Any story with a "Chosen One". That's why I don't care for Harry Potter. To much emphasis on how great he is just because he is he.

I believe TVtropes lists these characters as "Wesleys"

I might get some hate for this since I haven't played the game, but from what I hear, he's the only companion who can actually heal in the game, so unless you play Hawk as a healer (which I'm sure most people don't want to be) you're stuck with him, not to mention He singlehandedly caused the tension between the mages and templars to escalate to all out war.

And while this isn't a "character" the devs loved too much, it always seems like in nearly every Rockstar game, the devs try to force the player into a racing mission, despite how annoying or boring it might end up, I play GTA for explosions and chaos, not because I think it has better racing mechanics then "Gran Turismo", the worst part about it is that while the missions are "optional" they usually are tied to opening up more of the world, so while you can go mess around in the tiny part of the world you're stuck in, if you eventually get bored of it and want to go somewhere else, then that means you'll have to do a racing mission eventually. "Want to get to Mexico in Red Dead Redemption? Well then... CHARIOT RACE!!!"
Ummm, I assume at the top you're talking about Anders, but you didn't actually mention any character...

I don't know, I seem to recall Allister getting the better of her a couple times. One time in particular with a backhanded comment on how she resembled her mother.
Hmm, I haven't seen that one. Wish I had, it might make me think more charitably of the character.

Also, the little girls towards the end of Bioshock. It seems like there's thousands of those darn splicers, and Tenenbaum gets mad if I accidentally let 5 or 8 of the kids die. Sheesh!
That's more like not being evil and letting innocent children die rather than favourism, though I think you're joking.

OT: Sonic the Hedgehog, his dev's often seem to be trying far too hard to make him cool rather than a rounded interesting character, or a amiable blank state like Mario is.

Put both Morrigan and Allister in your party and you will.

Edit: Actually I'm surprised you haven't. I got that one right away in Lothering; Before there were any other options for party members.

Altair Ibn-La'Ahad

Seriously, this fucker breaks ALL three rules of the Creed, gets one assassin killed and another maimed, but is not killed for his crimes like any of the others would have been in his position. Then there is really little to no actual development for him (I mean seriously, the only thing he does is find out that he's been tricked) and the man whose brother he killed just forgives him after just a few harsh words.

Then in the end, he literally gains god-like powers and becomes leader of the Assassin order.

This might have been swallowable if Altair had been given an iota of character and development outside of 'badass', but the devs seemed to think that would be enough to carry him throughout the game.

Oh and he gets a friggin SHRINE in AC2 and apparently had super future space armor too.

Strange. The only time I remember them talking about her mother was when Alistair called them apostates. I actually have both of them in my party for my current playthrough, but it seems they ignore each other, preferring to talk to Wynne.

Footnote: I looked up their banter on [a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acWi7VNSlho"]YouTube[/a]. Saw the conversation you mentioned. LOVED it! "I hate you SO much." Definitely haven't seen that one before. :D

Bioware seems to always have one of those.
Liara is the most obvious one I can think of. She is the only companion who cannot die and is romanceable by both genders, in ME2 you have no choice but treat her like a best friend, She is gushed over in the PS2 comic where as Kaidan and Ashley get a passing mention. She is described as "as beautiful as she is intelligent" and she gets her own DLC and a comic.
Morrigan dose get owned by Alister once or twice I think and by Sten and it's awesome.
Also

Rigght.

Wolverine. Not just in games, but in every damn thing. It's hard to think of any X-men thing without him.
Pretty much the same as this but substitute the word Deadpool for Wolverine, I really do hate that guy.
What do you mean you don't like Deadpool?!? He's the only comic book hero that can do this:

Uhm...duh? Splicers are drug-addicts who have nearly lost their minds and will kill anything outside of their community. They're the aggressors and if you want to live, you'll have to stop them. The sisters are a bunch of kids that get torn away from their family or kidnapped, get a sea slug shoved down their throat, are programmed to collect adam for the rest of their lives and nothing more, are the subject of many experiments AND are the only ones you can actually cure/save. She has every right to scold you for being an evil person.

Raiden
even gave him his own video game and turned him into a bad ass
If by badass you mean a bland, stupid, over-the-top Ninja, then yes. OOH NINJA'S ARE SO KEWL! WOOHOO SLICE THEM WITH YOUR KATANA YEAH! Opinions, of course, but I find they just turned Raiden into the often seen "Edgy, but kind character".

I would rather they didn't completely ruin his character and just change the amount of whining he did, but alas. You're right though, Kojima does like Raiden.

The ones that come to mind are Liara, Colette. I don't have to explain why Liara is loved by their devs, so I'll just explain the other.

Within ToS, Colette is always presented as that very calm, careful, polite girl that is completely selfless. Other characters constantly keep praising her for being her and the game keeps shoving her into your face as the main romance, even though a significantly better female character called Sheena is right next to you. Seriously, you have to act like an asshole to her throughout the entire game if you want to get her 'friendship-rating' on the same level as Sheena's. Why? Because the devs like her so much that they nearly force you to get the ending involving her.

She was unattached. After ME everyone else had something forcing them to take a certain action, she didn't so they could have her do what was needer plotwise to keep things ticking over.
I understand why it couldn't have been Ashley or Kaidan or Wrex doing it, due to plot complications and such. But at the same time, Liara does get a lot of preferrential treatment. She remains the only love interest who can't die, she was the only one who got her own huge bit of DLC and she was written to be the biggest Mary Sue that ever lived.

Plus in Mass Effect Genesis (the opening comic for the PS3 version of the game), while the other love interests got singe line descriptions like:
"A good kid."
or:
"A pure soldier."

Liara gets a whole paragraph worth of description given to her that ends with the phrase:
"And like all Asari, as intelligent as she was beautiful."

I mean come on. Could favoritism be any more blatant? She already gets the biggest role, her own comic, her own DLC, a guarenteed place in Mass Effect 3, is the only one who can't die and now she even gets better shout outs and descriptions then the other characters.

I guess I'm just sick of frequently being told 'hey, look how cool Liara is!'.

Look, if you are a Liara fan then I apologize if I offended you in any way. If you like her, that's cool. But I really think that in Mass Effect, and games in general, I can't remember the last time I saw a character earn this much of a 'writer's pet' status as Liara T'soni.

She's also the only character you can complete 95% of ME with and not recruit (excluding the Garrus/Wrex choice which I always considered a bit weird). I'm not really a fan but I've never really though of her character as being that obtrusive. I rarely even brought her along.

I really liked Liara, and I didn't get offended, everything you said really is true. I think the ME comic had to point out she was beautiful considering that unlike kaiden and ashley, she has blue skin and tentacles. And while you have to be her best friend at the very least in LotSB, which if your character wasn't could be a bit annoying, it makes logical sense she can't die. If Tali for example wasn't a companion choice in ME2, then the same complaint could be made for her, because she wasn't on the suicide mission. Other than that though, yeah, writers pet, but I'm cool with it.
