Can someone inform me on why Zelda's great?

Maybe I should just get different friends, but all of my friends love the Zelda series. Infact of those friends thinks the Zelda series is the best ever and refuses to admit any of the games were bad as a whole and makes excuses for the few mistakes that he's willing to admit.

I think I've played 3 Zelda games... Twilight Princess for the Wii, THe Phantom Hourglass for the DS, and I can't quiet remeber the one I played on a Gameboy.

I didn't find the games very fun. I did find them rather tidious, from running back and forth and back into and out of dungeons to long boss fights where you just stood just out of range and attempted to find a better solution to the battle than shooting it full of arrows or making the boss eat sword....

So, can someone tell me some of the points to why Zelda's great? Is it like the fact it was the first series to do _______? Or is there genuinly something fun about it?

I already know that. It's not like I intend to have a bunch of people run up to me and present me with why the game is fun with points A, B, and C validating it and then go buy myself a copy. I just want to see why other people think it's so fun since my friends think saying "It's Zeeeeeeeeeeeelda!" is enough of a reason.

For some people it's nostalgia talking. For others they find the gameplay to be extremely fun and very few games have similar gameplay (as far as I know) so they have nothing to compare it to / replace it.

I honestly can't give you an answer, back when I played the SNES one and the N64 they were something new and interesting. Puzzles, a bunch of secrets and side things to do, epic boss fights. But the games after just felt really similar and I personally don't find the games so great anymore. Are they good? Yes. Great? To me the answer is unfortunately no.

It has some cool lore, the universe is pretty cool, you get an awesome pony. I think Zelda is a pretty cool guy. Eh, kills stalfos and doesn't afraid of anything.

Thats what did it for me. Being able to play as Link, who you mold from a child into a bad ass in your own unique way, and the music is very touching.


And no the whole song isnt that long, its only about 1:30 at most

OT: I find it fun because I like the style of gameplay. Exploration, puzzle-solving, and the boss battles feel satisfying for me. However, I started with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and only Wind Waker and Link to the Past managed to keep on par with OoT and MM, so I've just avoided the newer ones. (Including both DS games. The control schemes are horrrrible)

TL;DR: Zelda's style of doing dungeon exploring and boss fights got it right for most of the people who love the series.

I suppose it's not for everyone. Ocarina of time was the first adventure game I ever played so immersing myself into the zelda world takes me to a place where my imagination can run wild and anything is possible. the beautiful music, challenging puzzles, majestic scenery and creative bosses will leave you with a desire to see what happens next and the whole experience just make me want to create as well as appreciate the world around me.

Yeah, this is a hard one to explain. It really comes down to the core gameplay just being so damn fun. It's kind of like trying to explain why the 2D Mario games are so much fun. They just are. Zelda also had the good fortune of making a very good transition to 3D, which killed a lot of classic franchises (or should have... I'm looking at you, Sonic).

I'd say that the best ones to play to determine if you like the series or not are A Link to the Past (2D Zelda at its peak, IMO), and Ocarina of Time (I greatly enjoy Windwaker, but admit that the sailing could get tedious). If you dislike both of those for any reason other than graphics, then the Zelda series just isn't for you.

You've played three Zelda games. That's more than enough to get the gist of what the games offer. In a nutshell, everything you've seen is the reason why. The questing, the backtracking, the swordplay, the pseudo-medieval atmosphere, the puzzles... These are the reasons why Zelda's great in the opinion of some players.

If you'eve experienced all of that three times now, it seems likely to me that you simply don't enjoy Zelda games. It isn't the end of the world. I don't like the Mass Effect games, but I've never struggled to understand why.

Im not a huge fan of the Zelda series either, my boyfriend and i have arguments over Zelda vs Final fantasy all the time.
But i can give you the good points, Zeldas gameplay is all about puzzle solving and collecting the various weapons/items hidden through out the games world. It is one of the original 'quest' games, and it would be one of the first games that immersed your friends in completely.

on another note, Twilight Princess bored me to tears, it was VERY drawn out... If you're looking for a reason to like Zelda, try and grab yourself a copy of 'Ocarina of Time' regarded as one of the best games of all time.

Really I could talk about Zelda till I'm blue in the face, but really it all comes down to either you enjoy it or you don't and no amount of blabbing from me is likely to change that.
Although I will say that Phantom Hourglass and I'm guessing the other one you're referring to is Link's Awakening (the gameboy one) are not the greatest entries in the series. Although others will argue with me regarding Link's Awakening. Better entries would probably be Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask although for those you'd have to forgive the N64 era graphics, and Link to the Past, but again you've got to forgive dated graphics.
However I will warn you now, the formula is pretty much as you described it, decide for yourself whether or not the story makes it worth while. Also, Zelda practically invented the Fetch Quest so if you don't enjoy fetch quests, you'll never enjoy Zelda.

Ok, you don't like it, fair enough, but can you name one well made game that's similar to it in more than one aspect? Probably not (though someone on this forum probably will because there's likely to be one or two games nobody has ever heard of.)

But anyways, that's why other people like it and you don't, it's because there's pretty much nothing else like it, so people who like Zelda hold it in higher regard because it's one of the only and definitely the best of its kind.

Also, even as a fan of the series, I thought phantom hourglass was terrible and TP was meh so... I dunno.
