Can people not enjoy movies anymore?

Lots of people who are critical of movies do still enjoy them, I wasn't that impressed by dark knight but I still enjoyed it. Being critical isn't a bad thing, it's only bad if you let your criticisms of the negatives become the only thing you think about.

While I don't know about Dark Knight Rises I have to say that the majority of movies that have been coming out since 1998 have been complete and utter garbage. There are plenty of good ones out there but the sheer number of bad ones make it seem like I'm looking for a needle in a planet made up of hay.

There's nothing wrong with critiquing nitpicks, so long as you can recognize the scale of them, and how they end up mattering overall. I think harsh critique, in the long run, winds up making better movies (or games, or books, or manatee polo lessons, etc.)

Let's take The Dark Knight Rises. The story structure is very awkward, with some jarringly random switches into what happens next, the logic is all over the place, and the whole thing, and despite telling the biggest story yet, it still feels much less satisfying then either of it's predecessors.

And you know what? I really liked it anyway, because despite those problems, it's still a good movie.

I wasn't meaning it as a direct analogue. I was just pointing out how low of a percentage of people actually take the time to complain about something.
That still doesn't help your case. It instead points to the fact that the number of dissatisfied people is far greater than the number of vocal dissatisfied people.

So, opinions aside, it upset me that so many people on the internet are complaining about the smallest details, y'know, the nit-picking and the complaining of unrealistic situations. C'mon, really? you are upset about unrealistic bits and pieces in a film that was inspired by a comic book where a guy dresses as a bat and fights crime?
First of all, I liked Dark Knight Rises. I thought it was a fun summer popcorn flick, and I felt it fit in reasonably well with the other two Christopher Nolan Batman movies, other than a few fairly minor plot holes.

That said, I don't entirely agree with you on the bigger picture. I don't really see what's wrong with writing a critique of something if you felt there was something in a movie that you felt was worth your time to critique. I'd like to think that filmmakers actually listen to the responses that they get from their audiences, and I'd like to think that they take constructive criticism to heart in order to create even better films in the future to please everyone (or most everyone, anyway).

Look at Prometheus. It certainly wasn't a bad movie if looked at on its own... but as an "Alien" franchise movie is was fairly abysmal. I'm a self-proclaimed Alien fanboy, and I'm not going to let all of the things I felt were completely inconsistent with the lore and overall tone of the series slide just because the cinematography happened to be pretty good. Trust me, I wanted to love Prometheus. I tried my absolute best to love it... but after thinking about what I saw over the following few days I couldn't help but feel more and more disappointed, to the point where I can honestly say that I feel Alien: Resurrection, despite all of its many flaws, is actually a better movie within the franchise than Prometheus was. That depresses the hell outta me.

I'm not saying I advocate being a total hipster and trash-talking everything that's popular... just that if you have a problem with something, it shouldn't really matter whether it's popular are not. If someone didn't like Dark Knight Rises for any particular reason, and you disagree with them, how does it really affect your enjoyment of the movie? To each their own.

Ok, so i went to see Dark Knight Rises last night and...i fucking loved it. It was a good conclusion to the saga and i legitamately did not see the twists and turns coming, also with an epic score, this is just my new favourite movie.

I admit, there would be a few things i would change up in the film but not to the point that i would despise it,rant and rave about it because i was too busy having a damn good time.

TL;DR, Enjoy your movies guys (and hell, even games) sure there is some shit out there, but really just enjoy yourself and think of entertainment as an experience and not something to critique.

/unpopular opinion.
I feel largely the same way. The movie, in my opinion, was fantastic.
I honestly feel sorry for people who go into movies with their minds set on nit-picking every little detail they didn't approve of. How are they able to enjoy the movie when they're so focused on pointing out all of its faults! (Insignificant as they may be.)
People just don't enjoy and appreciate things like they used to.

My question is can people not enjoy anything anymore? I mean the kind of complaining and nit-picking that you describe happens every fucking time something new comes out, whether it be book, movie, game, TV series, whatever. WTF Internet??? Unless it's your job to nit-pick the hell out of things, chill out and quit looking for things to complain about. You'll live longer.

Why should we not critique our entertainment? A strong piece of work will withstand criticism and even perhaps might be enhanced by a closer look at why it worked. I've heard some interesting critiques of TDKR which changed how I look at several scenes. It's fine to passively enjoy, but people watch movies for different things. For TDKR in particular, Nolan was trying to make it more than just a superhero movie, with all the Batman as symbol talk or the OWS vibes. He's inviting discussion with these ideas, so why should we not discuss?

I had a lot of criticisms about this movie, but there was a lot I also really enjoyed. All in all, I think it was a movie that couldn't possibly live up to the hype on a number of levels, and that sort of movie invites a storm of nitpicking. Its quality or lack thereof is oversold by both sides of the argument.

Well, I think I became more critical since the Star Wars prequels. I always had the original trilogy movies like perfect in my mind and then comes these crappy movies, with so many faults. I was never the same again and now everytime I watch any movie I just see Jar-Jar Binks.

Another reason must be that our imagination is always better than anything that can be done on a movie, so our expectations may never be fully satisfied.

I really liked Bane's working class uprising thing. I thought the movie went astray when it became a "find the bomb quick before it blows!" movie and lost its focus on the class warfare stuff. Not that my opinion was even asked for :p

There will always be people who are never satisfied- and rightfully so. Suppose that tomorrow, everyone collectively agreed to enjoy every movie and withhold all criticisms until the end of time. What would be the motivation for filmmakers to improve their craft? If they know nobody's going to say a word against it, why bother trying to make a good film at all?

We need critics to make sure that drive for improvement never diminishes. Yes, that means even coming down on great movies like The Dark Knight Rises. It was good, but still had flaws- every movie does.

My group of people in Pittsburgh loved it. We clapped and cheered at the end.

And it has NOTHING to do with the football team or stadium, I'm sure.

I haven't seen the movie yet so I don't know just what points might polarize some people. However, I've noticed that as I get older, my tastes in movies become somewhat more discerning. There is a part of me that wishes I could enjoy movies like I did back as a teenager or in university but times change. That isn't to say I'm a movie snob these days but I can't take pleasure from certain mindless genres like I used to.

Dark Knight Rises failed in a really big way. I am a massive batman fan but I saw the trailers and I just.. didn't get excited about it. I didn't get angry at them, or excited, I was just apathetic. I watched a review from someone I share opinions with and they confirmed what I feared from watching the trailers. If I had been at all excited for the movie I wouldn't have needed to do that.

I loved the Avengers, and not intending hyperbole, i'd say Spiderman was the best Superhero movie thus far. So how about instead of implying that no one can ever enjoy any movie, that you accept that some people have differing tastes then you.

[Humor] Heck, some people thought the Transformers movies were awesome. I wouldn't trust those people with sharp objects, but I won't begrudge them for different tastes. [/humor]

I think any problems that can be attributed to the Dark Knight Rises can be simply because it is being compared the the Dark Knight and subsequently Heath Ledger.
Its like Portal 2, its a great game but it has to be compared to the original. Its a losing battle with sequels to such legendary acclaim.
