I was in Suncoast, when a parent was looking for "Cartoons" for her kid, searching in the Hentai section. Obviously wasn't looking at the boxes very closely...

People with the idea that cartoons are only for kids haven't watched a lot of cartoons themselves.
Oh snap! Not good for children...
Yeah, I see it a bit. Especially in my brother, what with him being a douche. But I ignore it. I decided long ago to stop getting depressed/exasperated/angry/etc at the stupidity of many people.
Even if you don't count anime, there are so many cartoons that are sort of kid friendly with great jokes and scenes and even stories for us more mature kids.

Yeah. Just show them ultra-violent anime or Animaniacs. Also, if CGI counts as cartoons, try any Pixar movie ever.

Yeah, the man who I share half my genes with. I also hear it a lot from music snobs. It's BS, I've seen cartoons way more 'mature' than any live action movie or show. Look at Toy Story 3 vs say both Transformer movies.

What is mature or grown up?
I totally agree with your point, would like to point out that technically all the transformers and special effects are animated to. Heck, animation is just about everywhere, just not always in your face.

I think it depends on the cartoon.
If a full grown man told me he enjoyed Dora the Explorer, I'd find it very odd.
But if another man said he liked Samurai Jack, I'd say: You wanna see my Samurai Jack DVD collection?
If that DVD collection goes missing tonight I have NO idea where it went. :D

OT: That saying is for the ignorant and unhappy. Seriously, cartoons are a nice break from reality where they can do anything they want to with a low budget, or just be plain crazy.

Imagine Ed, Edd, n' Eddy as a live-action show... See wouldn't be good.

Whoever tells me to stop watching Cartoons because they're for kids I tell them to stop being so ignorant and try and enjoy life.

I like Death Note and Persepolis, but even Death Note is a little adolescent at times.

Animated comedies tend to be better for some reason - South Park, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Dr. Katz unsw. Very varied styles, all really genuinely funny in their own way - the freedom of cartoons to experiment triumphs.

I think there's some truth in cartoons being a more 'immature' art form than some, even in anime and manga (which do tend to appeal to teenagers), but that's not the medium's fault. Film, for instance, has some shockingly immature examples - that Centipede movie, for instance, is pathetic. American Pie - funny, maybe in places, but very immature. Avatar? Good lord. And then there's all the Michael Baysplosions. That doesn't mean you can just write off films, just like you can't write off cartoons.

Hate Dragonball Z, though. God how I hate that show. Saw two episodes, the first was essentially one big fight composed of the SAME SHOTS OVER AND OVER for about twenty minutes, with no resolution, the second was the resolution of that fight and a little bit of nerd-tastic ranking of the fighters. It's just...ew. Merely the idea of "Power Ratings" makes me feel rage.

That cartoon is definatly 100% fun for all the family ;)
Its not a cartoon its an anime.

Which brings me to my main point. I've met people with the mentality that anime is cartoon. It gets pretty annoying.
Anime are cartoons.
Anime is short for animation, anime is just a different style of it.
No. Anime is by Japanese. It doesn't matter if its a different style. They are 2 different industries. They are both animation but they are not the same.

My parents are also like that. I'm 22 and in total, I have only met like 4 or 5 people in my entire life (and 2 of them were in a western EU country) who didn't say anime and adult cartoons were for little kiddies. Feggin ignorant people :<

On the topic of quality adult anime I'd gladly recommend "Mnemosyne no Musume Tachi".

Now, please excuse me while I go and finally catch up on "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni".

Could you please direct me to this 'Suncoast'.It sounds like a place that I would shop at.

OT:I don't know anyone, and have yet to meet anyone with the mentality.

I would rather say the 4th episode. It's a lot more brutal and bloody. And there are no real key plot moments in it,so you wouldn't really spoil anything.

Anime are cartoons.
Anime is short for animation, anime is just a different style of it.
No. Anime is by Japanese. It doesn't matter if its a different style. They are 2 different industries. They are both animation but they are not the same.
For clarification: A cartoon is not animated, but animations are called cartoons for some reason.
So a cartoon as in an animation is the same as an anime, it does not matter who made it.
Erm yes it does. They are 2 completely different industries which both animate and draw. The term "anime" is from the fact that they animate but in fact they draw more often then cartoons do.

Not only that your contradicting yourself. Or you've just said nothing useful, "Anime are cartoons.
Anime is short for animation, anime is just a different style of it."

You have yet to say anything linking them. All you've said is that anime uses animation. If cartoons aren't animation your making little of a point.

Also, cartoon is the style in which something is drawn. Anime is an industry built around manga. Manga is drawn. Your only possible worthy comparison is they are both drawn. I got news for you, so are a lot of things but it doesn't mean they are the same.

If your going to continue this I strongly recommend going and looking up the definitions for them both. You'll find little linking them together. And there's a reason.

I have that mentality, despite knowing it's wrong. I hide the fact that I watch cartoons from everyone around me, though they all do it too. Couldn't tell you why...

My mom is like this. I can get her to watch The Avatar, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Bleach (but not Naruto, which is actually superior). She watches soaps and movies instead and I find it ironic because soaps are just as juvenile, if not more so.

EDIT: not to say that Naruto is good. It just sucks less.

Jesus.......
I meant that everyone in the thread are refering to animations as cartoons.
Anime is animation.
Ed, Edd & Eddy, The Simpsons, South Park, Higurashi, Outlaw Star, Lucky Star, Cowboy Bebop and School Days are ALL animations.

Pepsi & Coke are both sodas, just because they are made by two different corporations does not make that untrue.

Honda & Volkswagon are both cars, just because they are made by two different corporations does not make that untrue.
1. Thank god you finally made a damn point.

2. I can guarantee you one of those was drawn. If you want I'll go find it.

3. Anime is not short for animation.(shock!) Its short for "Japanese animation!." Honestly it is.

4. To put it in a language easier to understand... Its not so much like Pepsi & Coke more like Pepsi & Dr pepper. They are both the same colour however they are made by different people from similar but not the same ingredients and the ending taste is very different.
