The Last Remnant is a decent game but it is not like Golden Age Final Fantasy. In Final Fantasy you direct your characters individually but in The Last Remnant you give groups orders and the AI chooses the attack it wants to use.
Golden Age can refer to any part of the FF series.

Oh dear god, that game! I think its the only JRPG I have played that I have actually didnt finsih because it was so bad. I just could not find anything redeeming about it I gave up after finally getting back your sister about 50 or 60 hours in I couldnt take anymore and I have finished trash like FFII and Blue Dragon.
Well there aren't many JRPGs on PC so we gotta take what we can get:p

Vindictus is pretty fun. The instances can get a bit repetitive, but the combat is solid. And it's free-to-play which always helps.

The only RPGs I can think of without end, are Diablo II & III, Torchlight I & II and the like. There is another one in development which may be of interest to the OP called "Path of Exile [http://www.pathofexile.com/]". It uses an isometric view, has a very deep (and complex looking!) skill/ability system and various online features. It seems to come from the same family as Sacred, Diablo, etc so may be worth looking into.

i second this appeal, vindictus is a great game and has way better combat than guild wars 2 or tera, came out before those games as well which just makes it even more impressive, hell i have spent at least 4 night gibbs on this game alone.

if not that the fallout series is always good.

Lots of great suggestions, although unfortunately I already own most of the games mentioned. There's a few that I don't though:

I actually played Tera for quite a while (was considering going back next month when it goes free-to-play), how would you say the combat is better? Or the rest of the game, for that matter?

Mount and Blade. You are a lowly soldier. Build up a band of followers. Impale brigands and norsemen on the point of your lance. Get the attention of a King and get him to make you a knight. Impale his enemies on the point of your lance. Level up. Outfit your own little army, and begin sieging castles. Maybe you will become strong enough and rich enough to own your own estates and make money off of them, but I doubt it. It takes a long ass time to do that.

Btw, use a lance. It is so satisfying
Get warband, not fire and sword. Guns totally ruin the game.
Forgot about this, but I played M&B Warband a lot, but that was a long time ago. What's changed in the past year, and what are the best mods nowadays? Might pick it up again.

If anyone has any more suggestions, keep them coming! I appreciate it.

The Last Remnant. Think Golden Age Final Fantasy with a party of around 45... at once.

I just started it and it seems to be your normal 60+ hours RPG. It also runs on UE3 so you can most definitely run it:)
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hadn't heard about that game yet and it seems like a great game to flesh out my RPG collection a bit, it's even on steam sale now. Downloading it now, hoping it's good.

Been ages since I last played a JRPG. Hardly remember it at all beyond it being a FF game that started in a mining town being attacked by steam-powered mecha-suits.

I have several types of games that I like switching to and forth playing now and then, but there's always one RPG which never really ends (or at least, lasts a really, really long time) and I pour endless time into, and still has a sense of progression. This usually takes the form of ARPGs (used to play the original Sacred and Titan Quest) and I've recently started getting into MMORPGs.

I've been playing Guild Wars 2, presuming that I'd be playing it for a long time to come, until I realised that the endgame is rather shallow and lacks a sense of progression, so I couldn't find much more reason to keep playing it past max level. It leaves me kind of stuck and unable to find another RPG that fits the criteria.

So, Escapists, can you think of a 'long term' RPG?

Edit: I should mention that they should be on PC.

This a thousand times. Plus you can always freshen it up with lots of HUGE Mod packs.
I currently play Brytenwalda and it's really good.
I tried Floris Mod Pack, but the bandit armys were just sooooo annoying. They weren't particular hard, but everytime i tried to siege a castle or town an bandit army would attack me and i could spend the next two hourds fighting 20 bandits - battle menu - fighting 20 bandits - battle menu - and so on.
I never lost a single soldier in those battles, but it's bloody annoying and takes a long ass time, when the enemy has about 500 soldiers.
Does anyone know how to disable those bandit armys? i didn't find a way.

That would beeeee... Final Fantasy VI, I believe. At least, over here. I'm not sure which one it would be in Japan, the pre-VII numbering can get really freakin' weird at times.

OT: Well, yeah, Mount and Blade is a pretty decent grab. I always play through a game in its vanilla state before adding mods, so I'm no help there, but I just wanted to cast my vote for it.

And, yeah, TERA, as you mentioned, going free to play. Sounds like you already knew that, but it's a completely open free-to-play, from the sounds of it, with no (or at least very few) content restrictions, so it'd probably be a good time. If you already own it, jumping back in would probably be pretty easy.

