Can I Like It Without Being a Fanboy?

We all have our favorite games, games whose value we have argued before others who do not share our love, and we are unabashed fans of these games (I have yet to be beaten when discussing the merits of Civilization II).

And then there are the games that we like, games that we had a lot of fun with, but not games that we considered to be the best we ever played (Assassin's Creed is the best example I can think of in my case). Yet, when I mention that such-and-such game was fun, I am labeled a fanboy, a title that paints me as a love-lorn supporter of said game.

Can I say that a game is a blast and maybe even point out the good bits without being called a fanboy? Or is doing so auto-condemnation to the ranks of fandom?

If you like a game but aren't a fanboy yourself, then you are not condemned. Simple as that.

If someone's ignorantly labelling you a fanboy, it's their problem. Ignore them and move on or if your feeling particularly vindictive, smack them upside the head first, then move on.

Don't listen to other people, if you disagree with them then they will label you as a fanboy.

Eh, let whoever say whatever. If they feel the need to condemn I am sure someone else will jump on and argue with them. I remember a saying my dear old grand daddy used to tell me "dont feed the trolls."

I should mention that I brought up this subject because I had the audacity to note that "Halo" was a good game.

Which I totally agree with, Halo 3, particularly ODST, is pretty much my favourite game to play online. It's the only one I own, however. Fortunately, nobody's had the audacity to refer to me as a fanboy. At least, I don't think they have. I'm sure they have at one point.

You're only a fanboy if you deny the bad points. And I don't mean argue against them, I mean flat out deny them.

Liking a game is like "Hey this game is really good, I'll share it with my friends and people here"

Fanboy = "OH MY FN GOSH! THIS GAME IS THE BEST ANYONE WHO SAYS ANYTHING AGAINST IT IS A LOSER AND DESERVES TO DIE"

Don't be a fan boy.

I like to voice my opinion on games using good reason whether i'm saying a game is good, bad or comparing them.

I don't know what the definition of a fanboy is but some people seem to think that makes me one. It's not like i bash games without a reason for not liking it or try to force my opinion on anyone.

If that's what a fanboy is then it's not a bad thing to be one.

A fanboy is a person who obsessively tries to bring every thread back around to his favorite game or franchise and begins flaming when someone expresses their distate for the object of his desire. Usually has at least one account online that includes "Sephiroth" in the username.

In the following spoiler box is a list of games I adore and some accomplishments related to them.
It can easily be observed that I'm not a fanboy for any of them simply because I don't gush about them every waking moment.
There's a surprise, you clicked it!
Ace Combat Zero: 95% of missions beaten with S rank, Falken SP paint unlocked.
Half Life 2 Episode 2: All achivements unlocked including Get Some Grub and Little Rocket Man.
Paper Mario & The Thousand Year Door: Beat game in 25 hours, reached level 86 of the Pit of 100 Trials.
Sim City 3000: City of 4,000,000+, 500 years old, over $500,000 annual income, no history of loans.
Ratchet Deadlocked: All Hero cards unlocked
Burnout Revenge: Game 100% completed

You can like a game and not be a fanboy. Of course, if you reach a point where you're convincing yourself that Half-Life 2 actually had good puzzle sections or something along those lines, you're a fanboy.

Oh, and welcome to the Escapist! I'm sure you'll like it here, as long as you stay out of the basement.

Actually, Halo and fanboy-ism brings up a strange occurance that I've witnessed when dealing with people who've not had the pleasure of playing the older-school FPSs. I was a halo hater for a pretty long time, and when I finally got a 360 the first game I bought was Halo 3. For the multiplayer, of course. After having played it for a while I realized that while its not the messianic game people debase themselves for, its certainly fun to play. When expressing views like this to others, they went up in arms, trying to argue that halo is amazing and perfect. And these were caual console players. So, poeple can be 'fanboys' without actually being one. Pretty much all a fanboy is is someone that believes that their opinion is right while disregarding everyone else's opinion as blatantly wrong.

I personally feel one of the most fun FPSs to have been made was Turok (N64). Nothing relieved stress like shooting a dinosaur with a tactical nuke.

If you like it, you are a fan of it. Assuming your a male, and you like halo, you are now a fanboy of halo. Congratulations.

Just dont be an annoying fanboy.

And I believe the best FPS in the history of ever is Timesplitters. Surely we can co-exist.

Point is, you can like something without being a fanboy. I do it all the time. Anyone who instantly labels you a fanboy usually doesn't know what they're talking about and is trying to find a way to prove himself right. Maybe...

Internet psychology can be confusing...
