3. Anime is not short for animation.(shock!) Its short for "Japanese animation!." Honestly it is.
Actually, it's not. It's an abbreviation for "Animeshon," which is a phonetic Japanese spelling of -- you guessed it -- "animation." So, "anime" is quite literally short for animation.

Yeah, I know several people like that, I couldn't disagree with them more.
I personally can't get enough of "The Emperor's New Groove". I never get tired of that movie.

Oh yeah. But that was before I showed my family The End of Evangelion.

Sigh... Good times.
What did your family do to you to make you hate them so much?
I Think it was the crudely drawn penises in my sketch book that kinda irked me. But hey they think La Blue Girl is pure comedic gold now. My sis cries during Haibane Renmei. And my mother thinks the world will end by giant robot, so I say it's worth it.
That's an interesting family you've got there. And your mother is probably right.

Unfortunately, I have. People that usually scoff at me and my love of cartoons.

However I would like western Cartoons with more substance, it's obvious to me that even though they are making 'adult' cartoons, they aren't giving them any real weight and instead most of them have been turned into dumb comedies, with only a few exceptions. It would be nice if we could get a Western equivalent of a sci-fi espionage drama like Ghost in the Shell or a large scoping story like Avatar or Gargoyles, except without having the need for comedic foils and not being afraid to show blood or kill people. You know, animation that is the equivalent of prime time TV drama. (the kind with good writing that is)

Pretty much my whole environment, including family (except for maybe one or two individuals) are like that.

And they don't think that just about cartoons, but games and pretty much every other nerdy hobby is also considered childish. Heck, when I wanted to put up a 30th Anniversary Star Wars poster my dad commented that "I wasn't a child anymore." Like, what the hell?

To put it better: all anime are cartoons, not every cartoon is an anime.

I got my knowledge from Wikipedia! Whats your reference!

"Anime (アニメ?, an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of "animation", pronounced [anime] ( listen) in Japanese, but typically Anime-en-US-pronunciation.ogg /ˈænəˌmeɪ/ (help·info) or /ˈænəˌmə/ in English) is animation originating in Japan."

Close enough... I was stretching it a little.

XD Hahahaha~ YES.

OT: Anyone who thinks like that just hasn't watched that many "cartoons", or any at all for that matter.

He's a she. Just pointing that out.

And yes, television cartoons and anime belong in an even closer sub-group, the one of animated cartoons. I like to compare it with biology myself, like this:

Thanks science!

What you said really doesn't want to quote...

There are toons for kids and toons for adults. They can cater to every audience just like everything else.

Yes, each one of those letters links to a cartoon that I find to be not just for kids.
Yes, that took me way too long to do.

Honestly? It's been a long time since I learned that little snippet. Could have been anything from the internet to a book, although wikipedia does back it up.

Terminology

Japanese write the English term "animation" in katakana as アニメーション (animēshon, pronounced [animeːɕoɴ]), and it is widely assumed[by whom?] that the term アニメ (anime, pronounced [anime] ( listen) in Japanese) emerged in the 1970s as an abbreviation.[citation needed] Others claim that the word derives from the French phrase dessin animé.[3][16] Japanese-speakers use both the original and abbreviated forms interchangeably, but the shorter form occurs more commonly.

It has a citation needed tag, but I'm almost certain I read it in a book somewhere back in middle school. It was probably one of those How to Draw books.

P.S.: The weird G in the middle of the word in my quote is an e with a line over it in the original. For some reason it didn't take in the copy-paste.

Edit to the Postscript: It did take. For some reason it didn't show up correctly in the preview.
