In Mass Effect, I didn't care much for Wrex, but I began to like him through the course of the story.

Hope - Final Fantasy XIII - Liked, Hated... then liked again?
I liked the look of him in the trailers, seemed to be an actually 'okay' kid. Then he turned out to be another whiney kid again, but then gets better when he eventually mans the f- up.

Really didn't like Raz from Psychonauts at first. However started to really like him when Raz discovers what Dr. Loboto is up to with the brains. I think it was around then that I started to warm to his character alot more.

Tali from Mass Effect. I suppose I didn't really like her that much, but I never hated her. But after completing her loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2, I grew to dislike her a lot. Though unlike a character like Reaver from Fable 2 it's not because she is poorly designed. I still think she is a good character, it's just that now she is a character that I hate.

On the other hand, I used to really hate Ashley. I think like a lot of people I just dismissed her as a racist ***** after having one short conversation with her. Then when I actually paid attention to her on a later playthrough I found that she had other qualities that I did like, and that her racism wasn't as nearly as bad as I thought and had some justification behind it.
This. I never liked Tali because...well...She just seemed usless in ME1, and I still disliked her in ME2.
I also disliked ashley from the get-go, seeing her as a selfish *****, then I talked to her and then i realized her personality is from her families experience.
[sub]Dusty: wow, that's deep man...
Smitty: I always thought that Chakwas chick was hot...
Ox: little creepy and off subject Smitty,, but I agree.
Jake: I liked everyone but Wrex in Mass Effect 1
All but Jake: WHAT?![/sub]

Strangely enough I didn't mind Ashley at first, racism aside, she just came across as a hardline soldier who didn't have any other choice but to see aliens as the enemy. I really started to hate her when I had lots of conversations with her, and realised what she was:

Racist - Check (I don't care how she spins it, she's extremely xenophobic when she has much more reason to hate her own species)
God-fearing - Check
Gun-nut - Check

SHE'S A FUCKING REPUBLICAN! IN SPACE!!!
While I liked that line (honestly the idea of a space rebulican is like Dick Cheney with a lightsaber and it makes me smile), I disagree on a few points. Like I said before she isn't completely xenophobic given that on Virmire she happily volunteers to work with Salarians and gets on well with them, respecting their skill and determination. Plus in Mass Effect 2 she acknowledges that while she isn't a great fan of aliens she'd still never work for an extremist group like Cerberus.
So in fairness I still wouldn't call her a racist, she has prejudices but not without justification.
Plus I didn't think she was god fearing, she was just religious. I don't really see an issue with people having faith in something.
Finally, the gun nut thing... well I gotta admit I do like a chick with a thing for guns.

But still you have your right to your own opinion, that's merely my own.

Actually Ashley does fit my criteria here too, I admit I wasn't a huge fan at first. I was kind of put off by some of the things she said but as I talked more it became apparent why she said those things and why she really wasn't as bad as I thought she would turn out to be, hence Shepard started off unsure of what to think of her and ended up sleeping with her.
I like to consider that a transition.

Also I must mention Grunt in Mass Effect 2 who I originally was going to dislike because as a Krogan ally he was inevitably going to be compared to Wrex (just as Miranda was compared to Ashley and frankly... still loses in my own opinon.) and frankly I wasn't really liking his angry 'kill everything for fun' routine because he reminded me of the Comedian from Watchmen and I hated that guy.
However I was surprised later down the road by how much I ended up liking him, he reached his peak when he and Wrex had a conversation on Tuchunka and after that I found myself bringing him with me on most simple missions.

So I guess here's hoping that I see Wrex and Grunt leading Clan Urdnot in Mass Effect 3.

I liked Duncan....At first.
"Oh cool, he's got the old guy vibe going on, He's awesome looking. He's totally badass! I guess he's going to be our 'obi wan'."

Time passes:
(WARNING. SPOILERS BECAUSE I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT HOW TO MARK THINGS AS SPOILERS)

"Oh by the way, you're going to be drinking something that has like a fifty fifty chance of killing you. Oh, and you've got no choice in the matter. Drink it or die."

Guy with wife and unborn child: "...Wait what? I'm not drinking it! I've got a family!"

Duncan: *SHIV* "I'm so sorry it had to be this way."

Me: "....You ****er!"

And the game won't let you call him out on it.
Seriously.
What the hell.

stuff about Duncan
Sorry but Duncan was completely badass and the Joining scene was too. And you can call him out on it and he explains why it had to be done.

My EXACT feelings about Ashley.

Tali doesn't count because I didn't dislike her at first, I felt "meh" about her to start with, and then it bloomed into something that might be akin to being a Tali fan. Seeing her lose control of her lust for me when her mask came off was enough to make me okay with playing male Shepard when I really like Femshepard's voice better.

You know who I really hate, though? Rachel, from Glee. I know that isn't a game. I just need to talk about how much I hate Rachel. The flat, completely obviously "normal" main character with no distinguishing features except that everyone has a misguided reverence for her voice, which is admittedly good but FAR from "the best in Glee" like everyone thinks she is.

Also she has a huge MAIN CHARACTER sign painted on her back for no good reason.

And she has a thing for her male equivalent, Finn. What a sickeningly typical teen show couple that will inevitably get together and make me hate them more.

Gordon Freeman
I liked him in HL1 because he was the regular protagonist that got to go to cool places. But in HL2 he really sucked because Valve tried to make him interact with NPC's without him ever opening his mouth. That just made him look pathetic

Leliana from Dragon Age
At first i liked her, despite her being a bit of a zealot, but after she describes her past as a Bard and how she thinks about it, she fel from grace quickly

Hope is the ultimate example of this. He's a whiny ***** at the beginning. Then he gets much, much better, although a little preachy for my liking.

Bioware takes the cake for characters I initially are cold towards, but have the full amount of motivations behind it, making them a fully likeable character.

Morrigan was a good one from DAO, I never saw her as an 'evil' character, just someone without the social graces, Leliana was another, just for the sheer fact I didn't wasnt to deal with an in game god botherer, but turned out that she one of my favourites...

I'm more than willing to put the entire DAO cast in here. Especially Zevran. God damn that elf was funny.

And to all hating on Tali - i can understand, but she has her reasons. And that's why I love Bioware.

All characters who at first are your comrades then turn traitor. It insta-kills all plot credibility and it's been done to death like the whole Dracula thing.

Luke Fon Fabre from Tales Of The Abyss

In the beginning of the game he is a spoiled twat who is so needy and annoying that I pretended that he wasn't the main character. His personality eventually causes him to fuck up so bad that the entire party abandons him for being such a horribly whiny person. Thankfully he gets a lot better as the game progresses, but in the beginning I really wanted him to die in a fire and let someone else be the protagonist...

Bastila from KotOR. I went from hating her guts to feeling like her big sister. D'aww. <3

Morrigan from Dragon Age. I went from HAATE, to being another sister, then massive hatred again.