Other than that, it's difficult to think of any long-term RPGs on the PC. I can think of old stuff, like Planescape: Torment, or anything that Black Isle or Bioware made in the late 90s/early 2000s, but I can't get more specific than that. Maybe Legend of Grimrock, or Dungeons of Dredmor? Depends on how much you're into dungeon-crawling, but if you've liked ARPGs in the past, you might like them.

Darklands would definitely be one. Also possible the Realms Of Arkania games.

Inquisitor is extremely long and very interesting too but not sure that really counts.

I've only played it for like a hour or so but it seems a lot like FF just on a much larger scale. You will probably enjoy it:) Though it does appear to be incredibly complicated.

I've actually put a lot of hours in The Last Remnant, and it's very good. The main piece of advice is to not be put off by how little help it gives you in terms of the battle system, make sure you read up on it beforehand. If you know the combat system you'll have a blast, but if not, you'll just be frustrated. So stick with it until you learn it and you'll be fine.

Sounding better than expected already.

Was expecting just an average JRPG and getting my main enjoyment simply from the change of pace and setting compared to most standard WRPGs. But I've quite a liking for difficult and challenging combat systems so this might turn out much better.

I had the opposite experience. I played half way through it without paying much attention to the battle rank, loved it. When I did finally read up on it I restarted the game and found it laborious to always be concerned about how I was leveling. It was far more fun not knowing about the punishing BR system. Level scaling is rarely done well.

Had the same experience with Oblivion too, I played through the entire game before I realized that I was "playing it wrong". I loved it the first time but going back to play it again, aware of the level scaling, sucked the fun right out of it.

I don't know, I didn't find the game all that challenging. The game is pretty darn easy (provided you kill everything, if you skip stuff you might have a difficult time), it can just be frustrating at some points (not to mention the mediocre story line). That being said, as far as PC JRPGs go it isn't horrible. It is worth the price of admission right now (with the steam sale) and provided you have the patience, I am sure you will enjoy it.

OT: Suggestions:

-FF VII HD
FF VII HD is out, and it is great if you like FF games especially since they added in all the Japanese content that was missing from the American versions (or haven't ever played FF VII)(If you have beaten FF VII and were bored of it back when it came out, then skip it).

-Secret World
Secret World is an amazing MMO if you enjoy puzzles and cuthulian horror. I've been playing it for a while now and have enjoyed every minute of it. The story is engaging and the side quests are not just go here and kill 10 wolves or collect 10 wolf pelts. They actually ask you to do things, including solving riddles, puzzles, combat, sabotage, stealth, and many more. The leveling system is mostly fun (Don't be fooled, they will tell you there are no levels, but there most definitely are. They are just gear levels).

-Dark Souls
Dark Souls is an A-RPG so I am not sure if that is your cup of tea or not, but it is a great game. Don't let everyone fool you, it isn't as hard as people make it out to be. It is pretty punishing though if you aren't patient. Every move you make needs to be thought out tactically first. Look at every situation as "hmm, how can the game screw me this time" and you will be fine.

-Old School RPGS
You could even go back to some of the oldies but goodies, I'll list some of my favorites;
Baldur's Gate (1 and 2)
Planescape Torment
Neverwinter Nights (1 and 2)
Knights of the Old Republic (1 and 2)
Septera Core
Grandia 2 (this one is JRPG if that is your cup of tea)

I am sure you can find other RPGs that you are interested in on the PC as well. I would recommend looking into the Indy market. There are TONS of amazing RPGs being developed by the Indy crowd as well. I am currently playing a Roguelike RPG called Tales of Maj'eyal and it is amazingly fun, and it is completely free (currently).

well for starters its way faster than tera, id estimate it is atleast twice as fast as tera's combat.

this mainly stems from the fact that despite being action combat tera is still based around using hot keys, mean while in vindictus you rarely use you hotkeys unless you need to use a potion or transform in to something else like a paladin or a death knight.
instead you focus on attacking and doing combo attacks and eventually dodging out of the way, again, in at least double the speed tera does it and without feeling like wow with dodging.

so vindictus is a lot more like devil may cry or any other action rpg mean while tera is more like wow except again with dodging, not bad sure but i personally think vindictus is still better.

although in tera's defence theres no character in vindictus who uses two handed swords so you technically cant be dante yet in the game, you can soon however be a female kratos.

also a character nmed kai is getting a crossbow gun making him even more easy mode than he already was.
