Everyone in Final Fantasy XIII, really.
I thought they were quite the likable bunch. Apart from Hope, but I forced myself to like him. It's a long game, being annoyed for that long'd be depressing.

Everyone I personally know seems to dislike Spider-Man too. I'm ignoring the fact it's probably because he's a bumhole and assuming they're all jealous of his wall climbing and other shinanigens.

Recently? Rochelle, of Left 4 Dead 2 infamy.

I don't see where the hate comes from. Seriously. Can someone explain?
If people actually listened to her dialog, she has more funny lines and decent zingers than Ellis, Nick, or Coach.

[/edit] Well, okay. Maybe not more than Coach. Coach is the man.
I think it may be that she simply isn't Zoey.
I hate her for an entirely different reason though, Whrnever the AI fucks up badly enough to get us all killed it's ALWAYS Rochelle.
I Don't get it, the AI is definatly worse in 2, but why did they program Rochelle to activly undermine our efforts?
I've heard that reason from people as well. That somehow her AI scripts are "worse".

However, I always ask people this, "When you play with fewer than 4 people, who usually ends up being the bot? Rochelle? Gee, I wonder then why you always seem to think she has the worst AI. It couldn't possibly be because you see her as the bot more often."

I know it's not always the case, but I've seen it way too often. In my case, Ellis is always the one that f#cks up my teams efforts.
I'd entertain that as a possibility if not for the fact that I usually play split screen offline with my mate and it's alaways Rochelle, we even took to playing as her to improve our chances, AND IT WORKED!
It could have been coincedence but I am of the belief that the LFD2 AI is very fucking stupid except for Rochelle, she's smart but increadibly vindictive.
That or she's on the director's pay roll.

Jar Jar Binks.

I liked him! He was funny! I don't understand how people can love basically every other alien in the Star Wars franchise but hate Jar Jar.
I second this. What really mystifies me is why people say his character is a racist stereotype against Jamaicans or some shit like that. By that logic, shouldn't C-3PO, a character whose personality practically screams "uptight British butler," be considered a racist stereotype as well? No? Oh, it's because the British are stereotypically white, so that makes it okay somehow.

Anyway, I'm going to go with the Rookiee from Halo 3: ODST. I don't understand why people hate this guy so much simply because he's mute. The Master Chief hardly talked during gameplay, yet people loved him. Gordon Freeman doesn't talk at all, yet he's regarded as one of the most influential characters in gaming. Link only communicates with grunts and yells, but his place in the gaming pantheon is unquestioned. Mute protagonists are popular because it's easier for us to project our own personalities into them. It's just hard to fathom why one blank slate is somehow better than another blank slate.

I never really used Thane in my party (I was the same class already, saw no need) until I saw a certain part of his loyalty mission

00:24-00:40

He was in my party every mission after that.

EDIT: Right, forgot to answer the question. Despite a recent thread showing an awful lot of love for him, I remember how hated Alistair was on this forum, and I thought he was a great character.

This. I liked every character after they got their Eidolon, and Snow was especially fantastic after Hope confronted him.

Tidus. Every time I see him mentioned it's always someone going on a rant about how he's a whiny emo douchebag, which I don't agree with. He was a fairly standard JRPG protagonist, i.e. a blonde teenage androgene. I don't think he was that great, but I don't see why people hate him so much.

Fuuka, Yukari and Junpei - Persona 3
Teddie, Rise and Yosuke - Persona 4
Ashly and Kaiden - Mass Effect
Reaver - Fable 2
The entire cast apparantly - FFVII and VIII
Tidus, Yuna, Rikku and Wakka - FFX
Apparantly the entire cast - Dragon Age: Origins and Awakening
Raiden and Rose - MGS2, though I did start to dislike rose in 4 a little.
Jar Jar and Anakin - SW Ep1, I just didn't hate them.

I'm gonna cut it short here, suffice to saay if a charecteer is universily despised I probebly won't see why.
Yeah, the hate that Fuuka and Rise got from some fans confused the hell out of me. But I don't see Reaver. Everyone I know loves him, as do I, and the fact that Stephen Fry is his voice actor means he will never be hated.

Fucking Loved Thane, just finished my first ME2 playthrough and he was my first picked every mission.

Which made it all the more surprising and heart-wrenching when he was dragged off and devoured by a seeker swarm. Oh god I hate you sometimes Bioware...

Some people didn't like Garrus in the Mass Effect series. I thought he was awesome.

Starkiller, Edge Maverick, Croix Bartell, and other characters that share this particular trope.

These characters aren't really all that similar, and actually I'm not all that fond of some of them. However they have one thing that makes me have to love them anyway. Both in the game itself and in real life people call them out for being big babies. They act like they're whiny and annoying. And yet these are the guys who genuinely deserve to be whiny (lost family, their actions caused the deaths of MANY innocents, etc.).

Characters who whine for no reason deserve to get called out on. But why do characters who have pretty believable reasons for getting depressed get the same tag thrown at them as little whiny kids?

Oh well, my answer.

At the beginning of this playthrough I promised myself that all descisions were final; which is why I didn't have samara's Loyalty. Or Zaeed's. Or jack's...
