But my choice would be Isaac Clark, because I just finished Dead Space 2 and was really blown away by how well they implemented the character. Everyone calls him generic but I don't see it.
Standard characterization test: describe Isaac's personality without referring to his job, appearance or any of his specific actions.[/quote]

Although his back story isn't as fleshed out as other characters I think it was because Visceral were trying to strike a balance between having a speaking character and also allowing you to project upon him.

Even with that there are specific personality traits that come across through the games.

1) His guilt over his girlfriends death
2) His need for redemption
3) The love that he shared with her and how it blinded him in the end.

That's all pretty big personality traits, without getting too specific. Again, with this game in particular, it's not for everyone. But I was very quickly able to identify with him as a character and was glad that it was not beaten into you.

Maybe it helps that my fiance's name is Nicole :p

Well, I don't think he's hated. but Thane Krios, I can't see anyone who shows him the love he should get!
I never really used Thane in my party (I was the same class already, saw no need) until I saw a certain part of his loyalty mission

00:24-00:40

He was in my party every mission after that.

EDIT: Right, forgot to answer the question. Despite a recent thread showing an awful lot of love for him, I remember how hated Alistair was on this forum, and I thought he was a great character.
...May I ask why? o_O...
Why about which, Alistair or Thane?
Thane, it seems a rather strange reason to always use him?

In retrospect it is, but it seemed rather badass at the time, and I was drinking that night.

How can you not like Garrus? The guy's just brilliant and, if you listen to him at certain points, has a picked sense of humour. He's my first choice for most missions because I know I can depend on him.

Personally I've seen a lot of hate directed towards Jacob Taylor and I can't think why. He's as honest as the day is long and, like Garrus, he's dependable and I have a lot of time for him.

In addition, Shinji Ikari. If only because he CAN be badass and, in his situation, I'd probably do the same things.

Who are these CRAZY people? He is Space Batman.... Garrus is King.

I personally liked Ashley Williams. Ashley and Tali in EVERY mission.

I'll say Kreia from Knights of the Old republic 2. Some of my friends said how annoying it was that she would criticize everything you did, good or bad. This confused me because it fits her character and her relationship with the Exile. Kriea wants to be the exile's teacher but not force her views on the exile. She just wanted the exile to consider the actions of everything she did and offer an alternative point so the exile doesn't swing to one extreme or the other. Kreia understood the importance of balance and making your own decisions, that's what I loved about her. That's the make up of a true teacher.

Then of course people got pissed with her twist.

Basically, they said her reveal as the sith Lord was too obvious and came as no surprise whatsoever and how it was totally lame bro.

To which I reply, of course it was obvious. Did you ever stop to think that was the point? They show an entire cinematic clip showing her sith lord history, maybe it's because she wanted you to know? Kriea believes in growing stronger through struggle and everything she did throughout the game was about putting challenges in front of the exile to train them and make them even more powerful and wiser. So logically once the exile was ready she needed to test the exile against the strongest person she knew. Herself.

The Little Lamplight kids.

Seriously, I loved them all (except Princess). It was by far my favorite resting/shopping/exploring town.
People hated that town? That was actually pretty cool(except for Princess) That place was just interesting. You know, kids living alone in a post apocalyptic world was a good idea, at least it didn't go all lord of the flies. Wait, that would actually be pretty cool....

Kaidan Alenko and Carth Onasi. "Oh Kaidan Alenko is voiced by Carth Onasi's VA so he must act the same way as him" The Carth/Kaidan is whiny bandwagon gets on my nerves. Alas that's why we say Kaidan suffers with "Onasi syndrome" because people can't separate the two characters as they have the same VA...

Tingle from LoZ Windwaker. He was only in it for a short while and i didn't dislike him at all.

Desmond from Assasins Creed. Didn't dislike or like him yet everybody seems to hate him.

Yeah, show some love for Jar Jar!

He was just trying to help. D:

Raiden from MGS 2
Hope, Vanille, Lightning from FF XIII
Tidus, Yuna, Rikku from FF X.
Paine from FF X-2.

Most of them are pretty hated for being whiny emo douchebags but when you think about it, most of them have a damn good reason to be such. As for the others who aren't whiny emo douchebags, I just like them, OK? XD
Same here. I like the lot of them (though I really don't mind what they did to Raiden in MGS4). I'd also like to add Navi. She always sticks with you, even when the going gets tough.

I second this. What really mystifies me is why people say his character is a racist stereotype against Jamaicans or some shit like that. By that logic, shouldn't C-3PO, a character whose personality practically screams "uptight British butler," be considered a racist stereotype as well? No? Oh, it's because the British are stereotypically white, so that makes it okay somehow.

Anyway, I'm going to go with the Rookiee from Halo 3: ODST. I don't understand why people hate this guy so much simply because he's mute. The Master Chief hardly talked during gameplay, yet people loved him. Gordon Freeman doesn't talk at all, yet he's regarded as one of the most influential characters in gaming. Link only communicates with grunts and yells, but his place in the gaming pantheon is unquestioned. Mute protagonists are popular because it's easier for us to project our own personalities into them. It's just hard to fathom why one blank slate is somehow better than another blank slate.
He's the biggest racial stereotype i've ever seen in a film, granted i was like 11 when TPM came out and had no idea what a racial stereotype was but growin' up and seein' it again gives it a whole new light to me. That said, i can't actually hate his character.

Brucie from GTA 4.

Many people hated him, but I thought he was fucking hilarious. He even earned a special spot in my top ten favorite characters of all time.

The Master Chief from Halo. A lot of people give him flak for being another "generic alpha-male in power armor". Of course he is, he's the reason why that phrase came to be. When the Master Chief was first created, there was no such thing as "another generic alpha-male in power armor". I mean, he's not the greatest character of all time, but his only real drawback is that he doesn't talk much. Which, as many Half Life fans will tell you avidly, is not a real drawback.

Vanille & Lightning from Final Fantasy 13. Still dislike Hope & Snow, though.

Jacob from Mass Effect 2. (I hate, hate, hate Miranda & Jack. HATE. Even after their loyalty missions.)

Adoring Fan from Oblivion.

Desmond & Altair from Assassin's Creed. I like them both more than Ezio, to be honest.

Kaiden from Mass Effect 1. (Fuck you, Ashley. Fuck you!)

Sten & Oghren from Dragon Age: Origins. Love them. Hate that they are both Two-Handed Warriors, since that kinda means I shouldn't use them both at the same time.

Oh this, very much this. I thought that neither Carth nor Kaidan were that whiny. Sure, they whined a little bit, but considering what their characters had gone through, they deserved a little self pity. And they always made up for it in the end.

Personally, I like Navi. She gets unnecessary flak and people always overlook Ezlo from Minish Cap.
I've always loved Navi, to the extent that I nicknamed one fo my friends navi one day when they were poking me in the shoulder shouting "Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Listen! Hey! Hey! Hello?"

Awesome part: They'd never played Zelda in their life.
