I think your missing the big picture here. Have you actually seen the pile of money Nintendo is sitting on, they'll be fine.

They've lost alot of respect from actual gamers, but hey, who needs respect when you've got money, and legions of loyal new fans.

After my beloved Gamecube, this just doesn't seem like a good transition. I was enthralled by the Wii when it first came out (I still have it, so I don't despise it.) But the only games I have are actual freakin' games, and I only have like 12.

Thankfully the DS still remains an excellent portable system.

Maybe they can just pull their finger out of their proverbial arse and make some games that aren't crap and gimmicky.
Though i would like that to happen, thats not how they are going to survive. If they want to still exist 5 years from now, they are going to have to continue churning out shitty game after shitty game to appeal to the masses of extreme casual gamers (95% of their fanbase i reckon now).

If they were to turn to making games that are appealing to gamers, they would die. simple as. We have mostly all moved on now, accepting nintendos fate as the casual console and just simply isn't the demand.

In the companies eyes they are being told something along these lines:

Lots of effort into an original IP, fuck all cash return.
Piece of shit we will make over the next day, Enough cash to technically impoverish small countries.

EDIT: When i think about it, i'm now starting to ask 'Do i want Nintendo to survive?'

Yes the Wii will last because it is based around family games which some suckers will always buy. Yes Nintendo could make a genuine effort to get back into mainstream gaming which I would like to see as I was disappointed with the Wii not that is has no mature titles just that they are far and few and even fewer are good.

They went over to the casual game market and i dont see them coming back to hardcore gamers anytime soon considering the amount of money they're making off it

I think that the casual gamer pool of money will take a long time to drain out. There's just too many of them. And they're not getting any more perceptive of what's a good game and what isn't.

Even in the Gamecube era, Nintendo was still making the biggest profits. I think alot of people underestimate the power hold they have in Japan.

Nintendo will be around forever. No matter how bad the third party games get, real gamers will keep coming back because they're the only people to go to to get the new smash bros. ne Mario, new Matroid and new Zelda. They have the lasting icons. Who does Microsoft have? Master Cheif and Marcus Fenix? Yeah, they'll be gone as soon as better games come out. And what about Sony? Ratchet, Nathan Drake, Kratos? Okay the first and last are forever, but Nathan is in the same park as Fenix and Cheif.

Nintendo will do fine, but they are going to get taken down a peg. They put out the Wiimote, and then decided that that was more then enough innovation for the decade. Sony and Microsoft both have innovated elsewhere, and are poised to dethrone Wiis motion controls. As video games become more mainstream, even PS3 and 360s become more mainstream, ruining that casual advantage. Plus, Wii is basically a last gen console with motion control, and there 3rd party stuff is not up to par. Age is showing. Of course handhelds are Nintendos place of undisputed power, and between that and Wii sale already, so they have the money they need, and mario, zelda, etc guerentees that Nintendo will always survive. Besides, Nintendo isn't going to retreat back to other money making avenues, because video games are there whole business. My prediction is that as this generation enters the twilight years, Wii will remain on top, but sales for that single year won't show it. Next generation, They will put out more powerful, but still least powerful of the bunch, system that looks a lot like the initial launch of the the PS3 in robustness, without the potential to get so much better later on in the generation. Nintendo will scramble, put a band aid on there wounds, draw in some customers with there franchises and brand loyalty, and end up in the black, but no where near as far in as Sony and Microsoft. Then, hopefully, they will smarten up.

There is simply no question as to whether Nintendo can still survive in the video game arms-race that consoles have always and will always be involved in.

Nintendo has the money and the drive to keep pushing out consoles and repetitive titles until they stop selling, and that will be never. There were generations of people raised on Nintendo games and those generations are now raising their children on Nintendo games.

there on top now. but i believe that they cant top what they have now in sales. i also believe that Nintendo put themselves in a corner by focusing in a odd gaming market with a odd control scheme. i doubt that there next console will be backwards compatible with the wii games putting Sony and Microsoft ahead in the next gen console sales. all Nintendo can do now is enhance there current console with better control better graphics and most importantly better games.

but i doubt that Nintendo will continue in this path. i give them 2 more console wars until there the same as Sega. a 3rd party software company.

You'll probably realise at some point that you don't need to win the generational console battle to make a profit.

Nintendo will continue in the business as long as it makes a profit that is adequate to its shareholders. It doesn't matter if the Wii no longer holds a price advantage - everybody with the money has one already. The Wii is reaching saturation in Japan, like the DS, so price differences are not going to be an issue on its home turf, just the same as they won't elsewhere.

All that matters now is that games get sold. THAT is the challenge Nintendo faces currently, and that is only a matter of signing on with some better third party developers... or else, living on the console sales only. Both of which would be adequate responses economically until the next generation of consoles begins.

Forever is a pretty damn big time. No one realy predicted the Crash of 1983 a year or two before the fact. And what a f*cking fact that was.

Times change. What conveys the meaning of "casual" these days certainly ignores most hardass arcade games were back in the days of Pac-Man Fever. Damn hard games that you still could and would (and should, unless you just robbed a church's donation box) play casually.

And by "casual", meaning to occur without regularity, period.

So why wouldn't Nintendo die eventually? Our collective inability to foresee the future does not kill this possibility.

They have a very large non-gamer market, a market among converting gamers, and a decent-sized, very dedicated longtime gamer fanbase.

I can't see anything short of the apocalypse shutting Nintendo down, whatever their market share is. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some more Smash Brothers to play.
