So, this thread is for you to list the characters that you love, those true bastards you love to hate, and the ones that you just plain hate with a burning passion. So, while I'll let you all post your own selections in time, I'll of course start this off.

For those that see a wall of text and balk, you don't have to read the rest. This is just my own contribution to the thread. Fell free to be as brief or as elaborate as you feel in your own comments.

Character I love: Batman
This one took a minute for me to think of one. There are plenty of characters from plenty of series/shows/games/etc that I enjoy. I could probably list 3 or more characters from more than a few things that I really like. But none of them compare to Batman. While I'm not a comic book fan, I'm sure if there was one I would actually enjoy, it would be a Batman comic (even heard in the recent DC reboot his comic is the best). But it's not just that. It's movies. Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight are all great films. Hell, even Batman Forever and Batman and Robin are almost so bad that they are good. And I'll deem you a heretic if you call Batman: The Animated Series anything other than great. I also enjoyed Batman Beyond and while The Brave and the Bold is kinda campy, I found the episodes I watched enjoyable. And don't forget The Justice League series. Even among the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern (all of whom are far more powerful) Batman came away as the greatest hero of them all. Just using his wits, skill and determination. I'll even consider his rogues gallery as part of the reason I like him. Hey, they wouldn't exist without him, and most people will tell you that Batman has the best rogues gallery of any superhero.

Character I Love to Hate: Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender
There was no greater villain in the entire series. She's the youngest child of Fire Lord Ozai and little sister of Zuko. She's far more prominent in the series than her father and acts as the main antagonist for two seasons (or close enough). She's an incredible fire bender prodigy. So much so that her flames are blue and she is one of the few people in the series capable of bending Lightning. But skill is just the beginning. She's intelligent to boot. And can read people with incredible accuracy. She's incredibly manipulative and a pretty good strategist. She even conquered the Earth Kingdom with just herself and her two friends which is something Iroh couldn't do with an entire army (though he came close). She predicted the Day of Black Sun invasion and prepared for it. I think it says a lot that Ozai listened to her despite the apparent belief that the Avatar was dead. One of the scenes that stands out the most was when she recruited her friend Ty Lee. Ty Lee had joined the circus and wanted to stay, but when it became apparent that Azula was just going to keep tormenting her with insane requests (set the net on fire and release all the wild animals) at the show Ty Lee joined Azula's mission. Keep in mind that she did that to a friend. Yeah, Azula is an evil *****. And I loved her for every minute of it.

Character that I Hate: Cell from Dragonball Z
I hate him so much. Not because he is a villain. No, I hate him for his arrogance and sense of entitlement. First, Cell is proud of his strength. But he didn't earn it. He was created with cells from Goku, Vegeta, Picollo, Frieza, and even Tien and Krillen. He even gains a large amount of his power from absorbing people for their Ki, so that's not even his own. All of his techniques are developed from other people. And, in order to attain his perfect form, he had to absorb Androids 17 and 18. Yet despite all this, he's so proud of "his power". No, Cell, it's not your power. You just stole it from other people. When Vegeta had him on the ropes, he just became angry and belligerent. For that matter, when Gohan had him beaten after attaining Super Saiyan 2, Cell did the same thing. Going so far as to self destruct in an effort to kill them all. Yep, when things didn't go his way, he acted like a spoiled brat. And when he survived his own suicide, he came back and fired an aimless attack that killed Trunks. Pretty much just to be a dick. Honestly, I never really got his motivation. If he just wanted to test himself, he didn't have to threaten the planet. Goku would have happily fought him for the challenge. And why would he destroy the planet if no one could beat him, especially since he already believed himself to be the unbeatable superman (who throws a hissy fit when he loses)? Oh, yeah. Just to be a dick. God, I hate Cell.

don't all rush the thread at once guys .....

love
Terra Brandford, FF6,
why?
her entire development arc, watching her grow as a person was on of the highlights of 6, and the fact she's a mage with a knights gear set, makes her even more awesome, kinda like Celes but Celes didn't really evolve as a character through out the game like Terra did.

