Can Red Alert 3 restore my confidence in RTS?

== In the beginning ==
Ever since 1996, I have been playing Command and Conquer, and one reason i always prefered C&C over other RTSs is because it was simple, realistic with a slight edge. Command and Conquer was a simple game with 2 factions. Red Alert had 2 factions, and different countrys for show. Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun followed suit, Red Alert 2 was simular to Red Alert, in that there were lots of different countries, however they only different in 1 unit, which makes it simple. Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge was very disappointing for me. The 3rd faction didn't fit well into the game play for me, made a game that already had epic game play, feel bloated.

== The end of westwood==
Around the year of 2003 EA disbanded Westwood, to put their logo on the cover, and came up with Command and Conquer Generals, now, this is a one of few games which I beleive did better with lots of sub factions that were in the expansion, Zero hour, the names of the factions clearly stated what they did, they all had a role in a 2+ team game and every faction and I will be a bit bias, but I could still win in a 1v1,2v2 wiht any faction, and once the patch(v1.04+) came out. Now a series of facepalms followed. First wiht certain buildings not being able to expand the building area, and then C&C3Kane's wrath. Now this was a big shock to me. I looked at the 3 subfactions of the 3 factions disparingly, but no matter, I still thought it was worth to try the game, and after reading what each of the subfactions do I thought it was time to try the game, and I was VERY displeased. First of all, it ruined my opinion of what the factions are for, GDI the money thursty faction with the best tanks, NOD the spammers with the weekest, but most units. That wasn't the worst part of the game. Epic had a reason. Command and Conquer 3(v1.03) was a surprise to me, since EA made a sorted game, now, I know I am a GDI fan, units, EPIC UNITs, bloody rediculas, this changed the game 100% for me, I always viewed C&C as a "realistic" game with a slight edge to it, but this took the cake and vomitted all over it. The main reason I liked C&C was thrown into the bin.

== Now what?==
Now that my favourate RTS has gone down the hill, I had to resort to MMORPGs and FPSs, lets hope Red Alert 3 can pull the title back.

...mate, you realise that there are other RTS than the Command and Conquer series, yeah? Go play Supreme Commander or StarCraft, man. Shake things up a bit.

I'll be playing Red Alert 3 not because I expect it to be a fantastic RTS, but for the multiplayer coop campaign, and the insanely awesome cutscenes. The cool units and the water and that are just fluff on top.

Also you're looking for realism in Red Alert 3?

The same game that has parachuting bears? Cartoony graphics and cheesy cutscenes?
Seriously?

I think you would have more luck of finding a diamond in a coal mine.
I'm so amped up for RA3 exactly BECAUSE of those things. If I wanted realism, I'd probably go play World in Conflict or something. But... I'd rather watch Tim Curry assassinate Einstein :D

I usually don't like RTSs, not even C&C, but there is one RTS series that I, as a RTS-not-liker (yeah, I realize that's not a word) love, Warhammer 40,000.

Man, that RTS is SOOOO awesome. I love it.

I love Red Alert 3 so far. Just finished the Soviet campaign. The cutscenes are as cheesy and funny as always and the gameplay is great. I love all the wacky units and strange abilities they have.

Agreed, an underlying sense of self-parody is what makes the game great and a joy to play.

The game is great!

It isn't :).

It's a gimmick, and the tactical side of the game comes down to robot/apocalypse tank/bomber rush.
I was meaning it was great by Boobies.

You're judging the whole RTS genre on C and C?

C and C sucks, those super units disgust me.

Play Starcraft. Starcraft is the best of the best. Warhammer and Company of Heroes aren't bad either.

If you want realism, try Cossacks I and Cossacks II. They really have a nice feel to them. Command and Conquer is not the RTS flagship.

Warcraft 3

I once told someone about it and they said:

"Uh, I don't play MMOs"
Oh the horror.

I actualy liked command and conquer 3 and kanes wrath but then I don't play multiplayer so I'm judging solely on the storyline (which I love-rise legion). C+C games always have self-parody if you look hard enough they are a game for you know...fun? Not boiling it down into "if I build X of Y I am unstoppable" like most people seem to do. There are plenty of serious RTS around though command and conquer isn't the whole genre.

...And this.

The C&C franchise isn't the ONLY RTS series out there. I personally still like C&C, but I agree that they have gone downhill since EA threw Westwood away like a used condom. You should NOT hate an ENTIRE GENRE over one series. Go try the great games from Blizzard, Relic, Supreme Commander, etc. etc. Then there are the RTT games like World in Conflict and Total War. There are TONS of great RTS games out there that don't have C&C plastered across it. If you have lost faith in the RTS genre because of a single series then you are quite clearly not looking at the other great games the genre can offer. You don't need to stick to just a single game franchise in a genre, you can branch out and try new things. It isn't like the developers will come to your house and attack you for not being a loyal fanboy.
