Can someone please explain to me why PC gamers and Console gamers can't get along?

People don't care but alot sure do love to argue about anything and it's a good topic as it's got clearly definded sides. Vocal minorities can very quickly blow things out of proprotion.

This is probably a pretty accurate summary of the origin of the hate wars.

Personally, I think the origin of that origin, goes along the same line as the reason for why my family are pro-Playstation rather than XboX (We've been using some Nintendo gaming devices since the GBC): Money.
Our parents couldn't afford both a Playstation and a N64, so they chose what they believed to be the best of the two. And we decided to stick with the Playstation when a new console came out with the next generation(more than one console was still out of the question).

We were, however, able to afford PC's that could keep up with most PC games. I don't want to say money is the root to all these problems, because I can easily see how parent's buy their kids a console, and then simply don't see the need to buy and keep up with powerful PC's. The parents don't game, and don't see why the kids would need a PC for gaming if they have a console already.

And finally, when kids grow up and have to pay for their own stuff, they have to make a choice: do you use your limited funds (because most young adults are short on income. For luxuries, at least) to pay for this generation's console, and then buy a low-end pc/laptop for several years (that can't keep up with the latest games). Or spend money on a good PC/laptop, than can keep up with the latest games for several years to come, and end up without enough funds to also add a console to your home.

All these decisions are going to be made based on personal preference, research, and outside advice. And at the end of the day, you are left having to defend why you picked one over the other. They are all good, but cater to different needs/tastes/ideals.

Me? I grew up as a Playstation/PC player, but I'm leaning more towards PC, now that I have to pay for my own stuff (leaning back back to consoles, now that I have access to a PS3 on a quasi-regular basis and my laptop is getting old)

Apart from games being hindered by console tech being low, game devs have been developing games more accustomed to console games. So to put it simple consoles take good pc games away.

It has nothing to do with personal preferences.

I have nothing against console players, but I have something against the conspicuous damage the console market has caused to the gaming industry. Consoles are cheap and faulty devices which slow down technical innovation and makes life hard for us PC gamers. Many titles are now console exclusive and PC gamers get less support. Not to mention that many multi platform games are poorly optimized for the PC.

I don't mind you prefer your Xbox over PC gaming or whatever. I couldn't care less. It's when the console market you are supporting is directly hurting me and PC gaming the problem arises.

As it's been said both sides have benefits but I find console only gamers to be much worse than PC gamers.
Basically this explains everything sadly

"the wii is innovative!" "motion controls suck!" "360 has the best online games!" "thats if you want some RROD." "PS3 has the best games period!" "the PS3 has games?" "PC owns all your shit cry moar console kiddies." "shut the fuck up you PC elitist fuck"

after that the ranting goes on and on.

I really hate when I check to see if a pc game uses the 360 controller and I go to a forum and all the responses I see are: Why would you do that, kb and mouse is way better, youll get pwnd in multiplayer, etc. Why can't I just prefer a controller. I've been playing with a controller for all my gaming life and outside of games like Dragon Age and Kotor, I can't keep up with all the keys. I also don't play online and I've tried my best with TF2 for about 5 hours of playtime using the mouse and kb but I can't get it, I give up *rage quits*

Because people turn the fact that it's difficult financially to keep up with multiple platforms into some sort of holy war.

Personally, I prefer PC gaming - but I've got a PS3 that I like as well. Eventually, I'll probably replace my 360 too. Given a choice of one and one only, it's going to be the PC.

99% can. The co-exist in harmony with fewer problems then the occasional thoughtless but benign-intentioned crack about ports, hardware, or games lineup. The other 1% are...loud. Very,...VERY loud.

CONSOLE FANBOYS STARTED IT! <------ that's why. It's because we try to shove our massive towers down their throats and won't accept the fact that maybe they just like the controllers and auto-aim maybe they want to be with their friends who play on console maybe they don't want to buy a bulky $2000 gaming PC. If we all stopped hating and started lov- screw this PC FTW trollolololol

Well, I can see the bad influence consoles have on PC gaming, but since I've owned both pretty much as far back as I can remember, the argument seems kind of moot to me.
Bullshit. How does the negative influence PC games have on consoles not count for just as much? The regression of Splitscreen multiplayer is blood on the PC's hands.
No, the introduction of advanced networking onto consoles caused that...

When devs realised they could network consoles together, that caused them to stop making an effort to deal with split-screen gaming. (Notice how the console with the worst networking features has the highest proportion of split-screen or local multiplayer games?)

Just because the PC had network gaming 10 years before that doesn't mean PC's are at fault for that.

