This is Kojima. This is his final MGS game. This, unlike the Witcher, has had nothing bad about it's graphics being downgraded.
Just an aside, it seems like MGS5's visuals were downgraded a bit too, mainly foliage and some rocks that were strewn about have been removed.
It also seems to have a sand colored filter over it, but I don't know if that's an overall artistic change, or just a time of day and weather effect. It looks a lot better without the filter IMO. The cliffside looking a bit flat is definitely because of TOD, and not because it was changed.
that's hardly a downgrade

They both are drowned in their own mythos that shy a lot of new people away (I've been playing MGS since they first came out and I get confused what the hell is going on constantly and The Witcher requires an encyclopedia reading in order to know what's going on).
I'm not going to get into the GOTY argument because, frankly, it's totally subjective, but I've been playing Witcher 3 and I'm actually shocked how much you DON'T really need to know a ton about the lore and the previous games to understand it (which I'll admit was a huge issue with Witcher 2). As long as you're willing to read the character descriptions and watch the opening intro sequence, you don't really need any prior knowledge to understand the game (at least so far).

The main competition will be on who has the coolest facial hair, Snake or Geralt.

It's a tough call.

Sigh... comparing two games that are of different genres and styles as if they're "in competition" with one another. Really? MGS V will sell simply because its got the weight of being the last Kojima MGS game (unless Konami's head somehow is surgically removed from its own ass and it does a complete 180 of all the BS of late...) plus its an over popular series. Witcher 3, while it may be a great game, still is less well known and more niche, though it has sold well... the statistics I could find were still that MGS has outsold Witcher as a series (MGS4 alone sold over 6 million copies) and probably will still do so in the end.
I'm not disparaging Witcher, but saying that its incomparable side-by-side because they're two different genres. Apple vs. Orange is always going to depend on what tastes you have and some people enjoy both, but still you can't compare them because they're different things.

Compete with what? Whether or not it gets a GotY award? Does it matter? Whether or not publication 34 thinks that The Witcher is better than MGSV doesn't really have an impact on how much you do or do not enjoy a game.

They're both vastly different genres and appeal to rather different types of gamer tastes. Having said that, they're both going to be phenomenal in their own right, but I think it would come down more to the fan base size rather than the quality of the games themselves.

Although I'd usually say the MGS franchise wins out, I'm inclined to say Witcher 3 has a chance. It's the Skyrim of 2015, it's the epic narrative-driven sandbox with all the pretty features in graphics and benchmarks the genre to date. AND it's on all platforms. I think it has the upper hand easily, but who knows, we're only halfway there yet.

Edit: Apparently MGSV is *not* exclusive, it's coming out on everything. Apologies for that. Disregard above.

Unless something has changed in the past few moths MGSV is also going to be on all platforms. The PC/Steam version will release two weeks after the console versions.

Anyway, MGSV can definitley compete with TW3, as for who will win GOTY that could go either way. Both are open world but very different games.

Metal Gear Solid is the more well known franchise, but TW has really made a name for itself since TW2 and TW3 is an open world RPG which has been all the rage among the mainstream since Skyrim.

As someone who has played a couple hours of Witcher 3 so far and has never played the first two I too am surprised how self contained it feels despite being in media res. I assume there are a lot of details and little nuances with the characters that are going over my head but it does a very good job accommodating new players I think which is probably because its the first to be released simultaneously on consoles.

OP: Yeah sure they can compete. Two different genre, styles, time periods, different goals in terms of gameplay and story. Whichever game is better will be completely subjective but MGSV does have a disadvantage seeing as how its a direct sequel to Peace Walker and even then its plot is all about what happened to the secret ending of a game that was hell to unlock and whose events were followed up in a $30 demo that only fans would probably buy. But who knows? Witcher 3 is still fresh from the oven and MGSV is still months away.

Oh dear, thank you for the correction, and apologies to anyone who read my post and got worried from misinformation. Lack of fact checking FTL. I honestly thought it was either exclusive, or the PC version was coming out a lot later. Aaand that's yet another reason less to buy a PS4, damn I was really getting hopeful that there'd be another reason to get on besides Bloodborne. This does bring things back in MGSV's favor I guess.

Geralt's beard grows in real time in "Witcher 3".

I think we may have a winner.

Holy shiznay! I'd not realized that!

Sorry Snake, but this round goes to the White Wolf.

I've heard that too but I'm not sure how much that will matter when it comes to brand new players to the series. The Witcher 2 gave the series that reputation and even if 3 fixes it, I'm guessing that rep will stay attached to it.

If it can break that rep, that'll be a big point in The Witchers favor when it comes to the popular GotY vote.

GOTY awards are completely pointless and mean nothing. I hope Metal Gear Solid V will be a great game whether or not its better to me than Witcher 3 does not matter as long as I enjoy it.

But I am sure both games will be showered with many pointless awards but if you are really worried you could give it your GOTY award it will mean about as much as anybody elses.

do you guys think MGS V: The Phantom Pain will be able to compete with The Witcher 3 for GOTY 2015, i hope so, but im worried?
You do realize there's more than one outlet that will give a GOTY to its viewers, right? I'm sure TPP will be better than TW3 in some publication's eyes.

In my personal belief? Yeah, they both look like good contenders, but I'm more partial to fantasy, swords and dragons and shit so TW3 has blown everything else out of the water this year.

Except maybe Hand of Fate, purely because I have NEVER seen ANYTHING quite like Hand of Fate and it was just so refreshing, shiny, new and unique and I want everyone to play it. Seriously, go play Hand of Fate, GOTY 2015.

I got The Witcher and The Witcher 2 on amazon for 5 bucks. I sill felt ripped off. I bought the most of the MGS games more than once. Yeah I've never liked the witcher much so I'm going to say yes.

I'd rather play a sequel to MGS4, with a new protagonist.
There isn't much to downgrade. I was surprised at how unimpressive Ground Zeroes looked on my PC. I posted the following on another forum. They were taken on the highest settings.
I think Revengance kind of counts as a sequel to MGS4.

Also, what the buggery? I'm going to have to check Ground Zeros on my 360, because I do NOT remember it looking like that on that. Are you sure you have that on the highest settings? Because those shadows look awful and the game world looks really....flat and blurry.

yeah but won't MGS V being a cross gen game limit it in ways unlike The Witcher 3 which is just purely "next gen"(current gen)
How would it limit it? Yeah there might be a few less pixels in Big Boss boot (though unlikely because FOX engine platform optimization) but so what? It's the gameplay that's important.

Worried about what exactly? There's a hundred different "GoTY" awards and at the end of the day does it matter? It's about what /you/ deem your GoTY. If X outlet deems Y game GoTY and you disagree, do you doubt your own experience? Nevermind the fact that MGS V isn't out yet. I've yet to play Witcher 3, but even if I end up having more fun with it than I do with MGS V, will that diminish the great experience I'm likely to have with MGS 5? Of course not.

More to the point, this is so apples and oranges, it's not even funny. Lastly, do you not have a question mark on your keyboard? A statement isn't a question :(
