EDIT: READ BELOW!

I just found out something quite excrutiating, to be honest. Look here [http://cryptome.info/dk-censor.htm]. Read what is written in English, and I'll just flesh out the Danish part sporadically(What got censored): It states, in Danish, critical remarks about the EU and their laws against terror. Critical remarks about the Danish laws against terror. Critical remarks about the war against terror. It speaks for international solidarity, and freedom of speech.
- This means the government has already started to govern what is and is not tolerable on the internet, has started further structurizing and regulating the freedom of speech.

Original post: In light of recent events in Denmark (Thepiratebay.org has been censored by all Danish internet providers) I feel I need to resurrect this topic. I know there's been another one recently, last week I think, but this is quite serious since this is real.

The web-page has been banned for all Danish internet users. While it is possible to work around the ban, by configuring ones own dns, it is very bothersome and many does not know how to do so.

I'm really concerned, to be honest: Denmark, Kuwait and China are the only three countries to have banned the website. DENMARK IS ALONGSIDE CHINA!?
While I realised we had some censorship, I had no idea this was in the making. Excuse me, but what the fuck is the world coming to?

This is NOT the first case of censorship in Denmark either, christmas-time 2006 allofmp3.com was censored by all ISPs of the country as well. It had been an isolated case until now.

Any thoughts on this? Can we stop it? Will it stop by itself?

This can potentially get ugly fast, the government censoring whatever it deems inappropriate and illegal. Other countries will follow, no doubt, we just need one "western country" to lead the pack. I sure as fuck don't want it to be Denmark.

And allow me to stress the fact that I am not fighting for piracy, I am fighting against censorship. Thepiratebay.org alongside allofmp3.com are not in themselves illegal, and as such were decided to be "inappropriate" by the government.

Since people appear to "just not get it", I'll spell it out for you: This thread is not about whether or not piracy is or should be legal, not about the consequences of piracy, or the consequences of "not-piracy". This is a thread about censorship, and the consequences of censorship.

I doubt a mass censorship will come around any time soon though, but keep in mind that if it does, hundreds of millions of people are going to be fairly pissed off. Eventually, the more tech-savvy and the pirates themselves will find a workaround and find a way of making it easy to use and available to the public.

We create censorship for ourselves. What the Hell is with religous censorship anyway, and it all together? If a normal person eats paper it's wierd, but if it's religious, it's just FINE with me.
Religous disdain aside, censorship is annoying as it is plentiful. That's why the Internet it so great. It's impossible to completely censor, as people will always find a way around it. It also helps that's it's so big.

Isn't the piratebay.com a games piracy site? I would censor that.

What I don't like is censorship over enormously harmless things that are key in developing a healthy mentality, like a comprehension of sexuality, language and the realities of violence and people of different belief systems. That kind of censorship really gets up my ass.

But piracy? It's not only illegabut detrimental to the market from these goods are made and sold, so...what's wrong with banning it?

You're assuming that 100 million pissed will do something about it... at least in america 8 years ago when the supreme court decided Bush won, even in reality Gore would have probably had more votes had they continued the recount in Florida (and had more of the popular vote)... no one seemed to get angry then... I don't know in my experience everyone from "privledged" societies dont do shit about things like this (like america, the majority of europe... canada can come too), the only places where people stand up for themselves are the parts of the world where "shit goes down" (africa, middle east)

I'm not fighting alongside piracy, I'm fighting against censorship; There is a huge fucking different you ignorant bastards.

I may not endorse the website, but I shouldn't be denied viewing it either. If they thought the webpage was breaking the law, they should shut it down, not censor it from their customers.

This is a spiral, it will only get worse, not better: That's why I'm concerned. This isn't the first case of cencorship in Denmark either. allofmp3.com was censored one or two years ago.

That's the point though. It's not as simple as Piracy = illegal. Therefore censorship and filtering is ok. It's about what the censorship could entail. Now that denmark has censored one website based on illegality, what else could they censor? They could censor anything which they deem illegal, and this line of thought has the potential to get very nasty.

I'm not asking for a guide, mate; I can avoid the ban myself easily, but thank you.

This is my point exactly. This is a downward-heading spiral. It's not stopping unless things change. If it doesn't stop, it can potentially get ugly fast.

Nice to meet you, I'm Jim Doki and I'm about to hand you your ass.

Stealing is stealing. encouraging theft is illegal. Saying that you should be allowed to encourage stealing under the basis of free speech is ludicris. the otherer site you mentioned is ANOTHER questionably legal site. by your logic we should be allowed to view child pornography, because despite the fact we are endangering children, somebody has something to say

Yeah it's scary for me, because in australia this proposed net filter could potentialy censor porn, as porn is illegal in australia, and the filter filters all illegal material the government wishes.

And as we know, the internet basically = Porn.

99% of the internet could be censored. :\

Not quite. I didn't say 100 million people would stand up and fight it, but they'd sure as hell be annoyed. I'm not talking just people on the internet. I know plenty of people who barely use computers that would be a little annoyed that they can no longer pirate music or movies (heck, even my mother). So many would that it'd become a mainstream thing. It's a few smart people on the internet who'll do something about it until their solution becomes publicized and therefore the mainstream users will begin using that.

How did you just hand me my ass? By acting like it?

Let me stress the fact that I am NOT fighting FOR piracy or ANYTHING ILLEGAL I am just worried that this will only get worse. Censorship is censorship. A torrent-site IS NOT ILLEGAL IN ITSELF, as it IS NOT HOSTING THE FILES, it is a MEDIUM.

This means the website has been DEEMED "inappropriate" by the government. Which I can't really see anything good coming out of, not in the near future, and certainly not in the distant future.
