Warcraft 3

I once told someone about it and they said:

"Uh, I don't play MMOs"
Oh the horror.
Ugh, WoW has completely overshadowed all the other Warcraft games (mostly 3, of course). I'm sure a lot of people don't even know there were three other Warcraft games (expansions not included) before WoW. I don't even like WoW!

So all this talk about RTSs and no one has mentioned the greatest RTS series ever made:

Homeworld

I'm not sure the RTS gods can let this travesty go without punishment, but I'll leave it up to them to smite everyone. Seriously though, screw all these other RTSs being listed. If you want a game that has actual strategy beyond braindead base building, Homeworld is the game for you. No other game has gotten close to this masterpiece and most others are hobbled by terrible unit AI, especially Supreme Commander.

Actually, those were Striker/Chopper VX robots and Tsunami Tanks, just to clarify. The robot that seemingly "jumps" in the intro video is just landing after transforming from a helicopter, and Tsunami Tanks are amphibious, much like a number of units in the game.

Hello everyone,

I have just recently purchased Red Alert 3. I find pretty much everything about it absolutely amazing, everything from the gameplay all the way through the cutscenes, and of course the poster of all the females from the game it comes with.
Now onto the gameplay mechanics
Command and Conquer have always implemented a faster style of RTS, which i find the most immersive and easy to get into. it has only one resource needed to purchase units. It's simple, and works great. All you need to do to stop an enemy from pumping out conscripts to garrison every building on the map is just to destroy either their refineries or ore collectors. It does not focus on the economical aspect of war, thus the name COMMAND AND CONQUER, not TRY TO EXPAND AND SIT THERE. Now i find not only the C&C series awesome, for example Rise of Nations. it does things absolutely differently from C&C games. It has all resources from Knowledge through food all the way up to oil. To even launch an attack at your enemy you would need to build up all your cities, keep track of every single resource and check p on your tech level and upgrade as you go, and pretty much everything is upgradable, units through attrition damage. that makes for very long games. honestly the has not been a game of Rise of Nations that I have played that lasted less than 1.5 hours. It's definitely fun, but plays extremely slow. That said in the middle ground of it all sits Starcraft. With two resources and being moderate in speed. More powerful units created slowly and expansively , and of course the cheapo zerglings give it that average feeling. It's just an RTS. It's simple, and honestly it would be accused of ripping everyone else off it it did anything differently, that's why Starcraft 2 is doomed to me.(AND NO BLIZZARD I WILL NOT PAY 150 USD, + A MONTHLY FEE TO PLAY IT ) Nothing new besides the graphics, and just different overpowered units.
Lets think quickly about these three games mentioned: Red Alert (series), Rise of Nations, Starcraft. All of them implement different styles. Red Alert always being over the top, Rise of Nations sitting there thinking if it has enough money, metal, rocks, knowledge, oil, and food to stave off an attack, and Starcraft being the controlled unit here. Red Alert always had its cut scenes done live action, with a story that had a nice feeling about itself, and was not afraid to go as far as denigrating Einstein and creating an alternate reality. Rise of Nations having no story, but the actual events of history, does not have a story besides what history has made it. it talks about real battles that have happened, and you playing out campaigns based on Alexander the Great, Napoleon, and the Cold War. It's a game you can learn from, a little bit. Starcraft sets the universe as your stage with the clever idea of humans, or Terrans creating a different species they would use for war. THe Zerg. the great Protoss empire gets wound up in the whole thing and the story plays itself out. Im done, I dont feel like talking anymore.
In conclusion, Red Alert fucking rocks, Rise of Nations also rocks, but in a way of taking thins to the other end of the extremity spectrum. I got bored of Starcraft long ago, its an ehh game.
KIROVS for teh win.

On the topic of RA3 i have not bought it mainly because i played the beta and did not like the resource system i prefer the original way like in RA2 and C&C3 not like generals(which i will never call a C&C game because they pretty ripped off starcraft and put C&C on the title and for me a C&C game should have MCV and not builders). I liked some of the ideas the games has and i really like how each side has its own feel and play styles. If i were offed this game as a gift i would happily accept it and defend the game, but buy it with my own money... no.

On the topic of DRM i find it really funny how just a few years ago it wasn't that big of deal. We fould a new topic as powerful as politics...sort of. Granted i do feel there needs to be some kind of defense against piracy and i have no problem with SecuROM because It probably does say that it will be installed AS A SEPARATE PROGRAM in the EULA. Do i know this for sure, no but i can take a guess and say that it is in there.

RA3 might be nice, who knows. Let's not count our chickens before they're hatched. :) Didn't much like RA2 myself, preferred RA1. Generals was another staple of mine until Act of War one-upped it (IMO.)

Maybe i am just not much of a RTS player but i love C&C and i would take it over any other RTS game.

I played most of the other RTS games mentioned in this thread and I didn't think i got even close to the fun i had and have with C&C. except for maybe total anhiliation and supreme commander those are great games but still not as much pure addictive fun as C&C.

I skimmed over this thread.

I don't think any realtime strategies to date have been perticularly 'realistic', but that's not stopped them from being quite fun (despite the fact I am doomed to suck at every bloody one). If you want realism, it seems like Tom Clancy's Endwar is probably your best bet. Outside of that, Company of Heroes? Leaving RTS for turn based, Combat Mission is probably the most accurate WW2 strategy game.

Wasn't the original C&C the first realtime strategy, even before Warcraft 1?

The series kinda peaked with Red Alert, but I haven't found much fun in its sequels, despite giving them all a try.

My money is on Starcraft 2 and Dawn of War 2, personally.
I dont know if C&C was the First rts ever but its certainly was the first to come out to really stick with people. And Dawn of War 2 is most likely going to be the only RTS i will buy for a while. I never really was a starcraft fan. You have two difficulties on that game Hard and Damn Hard so its tough for beginners to pick it up. and once you get online its always the same rushes Zurg(Zurglings or the flying Units) Protoss(aircraft carrier 95% of the time) and Terain(Whatever they feel like). you just get sense that rushes are all you can do in the game unlike in C$C 3 they tried to make nod a stealthy sneak tactics side but if failed.

RA3 has magical school girls and giant mecha. As an anime fan, I was convinced by the intro cutscene that I was going to enjoy the fluff. The over the top breasts that are everywhere were a little bit disturbing. First campaign cutscene for the Soviets just confused me when they brought in Comrade Boobies (that's her name) to say "Yeah, we've gotta go push the Empire back." and...that was it. She just sat there kinda...half nodding her head and smiling and fidgeting.

I think you'll find that's "Zerg". FOR THE SWARM MO'FOS!

RA3 could have been the best game ever, if the developers were not completely retarded! Even the unit details could be greatly improved. Game play doesn't seem to be the most important thing anymore these days, this goes for the console games too.

If Starcraft 2 fails then the RTS genre is officially dead!

..... At what point did an alien invading plant, a single engineer taking over buildings, and ion cannons become realistic?

Ok, the series has become more stylistic over time, but I actually prefer style over grey-brown realism these days - I always have to wonder why developers think the world is purely grey-brown ;).

Meh, if Starcraft 2 AND Dawn of War 2 fails, I'd say it's 'officially' gone the way of point and click adventures (dearly missed - screw LucasArts, etc)

But I do think StarCraft 2 (in the more 'tradional' RTS style) and Dawn of War 2 (in the more 'Ground Control' limited resources style) will both be good - CnC has been going down 'meh' hill for awhile now, so I wasn't expecting great things.

EDIT: Editted the paragraph above alittle

Also, EndWar, whilst not perfect, does sound reasonable ( haven't got it so can't decide)
