Before people say it is personal taste and everyone has a right to an opinion, I'm curious to know why people hail it as the best zelda ever. Why is it so special?

Well. I like it the most (although I loved Ocarina, Wind Waker etc and I'm sure I'll love Skyward Sword) because the world of Termina has a much creepier feel to it, with a moon thats always there, slowly getting closer and closer, ready to destroy everything while throughout your adventure you're totally powerless to stop it (until the end naturally) forcing you to keep replaying the same 3 days, Groundhog Day style to delay the inevitable

I don't know.
The entire game was side quests, with a stupid time limitation gimmick that didn't really add anything other than tedious-ness to the game for me.

Nostalgia. Ocarina of time is the best zelda game from an innovation standpoint but Majoria's Mask was more polished so when you played it as a kid you thought it was better than ocarina of time but it's hard to think of a game that did more for 3-D games so you call Majoria's Mask the Best Game Ever because it was better than Ocarina of time.
At least that's my take on what you said (It's my favorite zelda game still) but I've NEVER heard anyone else like it more than OoT.
EDIT: you you meant Ocarina of Time (since THAT is the one most people praise) it is a combination of Nostalgia and that the game felt perfect when it was released and still holds up well today and as a milestone in adventure games and game mechanics in general.

I wouldn't say it's the BEST zelda game, but it's certainly in my top 3. Why? Well because it took all the greatness of ocarina and gave it a massive twist on the gameplay. Sure it was repetitive with the 3 day timeline but for me that's also one of it's perks. You had characters who followed a path, a timeline throughout those three days and interacting with them was always a pleasure.

Plus, you got to finally be a Deku, a Zora and a Goron, I mean come on..that's pretty awesome.
And let's not forget that they included the game spanning quest to gain Fierce Deity Link, THE single best interpretation of an edgy Link ever.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
For me its tied with twilight princess as the best, it had a really interesting story, it was cool to see people in a world that actually did more then just stand around, the repetition did hurt it but not enough for it not to be completely awesome, everything just meshed really well in it.

For me it is one of the few zelda's i never finished(and i played almost all).

The people that like it the most probably like because the town had a real feel to it, the 3 day cycle (while really repetitive) did give a fresh twist to the game. Well less pressure when you learn the song of time.

It is also indeed a bit of personal taste. I have seen a lot of different zelda's been named the best by people(though i believe zelda II is disliked by the most people)

Do they? I never got far since I despise games with time pressure.
I always hear praise over Ocarina of Time though, which I kind of agree on. Not really a Zelda fan, but I really liked that game.

Obviously, as you said it a lot of it is just subjective, different strokes for different folks and what-not.
Ocarina of Time is still primarily seen by the largest portion of fans out there as the best Zelda game.

That said, Wind Waker is my personal favorite- but I do think Majora's Mask was the best game of the series. Did the most of having a consistent theme of healing, as well as what wounded the world around it. With this came a more mature atmosphere around you, while keeping that sort of classic adventure status. The time limit, combined with the moon above you at all times (except dungeons) instilled this sense of foreboding doom and it genuinely unnerved me- knowing it was there the other time. Overall felt much more like an old dark fairy tale. Something that appeals to kids and the young at heart but doesn't really pander to them, coddling them with things theyre supposed to be too young to understand. Or at least, that's how I felt when I was 12-13 and playing it.

On top of that, kept all the visual elements that made Ocarina of Time great, improving on many and had the intuitive system of masks that both physically and metaphorically 'masked' Link, allowing him new abilities or entirely different attributes, what with the Deku Scrub, Goron and Zora masks.

Just a great sequel, a direct sequel too, I might add.

I've never seen anyone claim that MM is the best Zelda ever but maybe it's because it was a huge departure in the series. It has a compelling antagonist, deep characters and it's pretty dark and twisted for a Zelda game. Also changing Link in to different forms is pretty cool.

I was 99% sure that it was Ocarina of Time for N64 that was hailed as the greatest of all Zelda games, and often listed as one of the best video games of all time.

Funny you should say Majora's Mask, I've always been shouted at by the people who say A Link to the Past is the best one (but I can't even beat it!).

I think it's because at the time it was a huge departure from the overall feel of the series. Sure the other games had their eerie moments (OOT's Shadow Temple for eg.) but Marjora's Mask was decidedly dark and actually kind of disturbing at parts (if you're, you know, 8 or 12 or so like I was when it came out). It also did something unique with the time-limited gameplay; a pain in the ass but definitely different.

I wouldn't say it's THE best, I have no opinion since I enjoyed all the 3D/newer games equally, but it was definitely different.

Well, Majora's Mask had a lot more side stuff to do? Some players might prefer collecting masks and going on various quests and missions to the standard dungeon setting. I know I did. I got more enjoyment out of trying to collect every mask as apposed to beating every dungeon and killing every Skulltula.

It was my favorite Zelda game... however, I believe Windwaker has taken the #1 spot for me.

It's the only Zelda game where you can completely replay most parts of the game when you want, without restarting.

The different 'forms' of Link were fun.

Tons of sidequests.

But mostly, it's the replayability. Beats OoT in my book.

Time travel as a theme is very rarely done well in video games. Only Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Chrono Trigger really pulled it off.