love to hate
also from 6, Kefka
dood is final fantasy's 'joker', he's batshit insane, kills, less on a whim an more cause it amuses him, not to mention what he dose to the planet, he's not deep, not complex, he desires nothing other then to watch the world burn while he laughs

straight up hate
Sephiroth
XD kidding (even though i do in fact despise him)
Jasper Baton Jr (No More Heroes 2)
seriously, FUCK THIS PUNK >. fine ... BUT, some one HIRED Travis to kill them, yet he's taking it out on Travis like it was his idea to begin with, and has Travis's friend murdered. then there's fighting him -.- by the gods ... his voice is irritating, his character design is shit, I'm not entirely convinced his boss fight didn't have music it was that forgettable, his moves are ether lame or cheap, or both, and .... he has 3 stages, 3 F~~~UCKING, STAGES, none of which are fun, or interesting in the least. seriously, fuck this guy, hope who ever it was that thought he was a good idea got fired

If I talked about characters I loved, we'd be here a while. So, for short, I'll just say Caim from Drakengard (see avatar picture) and Yuri from Shadow Hearts.

I'm not sure off the top of my head for a character that I love to hate, though.

And for one that I really hate, oh, geez, Rosemary from Metal Gear Solid. I hate her with a fiery burning passion.

Love
Matrim Cauthon, Wheel of Time.
Past book 3ish, I can't think of a single scene he's in that I didn't like.

Love to Hate
Discord, My Little Pony.
That's just what happens when you have a villain voiced by John DeLancie.

Hate
Shion Uzuki, Xenosaga.
I could talk for hours about all the reasons I hate her, but let's just say that it's the only game I've ever played where I was happy when the monsters beat some sense into a protagonist, and leave it at that.

Off the top of my head
Character I love: Cable, I grew up in the 90s and he was my favourite comic boook character, more recently it was Cable and Deadpool that brought me back into comics as an adult. Love the character, he's pretty much the pinnacle of all that was wrong with the dark age of comics (huge guns, convulated backstories, ill defined powers, "badass" appearances), yet because he's the original it works for him.

Character that I Hate: Tommy Carcetti from the Wire, he's a great character but I hated him with a fiery passion by the end of the show, pretty much because he actually sold me that he was Baltimore's one true hope and then he went and fucked everybody just for his political future.

Tell me about it. I had thought this idea would get some responses. It's not like I'm asking people to post long responses. Thought I made that clear in my post.

But, yeah. Don't you just love those great villains? They are so fun to hate. Kefka and the Joker are cut from the same cloth and I expect to see them in a lot of responses (assuming anyone posts). I largely choose Azula because she's not obvious, but I really did enjoy hating her.

Trust me. If I started posting all the characters I love, even without explanation, I'd still be typing. There are plenty of great characters that are great fun to play, watch, and read. As for the one you love to hate, that can be tough, but I'm sure you can think of one if you try. Villains are probably the best fit for this. I say probably because I'm sure someone will find a way to love to hate a heroic or neutral character.

Love: Dick Grayson, Batman Comics
He went from a useless sidekick(useless to me anyway) to a badass hero with his own city to patrol. Now he's basically Batman without being a depressing loner.

Love to hate: Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto
This is one of the only times when I like a support character in a manga more than a main character. He's calculating, cool under pressure, and his move set is way more diverse than Naruto who just spams clones all day.

Hate: Light Yagami, Death Note
Screw this guy. His intentions are ok the way he goes about it are just so freaken insane. Light is willing to kill off his own family just so he doesnt get caught. I was so happy when Near started wreaking his shit

Love
Yuri Volte Hyuga from Shadowhearts. This guy is a true hero by the end of the second game and rarely gets overly serious like most rpg heroes. Yet when you first see him in number 1 he REALLY doesn't want anything to do with the heroine or the creepy old man trying to kidnap her. He's forced to become the hero he was always meant to be.

Love to hate
Tiamat from Last Scenario. I'd never heard of the game (freeware rpg) when I found it but I'm glad i downloaded it because it contains one of my favorite villains ever. Tiamat approaches Kefka level evil and insanity without the creepy clown motif that made it so hard for me to take him seriously.

