Sarah Kerrigan (aka "The Queen of Blades") from StarCraft.
Agreed, when they are like the Tyranids, xeno-lifeforms that just consume matter and multiply (to "survive" and/or prosper or whatever) they're awesome. But, speaking of Kerrigan;
Those FUCKING HEELS! Goddammit I (this is just my opinion, but it's time to vent now) hate when characters run around in high heels for no reason. It's not practical, it's not adventageous, it fucking counter-productive is what it is! HRGHGHH (Now I've vented, anyone who reads this, thank you for your patience).

Especially those fucking noodle-thin ones that would shatter as soon as you moved faster than a slow strut. (This is the case with a lot of goddesses in Smite, apart from Freya and like one other)

Daenerys Targaryen from Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones. Petulant, entitled piece of crap. The only reason she seems to want the Iron Throne is because Robert took it from her dad... who was the worst king Westeros has had since the original Targaryen invasion.

Stuff in the following tag may be past the point where the TV series is currently, so if you watch that, I recommend you don't show spoilers under the following tag.

She then proceeds to fall in love with a man she can't even talk to because he's not as brutal about his forcing himself on her as he could have been, proceeds to ruin the entire West cost of Essos' through a combination of complete bone-headedness when it comes to economics and making rash decisions based pretty much solely on her emotions, exiles her best adviser who's betrayed the throne of the Seven Kingdoms, ruining his only chance to get back his holdings out of sheer loyalty and adoration towards her, because he once did work for this once-in-a-lifetime, pie-in-the-sky opportunity and after all this she fucking dares to claim she deserves the throne. What gets my blood boiling is that I can see her potentially winning this whole damn thing because dragons. And for some reason, all of my friends are cheering this incompetent buffoon on. I just... my mind is boggled.

I also never got why Solid Snake was so well liked. He's just a boring action guy. Pretty much any other character in the Metal Gear series is more interesting than him. Don't get me wrong, he's got some interesting philosophical stuff to dish out, but it's nothing exclusive to Snake. The way Metal Gear does philosophy, it doesn't matter who's saying it, as long as someone is. Snake's not bad, he just doesn't seem to me to be enough of a character to be so widely liked. I do love the hell out of Raiden, he's actually got something interesting going on with his character. Less naked cartwheels would be nice, though.
I'm also getting pretty tired of Daenerys because of the above, just because "I'm entitled to this" is not a good motivation to start a war or invasion or whatever the hell she's planned... Does she even want it for the power or just because "it used to be OUR family on the throne"? I can't really remember.

Also, Snake. I like him (I'm not the world's biggest MGS fan, but) because of;
1: His voice (which I think is well done) and
2: The MGS-way of dialogue, which consists of
"Exposition and mention of X"
"X?"
"Yes, X + explanation (again)/blablabla"
(there are so many instances where that happens =P)

Tali Zorah vas fucking Nima. She's not pretty,
Wait, wasn't that kind of the point of her character? Not having a pretty face and getting around on her charming personality, deeds and voice-acting instead?

not charming,
Wait, what?

doesn't do anything,
What?!

Seriously, have you even played any of the Mass Effect games? ಠ_ಠ

I will never, NEVER, understand the love every other Dangan Ronpa fan seems to have for Byakua FUCKING Togami.

The guy's a dick, plan and simple!
He truly and vocally thinks he's better then every one else because of his money/family
He treats everyone around him like second class citizens
He's actively screwed with an investigation of a murder because "he got board"
He treats Fukawa like shit even though she worships the ground he walks on
And, with one debatable exception, during the course of his ark he NEVER acknowledges that he was in any way wrong or at fault for any of it!

And the fandom sodding loves him!
He's one of the most popular characters!
He's more popular then the canonically gay character in a fandom that started on TUMBLR!

DOES. NOT. COMPUTE.
I didn't realise he is so popular. But have you seen his, ah, more up to date picture? Maybe they'll think twice now...

Anyway, my picks are Karliah and Brynjolf from Skyrim and Anders and Fenris from DAII.
Anders and Fenris are basically two sides of the same whiny coin.
Brynjolf ain't a good thief and he isn't particularly bright either...
Karliah is an ass, one who is also not particularly bright.

Edit: Oh, and Liara. I found her charming-ish at first but she went from interesting to creepy quite quickly. Especially in the sequels...

The awful companions in Dragon Age: Origins made me stop playing that game. Leilana was alright, but she's the only one I could stand. I guess I was impartial towards Sten as well, he refused to talk to me at first and then I just gave up on him. When Jolee stonewalled you in KOTOR, that made me interested in his past, but Sten stonewalling made me just not care about him.

Alistair was incredibly boring and emotionless. He got mildly upset over Duncan's death, then went back to not giving a shit about anything and being a douche. Morrigan was the worst of them all. She felt shoehorned in so there would be somebody to support evil decisions. But she wasn't cool like HK-47 or Canderous were in KOTOR, she just came off as a mega *****. HK-47 and Canderous had reasons why they they were dark side, but it never felt like Morrigan had a reason to be so evil, she just was because reasons.

