They'll survive well enough, but I can tell they've already started losing some of their older fanbase (including me). I'm fed up of this gimmicky shit they put on the Wii - I haven't even turned the thing on for a year now.
I haven't turned on my 360 for about 5 months now. what does that mean?
I am currently replaying my PS2 and Gamecube games.

Companies nowadays seem to be content with releasing half a game. My example is that Prince of Persia (2008) and Assassin's Creed are really both halves of what made the Sands of Time Trilogy great.
PoP2008 took the acrobatic functionality and a sense of style, and AC took the sword fighting and storytelling. They both have the free-running, but they both felt really incomplete compared to SoT.

I think that sums up my frustration with this generation: everything feels like half a game. The only "full" games are games released on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and WiiWare

Of course Nintendo will survive, they've been around for over a hundred years and chances are, they'll be around for another hundred.

Yeah, that's why people buy any console over a gaming PC.

Seriously though, I bought a Wii for the same reason I bought any other Nintendo console, for the Nintendo games. It seems to me that Nintendo has released the same amount of first party "hardcore" games as last generation. So I don't understand why people are complaining that Nintendo only makes "casual" games. I don't even see that much difference between this generation and last generation; Nintendo still makes good games and as always Nintendo has crappy third-party support (although much crappier this time around).

If Nintendo survived through the N64 and Gamecube of course it will survive with the Wii. Not to mention Nintendo also has the DS.

What Nintendo will have now is association.
"It's by Nintendo"
"Oh, they did Wii Fit, didn't they? We should buy that"

They will survive. The core of the market (families) now recognises their products.

Also have you seen Microsoft's Japanese sales figures?

Nintendo will always survive purely because there's always going to be a place for family/party games which Sony and Microsoft do little of and not as well as Nintendo do.

I think the main problem is that while Nintendo's old fans have largely grown up and gotten new tastes, Nintendo have mostly focused on polishing their gems rather than digging up new ones. And what new things Nintendo do have to offer is not made for them, it's made to get nongamers into gaming. Apparently, this counts as betrayal, although I'm not sure how, considering that Nintendo are still churning out just as many of their staple franchises as they always have. If anything, they seem to have accelerated a bit in recent years - the Wii has more non-spinoff Mario games than the N64 and Gamecube combined (Galaxy and NSMBWii, with Galaxy 2 coming up, compared to Mario 64 and Sunshine).

Now, I can understand if Mario and Zelda no longer appeal to someone who's grown up with them, but they're still quality titles, especially for those who have NOT grown up with them. Accusing Nintendo of abandoning their fanbase strikes me as somewhat odd, all things considered. If anything, it's those who no longer want Mario and Zelda who have gone on to other games.

You can put your fingers in your ears and claim they've stopped making games for the "hardcore", but they haven't done anything of the sort. They're continuing what they've always been doing, which may or may not qualify as "H4rdc0r G4m3z", depending on your personal definition. And other than that, they've expanded to other areas. Their focus has not narrowed, and their output of their old products has not declined.

Do you think they'll by and large abandon the third-party hardcore market and focus their effort on games for the entire family (I don't mean kiddie games, but games anyone can enjoy), or will they continue to try and get some of the market share that the 360 and PS3 have?

Of course they'll survive, they just won't be seeing any of my money until they go back to releasing series contenders when it comes to games.

Once upon a time they had the best line up and the Nintendo seal of approval meant something...0o

Until then I'll stick to my PC, Playstation, and even Xbox when they go back to making a console that works...0o

OP puts up some good arguments and i agree with him. Nintendo are going to have to pull something out its ass, but it will be hard for them. I mean, their audience are mainly aimed at casual gamers and even those who dont have a "high" intrest in games. They could boost their visuals up with new graphics and everything, but this may put some of their audience off because it will lose their cartoonish fun feel.. not to mention the price rise that would have to come with the new hardware. Also Nintendo may actully have to make an orginal game to keep people intrested!

EDIT: Yes, they will survive, but Sony & Microsoft may take the leading position further on int he future when Nintendo have nothign to offer. Hell, there could even be a new contender thrown in at some point? Who knows, i look forward to see what 2010 and beyond hold for us.

They're hitting the casual market now. That's like feeding on ants: they'll survive, but to us they'll never seem the same.

LMAO. So do you think when they evolve to be super-intelligent the cockroaches will think world 8 in Super Mario Bros is hard as we thought it was when we were kids?

For awhile now the Nintendo DS by itself has been an unstoppable tank, so that alone is enough to make Nintendo last.

I don't really understand the complaint that Nintendo is leaving behind its original audience. They made 2 kick ass mario games, a Zelda game, a Metroid game, a smash bros, a mario kart, and they have another mario and metroid game on the way. All of these games have gotten great reviews so I cannot fathom as to why people think they are leaving behind the original audience. It's true a lot of their family games are crap, but there's also family friendly games that aren't crap. All Mario games for example.

I think the fact that Nintnedo is the only true games company left in the console business is a major plus for them - people trust the brand a hell of a lot more i find.

Nintendo isn't going anywhere, in fact with all these new gimmicks it could out live anything, the apocalypse will come before Nintendo's end.

I don't know if I even care anymore about this new Nintendo anyway, these new games that only work with the annoying Wiimote don't appeal to me and are not as interesting as the past generation games were. I think they have lost their magic touch.

Nintendo has been around longer than most of us here. They've had a lot of experience in competition in the market; I think they're gong to be just fine.

Hehe. It's been so long since I've played it, I doubt I'd do very well with it. I'm sure it'd be hell of a lot harder than World 8 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Other than the very end, that was a breeze.
