Should Resident Evil be fun to play and a competent shooter, or should it be scary?

Am i the only one who sees a little bias sneaking in here? It seems to have the assumption that the game needs to be unfun to be scary. So, to answer this question, the game needs to be fun period. At which point you need to decide if you are going to create more of a shooter or more of a survival-horror esque game.
Why not both? FEAR managed to be atmospheric.

A new installment? I thought once Wesker died, they'd stop at 5.

Also, scary? Was Resident Evil EVER really scary?

Surprising? Yes. When I was exploring Raccoon PD and a licker burst through an interrogation window at me, I was surprised. Tense? Yes. Whether running through a hallway full of zombies with only half a clip of pistol ammo left or battling your first El Gigante, Resident Evil has done that spectrum of the survival-horror genre well. Gory? When I fought the Village Chief from IV in the warehouse, my brother almost threw up (showed him John Carpenter's "The Thing" later for shits and giggles).

Resident Evil 4 wasn't my first in the RE series, but I genuinely enjoyed it all the same. RE 5, on the other hand, tried to cash in on RE 4's popularity and ended up with a somewhat good action game (co-op only) with hardly any replay value. They cut out focus on level exploration and revisiting old sections, which I loved, and put Albert Wesker (a villain I enjoyed seeing and cheered on every time) to the forefront as some campy over the top villain of the week before killing him off (presumably).

I could just say that as long as RE 6 isn't like RE 5, it'll be ok. But I know better.

The difference is, even the women will get a shitload of steroid inyections. I mean, who doesn't want to see Jill running around with a 10 inch clitoris?

I don't know what was so utterly wrong with RE 1 and 2. People seem to complain so much about those games. They were incredibly fun and I had a real sense of fear-- here I'd finally gotten the Armor key or whatever, and was ready to go through this door, but I have is 8 bullets, no health sprays, one shotgun shell, and a bucketload of apprehension.

Thats awesome.

RE4 was fun, yes.

But the earlier, and especially the redone sections, wasn't so bad.

Why not be both?

It's been done before with other games, why can't Resident Evil go the same way?

Why should they even have to ask? Fun game! Fun game! Sacrificing fun for some self-indulgent air of artiness is just pretentious.

On note of a new Resident evil game, I do hope they make it splitscreen co-op again, that shit was awesome playing through with my GF.
Also things to do: Make it so you can actually fucking walk whilst reloading/meleeing/aiming. I was so amazed that they didn't include it in RE5. I mean what the hell sort of special operative is Chris supposed to be??
I always thought the fact you can't move and shoot was what made RE4 work. Ok, the tank controls were a bit of a pain in some situations (like when a zombie you try to run past slashes you in the face with an axe), but it also added to the effect. While the game wasn't often really scary, the combat gave a sense of dread and tension. You had to run away from the hordes, find a place to make a stand and kill as many as possilbe, then run away again. It gave the feeling you were being overwhelmed by, you know, a pack of zombies.

Plus, have you ever fired a gun? Do you know how hard it would be to aim while moving? You're only hope would be a shotgun at point-blank range (which happens often in RE games, given). Even with an automatic weapon you'd just be spraying bullets all over the place.

Dead Space worked.

Honestly, RE (and almost any Survival Horror) is pretty easy to salvage.
Can't say that about Silent Hill.

So is it going to be "RE4 different" (i.e. something fresh in a stagnant series that actually turned out decent) or "RE5 different" (i.e. something that kicked the fans straight in the groin and smiled while doing it)?

I won't try to claim I'm not biased here. I couldn't stop playing RE4; I stopped playing RE5 about 20 minutes in. If I hadn't gotten the game for under $10 I'd have been seriously pissed.
Actually Resident Evil 5 is very fun if you play split-screen co-op. Though the way the screen is split is quite retarded, but I agree if you're talking single player and compare it to RE4.
RE4 had two bad things about it, and that was Ashley and the graphics in the PS2/PC version.
RE5 had co-op as the thing that made it bearable to play.
If Resident Evil 6 is as fun as Resident Evil 4, that's great, but it should be hard to top. I will probably buy it as soon as it comes out if I got the console it comes out for... Resident Evil 4 got me hooked, and I intend to see the series end once and for all. Hopefully it will be the end at least... Spin-offs will pop up, but I hope nothing will happen after it story-wise.

Maybe. It just felt to me like they had run out of ways to make it scary, so they just handicapped the player.

And yes I have fired a gun before, I'm an avid shooter. Of course you or I couldn't fire anything larger than a pistol whilst moving, but Chris is a huge, specially trained (they go to the lengths of telling you that) apeman, with arms like they've got bowling balls surgically implanted in them, surely he could at least swing his little machete whilst trudging backwards slowly. If anything I always thought having a really slow gait whilst moving backwards and shooting (do you move in any other direction in a RE game?) would make it more intense, since the screaming hoards would be slightly faster than you, adding a sense of panic.

Also, why does Chris (without using the 180 quick turn, which is completely useless in any situation that doesn't immediately require a 180 pivot.) turn around like he's on a lazy susan?

My prediction? Leon S Kennedy, back with a vengeance and roughly twice the size of Chris Redfield in RE5.
So much muscle he refuses to use a gun and instead runs (hobbles) around punching zombies in the face, decapitating Tyrants by putting them in headlocks, and arm wrestling El Gigantes.

Oh, and Wesker's back. Do you really think you can kill Wesker? Not a chance friend.

Am I hoping for too much when I say a would like a character who controls fluidly and responds immediately? Of course I am...

Looking forward to the next installment nonetheless though...loved RE4, and enjoyed RE5 despite failing in comparison.

I just want my zombies again. Also if you do go the action game route again like you did with RE5 (which is fine), please don't try to advertise it as a scary survival horror. Cause It gets me all excited about it, which leads to disappointment.
