Read up on how John Smith took charge of Jamestown if you want my opinion on the sort of economic mindset we should (re-)adopt.
are the robots fully sentient? if so, then wouldnt that be a form of slavery? and therefore, we wouldnt have jobs, so then the economy would fail?MONSTERheart said:In a perfect world robots would be doing all the manual work for us and we would have powerful computers that can quickly solve any unexpected problems that may arise.

carful with that philosophy, it is close to hitler'slwm3398 said:I-Free Thinker said:Yes. Anything that rewards people for not being lazy or stupid wins in my book.
I...
Yup. That about sums it up: Capitalism is "Only the strong survive" and "Work for and earn your money". That's the way it should be.
No, but there's no better alternative. Communism kills motivation out-right.Kwoodchuck said:do you support the economic model and the values associated with Capitalism?
Not that simple. It needs checks and balances otherwise you end up with the piss poor American health care system and your financial situation. The banks play with your money, lose it, then get a government hand out. The insurance companies dominate the market and set their own rules without having anyone to challenge them.Free Thinker said:Yes. Anything that rewards people for not being lazy or stupid wins in my book.
The fact that power corrupts applies to capitalism as well, you know. That's why I said that capitalism needs to be tempered by a strong government with socialist values. If the two are in balance, the economic powers and the political powers can keep each other in check. Most European countries have some socialist tendencies, especially Scandinavia, and they're doing just fine. No totalitarian regime, no rampant abuse of power. What is this mysterious reason you believe Sweden to be different from the rest of the world?Major Major Major said:Every goverment posessing the amount of power needed to redistribute goods turns into totalitarian regime (Sweden is a different case, to complex to explain here) Does the saying "Power corrupts" ring any bell?Hurr Durr Derp said:Put words in my mouth, why don't you? You seem to be under the impression that the only alternative to capitalism is some kind of nazism or malevolent fascism.Major Major Major said:Yeah, it's way better to sell your friends and coworkers to the secret police in exchange for goods and privileges than open up a business and earn that filthy, filthy money.Hurr Durr Derp said:Meh. Capitalism places more value on money than on human beings.
Oh, what am I talking about? Sorry, I forgot capitalism is the only reason why people are greedy.
You just don't read, do you? I could replace myself with a straw man and you'd parrot the same nonsense. As I said, just because someone is a capitalist does not turn him into a greedy money-making robot. Being a ruthless competitor in business has nothing to do with being a good person. Capitalism does not reward giving away your money. You know what does reward that? Tax breaks for charity donations. Which is a government-created way to stimulate charity. Which only supports my point.Major Major Major said:Wait, didn't Bill Gates donate like billions of dollars to Africa? When was the last time you saw Cuba or North Korea do it?My point was that Capitalism is geared towards rewarding those who make money, no matter how they do it. The main question capitalism asks is if something is profitable, not if it's a good idea. That doesn't mean that every capitalist automatically turns into Gordon Gecko, since we're talking about people here, not robots that conform to the optimal path within any given economic system. It's just that the system rewards those that do. Capitalism does not reward the selfless. That's why a government needs to oversee the whole mess and step in when things get out of hand.
Just smart enough to do manual labor. Like those factory bots at car factories, except farming fields.Kwoodchuck said:are the robots fully sentient? if so, then wouldnt that be a form of slavery? and therefore, we wouldnt have jobs, so then the economy would fail?MONSTERheart said:In a perfect world robots would be doing all the manual work for us and we would have powerful computers that can quickly solve any unexpected problems that may arise.

Of course, when we say "colonised Americans" we are referring to European settlers, not the North American Indians - who did get the really really bad deal.Kwoodchuck said:we did colonize the us, but it was greater in resources ( i think ), and also, no one (brits) live in africa. sorry if im a bit vague here, im not sure how to expand that