(And PC's had next to no local multiplayer gaming. It was either no multiplayer at all, or network based. I played Doom on a LAN in 1994... But are you seriously going to blame that on game consoles in 2005 no longer having split-screen games?
Or is Xbox live the fault of PC's too?)

Anyway, even if that's true, look at what consoles have done to PC's in that timeframe:

-Badly optimized graphics that underuse the PC's capabilities.
-Control schemes that don't work properly on PC.
-Gradual removal of networking features from PC games. (LAN support - almost gone; Local -instanced multiplayer from a single disk - gone; Dedicated server support - on it's way out;)
-Reduced complexity in games. (because console input devices can't handle them, and the genres that had that kind of complexity were only ever really popular on PC to begin with.)
- More and more insane DRM
- Loss of demos. (seriously, how many times in recent memory have I seen a game that has demos... Oh, but not for the PC version. Sorry. - Which probably needs it the most, considering the compatibility issues...)
- Reduction in the amount of patching & new features games used to get for free...
- Loss of games that would in the past have had PC versions, but now don't...

I could go on and on with this. And some (or even many) of these complaints would be quite ridiculous - especially in regard to specifically blaming them on consoles, but you had all of one counterpoint (to an aspect of what I said which I consider relatively unimportant), and it wasn't even a good one, if you're trying to blame PC's for stuff...
this guy is pretty much spot on... if one manages to take into account the facet that devs have taken away original products designed for the pc and made them console only is another deathblow. it's like if the Nintendo corporation said to all wii, gamecube etc owners to bad Sonic will now only be made for the xbox360 so we can make more $

Maybe they stopped putting the dedicated server support in for business reasons? Nah, its purely CONSOLES FAULT.
Wait what? Removing dedicated servers is a business choice?

Not allowing the thousands (or millions depending on the game) to host their own servers, which do not cost you money, and grant your game an unlimited lifespan (if the player base allows it), but instead tunneling them all through your own servers, which cost you money, is a business choice? That is just throwing away money.

No, the lack of dedicated servers is developers coping with the fact that consoles don't have the processing power to host the entire server and keep gameplay at a playable level while doing so. The multiplatform releases which lose dedicated servers on PC are because they are too lazy to add something extra to just one version of the game.

I've always seen it as more of an 360 v PS3 thing with PC gamers being elitist snobs in the background.

As a PC gamer, I have nothing against console gamers. Do I think consoles are the inferior machines and that game companies can go get screwed for releasing crappy console ports on PC (or worse, releasing console exclusives)? Yes, of course I do. But I have nothing against the gamers themselves.

Because gamers are insecure and need to try and prove how much better they are? Because they're assholes who like to fight about completely arbitrary differences? Because it's the Internet and people are just pricks like that? Because people like to jump on bandwagons and PC vs. Console is a giant bandwagon? Pick a reason and run with it.

And is the lack of local multiplayer devs dealing with the fact that PC's simply are incapable of having local multiplayer capabilities and not thinking it worth it for the console versions? No, because derpy derpy double standard herp a derp consoles are inferior.

Oh, and absolutely stellar job of oversimplifying and retarding the issue around dedicated servers. Really top notch. The issue is completely unrecognisable and divorced from the reality of the situation.
This was back in December 2009.

PCs don't have any such issues.

What seems more likely is that multiplayer shifted from local play to online multiplayer through things such as Xbox Live and the PSN.

Also I am curious how I oversimplified the issue by stating simple, logical facts while you were suggesting something illogical to the point of being idiotic.

But go on making idiotic complaints as you usually do, hopefully you won't need to fabricate statistics as usual.

I play some games on console and others on PC.. I don't see the big deal. It's sometimes a pain in the ass to choose between the two but most of the time one is clearly better than the other. As far as why the people who play on consoles don't like those who play on PC and vice versa well..

.. people are dicks.

Short answer: Fanboys.

Long answer: Fanboys develop an irrational level of attachment to the object of their fandom, whatever that may be, and this compels them to bash the "competition," whatever that may be. This isn't exclusive to PC vs. console (see PS3 vs. XB360), or even exclusive to gaming (see politics).

The "us vs. them" mentality is a leftover from our tribal times. Some people have evolved past it and are capable of being civil and rational, even among people with strongly different opinions than them, as long as those people are also civil and rational in return.

However, those who are still stuck in this primitive mindset tend to be the loudest, the trolls, and the ones who give their respective groups a bad name.

Such is humanity, and such is life.

Um, no? Look at Portal 2, the only big name PC to Console port I can think of from the past year. Plenty of split screen there.
