Can we please stop with the Portal "tributes"?

I just found out today that Fable 3 has one, too. Jesus Christ, I think Portal deserves a World Record for being referenced by the most unrelated titles in a medium.

I would like to know when this occurs, because I've almost beat the game, and have yet to encounter it.

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised or care that it is there. That is one of the things Fable does, it takes references from other well known things and uses them for comedic effect. Take the Achievement for finding all the keys in the game, I think it is called something like, "I am the Key Master."

Personally, I didn't actually find Portal to be that great (I shall now wait for a Valve fanboy to attempt to crucify me for my blasphemy), as a result, my reaction to Portal references tend to be an almighty 'meh'.

It's just another attempt at 'gamer humour', some jokes are funny and some are better off being forgotten about and never being mentioned again.

People quote it even if they've never even heard of the game. Surely they must get a medal for this.

REPENT!

Just kidding, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

But Portal references have long gone beyond the point of being funny. People on the internet I can understand, but putting Portal jokes in completely unrelated games is a very lame idea.

Its around the time you become King and all (not a spoiler, because its more or less on the back of the box), here, I'll let Achievement Hunter do the talking.

I remember seeing a show about this and it only works the one way. Sadly I forgot which.

At any rate I think Yahtzee described it best in his recent Castlevania review.

As for where the reference is: "During the Hideout mission of bowerstone when going to capture Nigel Ferret. You will come across a room with a silver key. At the far end of the room there is a path around the boxes to the other jail cell. In the cell is a hobbe worshiping the companion cube from portal and on the table next to the cell is a cake." - GameFAQs

EDIT: Ninja'd.

Okay, sorry. Don't know how I quoted myself without saying anything. I guess I did it by accident when I was trying to edit my post.

Palm please, also, can I skip all that crap about drinking vinegar to make me dehydrate faster?

Failing that, go with the spear in my side option (who knows, maybe you guys can make a profit selling bits of me as relics?).

Thanks, I guess I haven't found it in game, so I will use the video to find it. Game-wise I just need to do a few more kingly deeds, find the diamond and all that, get enough guild seals to get all the chests open on the Road to Rule, let my money build up so I can get good-good ending, instead of a good-tragic ending. I actually got the money already, I had to leave the game on with my guy walking into a corner of the interior of the castle and put a book on the control left stick to keep him moving into the wall so that the 360 wouldn't put the thing into hibernate while I was away. In about 8 hours, I had 15 million from property rent and income.

I've never actually played a game with a Portal reference so I guess it doesn't bother me.

at least Portal's seems like an appropriate tribute to a studio that the Fable developers must respect. The Castlevania reference is moronic, but Lionhead clearly just wanted to give Valve mad props.

People want to pay homage to a pretty decent puzzle game. Doesn't bother me. To be fair, I was surprised how much Yahtzee moaned about it in the latest review

I enjoyed Portal the first few times and I thought the jokes were funny then...
A long while later and it's kinda like watching Lee Evans (or any comedian) on repeat. It just loses any or all of it's humor.

I'm not surprised it's in Fable, and if I had the game (not been paid yet, boo!) I'd probably have gone "Oh. Cool." And that would have been the extent. It certainly wouldn't have been "Oooooooh look what they've done, HILARIOUS! I must tell my friends".

But I guess that's me ^^

Well, after seeing the gun that shoots orange and blue portals in that one game and the cake in Splosion Man, I can imagine getting tired of it. It serves no purpose other than to point out the existence of one of the rare games that came out in the last decade that didn't suck.

And have you noticed how all the games that reference it aren't that good with Splosion Man being a slight exception?

It just shows how deeply ingrained Portal has become on the public consciousness. People who have never played the game, but frequent the internet, will likely know all the jokes. Even people who've never heard of it have probably heard references, even if they didn't get them.

Personally, it doesn't bother me. Why should it? Sometimes things reference other things, it doesn't matter. As long as the thing doing the referencing is strong enough to stand up on it's own, and isn't propping up it's own inadequacies by making constant references to more popular stuff (I'm glaring at you here, Scary/Epic/Date/Superhero/Garbageman/Hippopotamus/Trench-foot Movie!), then it's just a little bit of fun for those who are in on the joke.

Don't think I've played any of them to be fair. The missus has Fable 3 and likes it, but I haven't got round to any of them yet. Splosion Man might be next on my list...

The best part of Fable 3 is the intro movie and Splosion Man is just one step above the Poke The Bunny game in my book.
