Isn't there a rule of the internet that describes the general mindset towards Nintendo? "Nintendo is always doomed, no exceptions." Or something like that.

I think it applies here.

Let's not forget about the DS, DS Lite and DSi. These have the highest sales in handhelds and I'm just guessing but I'm pretty sure the DS has more games than the PSP. I don't know for sure. But anyway, Nintendo will find a way to survive if not thrive.

there on top now. but i believe that they cant top what they have now in sales. i also believe that Nintendo put themselves in a corner by focusing in a odd gaming market with a odd control scheme. i doubt that there next console will be backwards compatible with the wii games putting Sony and Microsoft ahead in the next gen console sales. all Nintendo can do now is enhance there current console with better control better graphics and most importantly better games.

but i doubt that Nintendo will continue in this path. i give them 2 more console wars until there the same as Sega. a 3rd party software company.
Doesn't that assume that the PS4 and whatever the next XBOX is will be backwards-compatible? History has taught us otherwise.

Plus, I heard that motion controls are present in the next console, only more 'compact', making your bac-comp argument completely moot. As for the rest of it, we'll just have to wait and see.

Ugh, some of the responses on this thread... I don't know why I'm surprised, but there are a lot of people throwing terms like "real gamers" around who really should think before they type.

Fact is, Nintendo still make quality games. Third-parties, on the other hand, will always go for the big sellers and churn out crap for it. As they did for the PS2, the PS1, and SNES. Once upon a time, anyone who had a Speccy could churn out a game and sell it. Crap has always existed in droves, it's just now gaming is so popular, the crap gets a little more exposure. Jesus, it hardly makes the good games less enjoyable. The amount of good games on the Wii more than justify its purchase as a games console, and Nintendo have been churning out the cream of the gaming industry for a quarter of a century now.

So no, Nintendo is going nowhere in the forseeable future, and the games industry will be a much bleaker place if they ever do.

They are really going to fail in the end. They have..."lost" the "competitive gamer"...
Most of the people that were playing N64's and GameCubes have jumped onto the "Online Gaming" bandwagon. And Nintendo really only has one market left to focus their games on...the "Family Gamer"...the type of gamer that rarely buys games, and usually spend Sunday nights playing Wii Bowling with the family as sort of a "game night". And Nintendo has lost their old customers that were the hardcore gamers who were willing to shell out a lot of money for a good game.

As a result, the Wii couldn't even compete with the 360 or PS3, let alone the PC. It was cheaper, yes, more affordable for the casual gamer. But there are only so many casual gamers...and they can only make their systems so cheap before they just start losing lots of money to their competitors.

If Nintendo doesn't hook back the hardcore gamers, they are going to lose a large market share and eventually headed for failure. I think they are trying to get the hardcore gamers back with games like Super Mario World clones, and remakes of old games, in order to spark that "nostalgic" feeling. And it's just not there...it's just not the same.

Nintendo will survive purely on the handheld if they ever truly get taken out of the console market. They dominate with the best games. Having both PSP and DS, and having had every nintendo handheld and the gamegear. Nintendo has the games even when they don't necessarily have the most graphically enhancing graphics.

:Insert TWBB joke here:

But serious, they've been on the market for a long while and seem to be staying strong. I think they can handle it.

I used to be a diehard Nintendo fan. I bought a N64 while all my mates got Playstations, I loved my GameCube and it's sublime (and imo) superior 1st party games but as soon as I saw the Wii I knew exactly what their plan was and all the love just drained away.

I haven't touched a Nintendo game since Metroid Prime 2 and until they start actually catering for gamers again dont plan to in the future. I really hope Miyamoto does leave and joins a studio like Square or Capcom, his genius is wasted at Nintendo right now.
Start [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Galaxy_2] catering [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Smash_Bros._Brawl] for [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Emblem:_Radiant_Dawn] gamers [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon_heartgold] again [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_Out_Wii]?

Nintendo will survive but it will be because of the casual gamer and the fact that they have the best handhelds. My Wii is coated in dust but my DS gets played just about every day.

I have heard the terms 'Real Gamer' and 'Hardcore Gamer' thrown around in this thread. Can someone please explain what that means, because this is one gamer who believes Nintendo continues to create quality games for it's core market.

They will survive, they know what they're doing.

It will definitely survive, but the wii 2 or whatever the hell they end up calling it won't do nearly as good as the wii as they pretty much lost most of the actual "gamer" demographic this generation (everyone I know who bought the damn thing regrets it and has since purchased another console) so its sales will come almost exclusively from old people and little kids. Not that nintendo will have a problem with that, as they'll make a monsterous amount of money either way.

Does it really make sense to be asking this question when Nintendo is way out in front in both hardware and software sales?

Nintendo hasn't always had it as well as they have it now. They battled fiercely with Sega during the Genesis / SNES days. The N64 was not nearly the success that they had hoped, and the Gamecube couldn't touch the PS2 juggernaut. In addition, it had to contend with Microsoft's Xbox thrown into the ring.

Now, the Wii is flying high, ahead of the competitors in both hardware sales and first party sales (third party is debatable).

But can it hold it? The Wii, though initially priced far lower than its competitors, no longer holds a major price advantage. It's motion technology is being copied by both Sony and Microsoft, and the novelty of it may be wearing thin among many. This is, after all, the console that has been called the 'most expensive board game on earth' http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/wii-is-most-expensive-board-game-on-earth/

So the question is, do you think that Nintendo can find some way to survive? It's sitting on a pile of money now, but can they come up with a way to hold on to their market share?
...you're kidding, right?

The company's been around for a hundred years, and it's not because they don't know how to survive. In fact, aren't they the only ones who were making a profit until recently?

Hell, if Sony was a video game company, and not just a huge electronics giant that just HAPPENS to make video game systems, I'd give THEM the low odds.
