Normally, i can modify my attention very easily and do it frequently. There are however some kinds of things that i cannot tune out and which disrupt my attention unless i get away from them - screaming children, loud music from headphones in an otherwise quiet environment, booming bass from music, etc. It all depends on how much it "sticks out" from the rest of the environment sounds.

Something that can make "tuning out" make more difficult to me, is that i not only have rather "detailed" hearing, but also "hear" with the rest of my body. That is, i notice vibration caused by sounds, where others don't notice it.

No. It looks like I'm the exception, but I can't be unaware of what's going on around me. I need to know, always. It gets annoying. I can't study at school because even the presence of other people is distracting. But at least I won't ignore you if I'm writing an intensive program in C and you ask me how to write the program in C... I will, however, be a little annoyed.

Well... I've been working on an epic in my head for many years now, and in doing so, I've learned to tune out everything around me so much that I can not at all remember what happend today... other than what was going on through my head...

I only do this on weekdays...

I can tune out teachers who bore me in history- I can tune people out but I can't stop thinking, in order to tuenn someone out I need to think of something like a book/movie idea in full detail so it's first person.

Yeah, humans have this amazing thing called "attention" which consciously and sub-consciously filters out sensory information. It's pretty sweet.
Unfortunately mine seems to be a bit on the blink. I often need someone to repeat an instruction because I've zoned out of it by accident, and if someone says hello or me or something I usually manage not to notice.
However it does mean that unless something's bothering me and I have something better to concentrate on, I'm pretty good at travelling off into another world and... usually end up with my eyes at the level of someone's chest while I'm out of the physical world. Whoops. And sometimes it happens for half an hour in class and I fail to notice. But I've managed to pretend someone doesn't exist pretty well before. More than once. It's fun.

I'm sorry I wasn't listening to you....

OT: Yes. I can do this with almost any annoyance in my life. I used to work for a Movie Theater that had a DDR arcade machine that would loop 5-6 song bits together that seemed to drive my co-workers insane. I just tuned it out and only heard it if someone started complaining about it, at which point I'd say "Damn I didn't even notice it" and resume tuning it out.

Its actually something iv found only guys are able to do.
Same. I most of the girls I know can "zone-out" but they are always thinking of something else.
Now, I myself, do it all the time in math. I'd sit there looking at the board and when my friend finally taps me on shoulder then I notice that the teacher is done and she is now sitting behind me at my desk. I love being able to do that.

By this I mean ignoring sounds and just going into your own little world. Sometimes this can include thought, and sometimes it doesn't. When I've asked people about it, I've found that only guys can fully tune things out, that is, stare at something and have no thoughts. This might not be accurate, but it's what I've found. What about the Escapist? Can you tune things out?
Yep, I've been known to just stare off into space and think about nothing for upwards of an hour or two.

Dunno if that has to do with my being male or not, but I sometimes enjoy it in a blank and boring way.

I can tune out background noise quite easily. Like I'm one of those people that can study in the middle of a loud, busy food court. What really throws me off is silence, because every little occasional sound distracts me.

I hardly hear the sound of music playing at my work anymore. Then again they play Electric Slide for some reason so I think it's a self preservation thing.

In certain situations, I can do that, yes.
Situations like that includes EVERY TIME my stupid, completely antisocial, friendless and annoying cousin of mine talks. I just go into a coma while being awake and staring at the wall.

I'm a guy, but when I zone out (and I do constantly) I'm in really, really deep thought, and normally I'll stare at something and just linger on it. Which gets me really weird stares from girls..

Lol, i have 4 younger sisters, so long car trips or even being at home when they are all at home present great opportunity to use that gift.
