Can someone please tell me why Half-Life 2 has such appeal?

Because it's the 1984 of videogames.

Everybody loves 1984.
Haha. I always said that HL2 was 1984 but with aliens.

But to answer the question: A lot of people like well-paced, fun games. I don't know what else to say.

See, I only get about half of those. I will admit that the atmosphere was brilliant, and there was quite some attention to detail (which they actually used as a storytelling technique). And Ravenholm was terrifying, which I assume has something to do with your "suspense" point. But I didn't notice a plot at all, and it was rather limited in imagination ("hey, let's get 1984 and insert aliens and zombies! WE'RE SO ORIGINAL"). The engine's graphics aged well, especially the water effects, and the physics were good - though I do recall that Halo 2 had a similarly good physics engine, it's just that it didn't wank in it like HL2 did with its (somewhat diverting) physics puzzles. Then again, I was only able to play through half of it before having to stop (as I have had to explain many times, I will finish it one day, but can't right now... it's complicated)... but really, "it's great so long as you ignore the entire first half" has never been a good argument.

It is not bad. It's somewhat enjoyable. But... for me it just gets held up too highly.
i see where your comming from but compared to some titles for eg halo which is far more over rated then any other game in exsistance (iv finnished 1-odst)where as iv finnished all current half-life titles and feel like everything is far more thought through and alot more effort was put into everything you and i have mentioned before you continue to make a judgement plese finnish the game first includeing the current eps then comment, cheers

and by adding halo i in no way want to start a flame war it was only and example as i have finnished it

I've wondered this myself for a while. I played Half-Life 2, sure it was decent but except for the fact that it's a bit older and thus probably did a thing or two right first, it just doesn't seem that interesting. Deus Ex was good back then and still is, because it still has so many things that you just don't find in today's games.

Because the story isnt as shallow as "Your a soldier, heres a gun, go commit possible war crimes"
Yes, but some could see it as "your a scientist, here's a crowbar, go commit xenocide."

OT: I've never really understood the concept behind these "convince me" threads, you already don't like the game or just thinks it's average, anything I say in it's defense you've already heard hundreds of times before and dismissed them as fanboy ravings. Anything I say will not magically persuade you into liking the game or think of it in a different light so I'll just - *clicks topic index button*

That's the thing, I actually prefer Halo to Half-Life (don't worry, I won't get out my flamethrower, it's out of petrol and rusting at the moment anyway). Largely due to the gameplay (especially the enemy AI). But I also find it feels more polished and that Bungie have put loads of effort into it, which really brings home just how subjective this all is.

It's made by Valve so any argument get's ripped to fucking shreds by their fanboys. I personally played Half-Life 2, didn't finish it and I really didn't want to. I really couldn't give a rats-ass if Half-Life 3 comes out.

Because opinions exist?

I like how the gameplay feels solid, and the physics and that I don't have to purely be shooting all the time, and puzzles, and it's a decent length so replay lasts.

Same here, I mean its a decent shooter, definitely a better campaign than most shooters today but I think as more and more people jump and the bandwagon it gets moree and more hyped until it can never live up to it, I mean the plot wasn't particularly great the environments where nice and the gameplay was generic, playing around with physics was alright but got boring quickly I think its mostly due to valve being loved by pc elitists

I usually hate people who say "Not This Thread Again".... But for the first time I kinda see their point.

It's a game thats got more than solid shooting mechanics, a fine length, a story many people enjoy with great characters (The test I use is "Can I remember all of their names when i'm done', which a lot of games fail) and great atmosphere.

It's the same as any piece of media, if it pulls you in you will enjoy it, if you don't, there is no reason you can give that will make sense to the other person.

I enjoy zombie panic which is a mod for it.
Also half-life was a good shooter by itself and added the extra entertainment of an adventure game. Like system's shock but less annoying since you don't have to upgrade your crowbar using skill to use it effectively.
Half-life 2 is not so much more of it since in half life 1 your in a building complex trying to stop the invading aliens but in half-life two your in a post-invaded world and you must free humanity. The reason i think why everyone likes the episodes is because they want closure to the whole thing.
Keep in mind it's also because half-life will always be a good shooter and adventure game to me and unlike modern warfare messing up in half life will never be hair pullingly frustrating.

Half life 2 came out what 7 years ago now? When it first came out, the graphics were amazing and it had some pretty cool unique-ish stuff in it, with an above average story for an FPS. And of course it still holds a dear place in the hearts of those of us who played it early in its life.

Meh, it's good as a shooter, but I don't know why there are so many people who defend it like others defend Halo. Yeah Half-Life 2 was good, but too many things about it pissed me off for me to say "OMFG THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER!"

I am not a big fan of the Half-Life series and I think this is mostly because I played Half-Life 1 way too late. I also hate jumping puzzles in FPSs. The fact that Half-Life 1 had jumping puzzles and was dated looking made me uninterested. However, I did play Half-Life 2 fairly close to its release day and want to ask this question: What's the lasting appeal of this game? As a shooter it's alright, but to me the dicking around while not shooting ruins it. Not that I need guns blazing 24/7, I really enjoyed Amnesia for example, but I just don't get why people are so excited for Episode 3 when Episode 0 left me no reason to keep following the story.

If anyone can tell me what they liked about it that made it different from other games of the genre, then please let me know. Likewise, if you just love Valve that's a fair answer too.
i agree with you. its overhyped to the max. i love the characters but the gameplay... well after killing the same enemy in the same way for the thousandth time after doing the same physics puzzle with the seesaw and boxes id had enough.

Because it was cutting edge when it was released.

Go play Goldeneye on the N64, DOOM, the first Half-Life.

They were also cutting-edge or revolutionary.

But they haven't aged well.

...Wait.

DOOM has.

RIP AND TEAR.

Nope. Some people have to prove that people need to like things according to their logic.
