I'm a long time fan of a series from a developer we've all heard of - capcom. Capcom has been known as a high quality developer for many years making such great games as Street Fighter, Ghosts and Goblins, the Resident Evil series and the greatest of all in my humble opinion - Megaman. Yesterday, I was brushing my teeth and started humming the theme song to one of my favorite levels from Megaman X: Storm Falcon. This train of thought led me to think, "now what the hell happened to the megaman series?" A few years ago I got one of the Megaman Zero games for my Game Boy. I played the game the whole way through but once I reached the end I realized that there were only a few levels I actually enjoyed. Now I don't want to get too deep into this game because this isn't a review.
What I do want to say is something that I think many of you old sidescrolling action vets want to say as well: "Why no more good Megaman games?" If you're like me, you grew up with the Megaman series as a staple in your video game collection, and at the time Megaman was a beaming example of level design, character design and overall some of the funnest games you've ever played. The question that you may be asking yourself is the same one I asked myself while brushing my teeth, "Capcom, what the fuck have you done?" Capcom seems to be doing just the opposite these past few years then they should have been doing with the series: releasing game after game of remake after remake that seems to be doing nothing more than cashing in on the series than actually creating a quality video game. It won?t be difficult. Just make a new game where you don the blue helmet once again and take on some new and interesting villain. I highly doubt that this will ever happen, because as we all know, developers want to keep vacuuming up the money from those kids that enjoy those bright eyed cutesy anime characters that they've turned exclusively this franchise into.
Now let me wrap my thoughts up just to make clear the point of my raving. Capcom, a genius developer does what many developers do over the years: comes out with a great design and idea, the game becomes legend then slips into mediocrity. What I want is for Capcom to bring back that formula of clever level design, interesting abilities and stop bombarding this series with such heresy as Megaman Battle Network. I'm not sure what is going to happen to the Megaman series but I just want to get the demons out of my mind and into some sort of written form to finally silence that part of me that thirsts for a new game that once finished I won?t feel like I willingly was dragged through mud and puke.