And I got the weird elf theif to join me, all I remember about him is he tried to kill me, and I might need somebody to die later on so I let him join my group. Then I quit.

Also I think there was a dog?

Morrigan.

Just in case I missed an answer, a somewhat subtle note on Morrigan is that she was specifically raised to be Evil-Stupid by Flemeth to A) Keep her from gaining allies, and B) Keep her from actually becoming a threat, all while developing her power. Considering that Flemeth's standard modus operandi appears to be raising a girl to be a powerful witch, then sacrificing her to extend her life, it Morrigan's alignment not only makes sense but is part of Flemeth's (and by extension her own) characterization. I'll agree that on her own Morrigan isn't the most interesting character in the game, but the role she plays in developing other character's, particularly Flemeth, makes her incredibly important plot wise.

I'm presuming you're talking about...

Having read the sequel in its entirety (screenshot LP's circulating around Tumblr were how this fandom started in the west, so SDR2, or rather Dangan Ronpa 2: Goodbye Despair over here come October, is already pretty well known among some of the longtime fans like myself), and without wishing to spoil anything... it's good to assume that nothing in a DR game is what it seems, this is no exception.
Also funnily enough, I actually prefer that version of Togami honestly, he comes off as much more of a "lovable jerk" as supposed to thin Togami who's just the regular kind. And he's still pretty damn popular, although the SDR2 side of the fandom is pretty singularly obsessed with Komaeda, it's hard to blame them.

Cloud from FF7. Funny I say this and I love Lightning from FFXIII. But in all seriousness, Cloud was cool when I first saw him in Kingdom Hearts, and then Advent Children, but then I play FF7 and I wonder what I saw about him that was...cool.

Arya Stark, from Game of Thrones (the TV show). I'll grant, I haven't read the books. But do I have to have read them to like the character in the show?

I don't buy that The Hound has decided to take her on as basically his adoptive daughter and risk his life to protect her for what will almost certainly end up being no money (he's got to know he might not get anything from her aunt, right?), she's delusional about her abilities as a fighter (it's only recently that she's even been able to take a random dude in a fight, let alone a trained soldier), she has no apparent personality traits aside from 'spunky,' she's been awful about keeping her identity a secret, and I don't think Maisie Williams has enough range as an actress to play her convincingly. A little bit of a sense of humor might give her some depth for example. And no, I don't think the hollow laugh from the last episode counts as 'humor.'

Also, it bothers me that people are so 100% sold on her (and Daenerys, but that's a different discussion). Is it just because she's a little girl and isn't doing girly things? I don't see why that makes her much less of a cliche: instead of doing generic girl things, she's doing generic boy things. How progressive!
The problem with Arya in the show is they have done an incredibly poor job of foreshadowing what is going to happen to her in comparison with the books. I mean there are vague hints, but... well I'll just say that things happened a little differently in Harrenhal in the books. Hopefully in the next couple of episodes, they'll stick a bit closer to what happened in the books or her character will be completely off the rails.

Ok, guys, thread is called "Characters love for whom you don't understand", not "Characters I don't like, who everyone seems to like" or "Characters who I find overrated". There's a pretty big difference.
To be fair, the first one is pretty comparative to the OT, though I'll agree with the second not being the same.

Back on topic, though, I don't get the love for the P4 main cast. I had always heard that they were well-developed characters, and while a lot of in-game time is spent developing them, it was all optional content and thus never affected their actual storyline interactions. So while they each had their own characters arcs, by the end of the story Yosuke still came off as an ass, Rise and Teddie were annoying and sometimes creepy, and the others were just kind of "there."
That is exactly what I've said about the romances in these games, they never enter into the main game, except, now that you mention it. the S links did the same. It's even worse for those S links that aren't party members. What is the fucking point, of building an S link, when it never adds up to shit gameplay-wise outside of some better Personas? If you go to this trouble, make them party members, because once the player maxes them out they will never speak to them again.

What I don't buy about the 'but cool stuff happens to her later!' line is the idea that there's some plot event that will make Maisie Williams a good actress or give her portrayal of Arya any depth, because those are things that require external intervention in the real world (like studying acting beyond making grim faces in the mirror, or thinking about Arya's motivations beyond the internal monologue of the space marine in the Doom comic). I think that somebody could have played an interesting version of Arya (in the same way that I could easily imagine somebody doing a very poor job playing Sansa Stark, who's one of my favorite characters in the show at this point), but that's not how things have gone down so far.

All three several times over. What did she do? When you meet her she gives the audio and that's pretty much it. She doesn't do anything useful in 2, nor in 3.

There are a lot... but I will go with Spider Man for this thread. I understand loving the super power, but I always thought Spider Man sucked as a character growing up.
