them my loot, then take it back and sell it. All the companions are Cass-Mojave Outpost, Veronica-188 Trading Post, ED-E, Primm Boone-Novac, Rex-The Kings Building, Freeside, Lucy-Jacobstown, Raul-Black Mountain, Arcade Gannon-Old Mormon Fort(followers of the apocolypse). I like to run around with Boone and either Rex or ED-E. ED-E becomes more effective after you earn ranks of the Comrader-E perk from the Lonesome Road DLC.

FINAL NOTE...Remember, Fallout is such a diverse game. Save often and experiment with different things, if you dont like the outcome, delete the save. Also, make friends, I'm playing the Independent questline, and I'm Idolized by every one except the powder gangers and the Legion, which is hardly a problem because I killed Ceaser. The NCR, Boomers, and Brotherhood of Steel are great friends to have. So anyways, i'm done. Also, sorry for any spelling errors. And if anybody has anymore questions, go check out the fallout wiki, it has everything. Hope this helped :D

Something I forgot. Jury rigging may be the most useful perk. It makes repairs much easier...you can repair weapons or clothes with similar things. EX-repair power armor with metal armor. Really useful perk.

I got the ultimate edition and started with like an arsenal anyway so this may not count, but: grab a shotgun and ammo, and then do the DLC in order (just for the storyline between them) and when you do Lonesome Road grab the antagonist's duster. Then find a desperado hat on any enemy. With the duster, had, shotgun and/or 44. pistol you make the supreme wasteland badass.
