Can Porn be Art?

We all know that porn can have artistic elements to it, and one would not be hard pressed to find naked ladies in a mueseum, but can porn be art and vice versa?

Its my opinion that the two occupy fundamentally different mind sets. One has a definite goal in viewing pornography, while in art, the experience is typically much looser and undefined. The second a porn shows you something that causes you to step back and introspect, can it truly be called a porn any more?

I suppose what I'm asking you, the escapist, is whether or not I can fap to the Mona Lisa.

Sometimes I think people just make topics simply because they can. This is one of those. Do you honestly care?

Porn isn't art because it has never set out to be art. Porn is used for one and one thing only. To get your jollies off to.

Art on the other hand...well, someone who is actually artsy will have to tell you that.

Well, should porn go buy the original definition of exploitive material or the usual use of stuff you can wank to?

Bur frankly, either way it's kind of an opinion. Personally I think the latter could be, in certain cases.

Makes sense. Actually, on deviantART, they restrict you from posting porn but encourage artistic nudity.

I guess it depends on what you see. One man might see the metaphorical suicide of the American dream, and another might just see tits. It's all subjective.

Well, you could have a pornographic image that is artistic enough for it to be considered "art", but then it stops being "porn". There are plenty of paintings that are "art" that are of pornographic images, they are just not considered porn any more.

To answer your question, I suppose you could fap to anything, and hey Mona Lisa has those hot eyes ...

I'm sure it could be if it wanted to be, but let's face it: there's no payoff. Porn has one purpose, and endeavours towards art would most likely get in the way of that.

i saw that show "next great artist" or whatever, and it made me cringe,

i dont see the beauty in tangled wire, or a bunch of random dots on a canvas.
as much as i love painting and art, i fail to see how random shit any 5 year old can do brilliant.

then again mabey my mind is too small to comprehend it! :0

I guess it could be, if you took time and care, actually got a good story for intimacy. I think porn art would have to be like a movie, not just a video of people having sex.

Porn being a subset of whatever medium it is (film, photography, painting, whatever), I suppose it can be artistic. But as a genre, I don't think it is. The entire purpose of it is to get someone stimulated for a few minutes, then its purpose is done. Despite artistic elements (and absolutely everything has artistic elements), considering the overall purpose of it has nothing to do with art and everything to do with sex, I don't think it is.

A lot of old paintings of nude women were originally considered porn, but now they're art. Why? Maybe we see older works as artistic automatically, because we tend to be exposed to old art and current pornography more than vice versa. Consider this 116-year-old "pornographic" video:

<youtube=sNXNfcEo5dQ>

It was considered scandalous then, but seems so non-pornographic now that the only other definition that fits is art. Since this implies it drops pornographic status, but was always artistic, we know that it was once simultaneously art and porn.

Another man might see graphite etchings on white paper, but that doesn't take away the original intent.
And then there's the guy who originally intends it to be porn, but gets lucky because people think it's art. XD

Yes, porn can be art. Anything can be art. Jackson Pollock flung paint on a canvas and called it 'art'. Some people would disagree, but by definition, it is art. Is it good art? That's subjective. I think it's crap, but others have paid millions for it.

As for porn, yes, it is art. From the crappiest amateur webcam to the nastiest beast-scat gonzo to the classiest Vivid feature, it's all by definition art. Is it good art? Again, that's subjective. I think most of it is crap, but there are guys like Andrew Blake, Marty Zion, Michael Ninn, Roberto Valtuena, Viv Thomas, Marc Dorcel, and Jack the Zipper that try to make beautiful porn. A lot of people would call their movies disgusting filth no matter what, but I think their movies are indeed 'good art' ... even with the facials.