HATE
Cloud. I will never understand the love for this useless douche of a character. He finds out he was part of an experiment to duplicate Sepiroth's powers, goes into an emo coma, hands Sephiroth the Black Materia and we're still supposed to like this guy? no, just, no.

hmmmmm well a character I love would probably be Legna from drakengard 2, he's funny, lovable and can wipe out a ton of dudes in one attack.

Love to hate: Kefka pallazo (FFVI and dissidia) i hate the guy's moves and the fact that he hide behind and army for most of the game BUT I have to say that I can't fully HATE the guy simple because of his dark sense of humor.

hate: Cloud Strife FFVII and Dissidia, the dude spends the whole of all three games I've played with him(including duodecim) simply whining and complaining, even his voice actor pisses me off

Expect spoilers.

I stuck to video game characters. For some reason (even after reading the examples in the OP) I thought that this was only about video game characters. Oops. xD

Love.
Zoe Castillo (Dreamfall: The Longest Journey).
I love how she reacts. I love it when she responds to what happens to Rezza and how she chases him. Or how she responds when she finally meets Faith face to face. Or even her interaction with her robotic gorilla thing, Wonkers. She's a great example of a very human character for me.

Love to hate.
The Darkness (The Darkness).
Very strange choice as I don't hate it. In fact, as a gamer I can honestly say I love it (as I appreciate the way it was written and voice acted and portrayed), but taking it in the context of the game world, I can't help but hate it for what it constantly did to Jackie and the people around him. I mean, I don't know anyone who could forgive the Darkness after being forced to watch that scene. It had all the power in the world to rip open that door or burst through the window, but it refused to let Jackie save her.
That game doesn't get enough credit for its writing. xD

Hate.
John Marston (Red Dead Redemption).
Mostly because he had potential. There were moments where he shined as a character (he was just a man who wanted to change his life, but was forced back into his old life). But then he just came across as a dumbass. He'd say things like "I just want to find my family." when asked to help someone but then immediately proceed to help them (that example is from one or two of the marshall quests early on). Or he's more than happy to work with a bunch of douches who will obviously turn on him when he could have just has easily asked that old gunslinger to get him in touch with the rebels (who pretty much everyone said were working with the people he wanted to find). Or then there's the last mission where for the first effing time in the game he actually refuses to do what he's being forced to do. He just tries to demand his family minutes before he reaches his final goal (of course moments later he's easily persuaded into following through with the mission). What the hell, John? Didn't think to mention that before now (other than just randomly asking where your family is)?
And then there's his son which takes him even farther over the edge. The whole relationship begged for some subtlety that never came. The ideas were solid (dad feels guilty for not protecting his family, son feels rejected and blames the father for leaving). But when you flat out say something like ‎"You'll show me [how to hold a gun] and then just run off again." you're lacking some grace and subtlety (a quote from his son who isn't much better but held even more potential). >>
Oddly enough (compared to my love to hate) this game gets too much credit for its writing. On average it's poor. Especially for a Rockstar game.

Not sure I have any favourites for each so I will just write some that come to mind

Love - Makoto Nanaya from Blazblue not sure why but her character always makes me smile I like her dialogue and while she may be a bit stupid she isnt foolish or weak and can mix it up with the best of them.

Love to hate - Liquid snake because hes so ridiculous I cant help but hate him for it but always end up forgiving him because he always kept me amused "its not over yet snake"

Hate - That guy in Ghostbusters who makes them turn off the ghost container field thingy despite them warning him of the consequences then when it is shut down and everything turns to crap he complains at them for that as well bloody idiot, really hate those kind of people.

Love: Ricewind. The Discs worst Wizard and most epic Coward. Unwilling hero and seemily impossible to kill (not even the grim reaper knows when he's suppose to die).

Love to Hate: Rufus from FF7. If there ever was a bastard i wanted to kill it was him. An all around dick. I openly cheered when he was killed by Diamond Weapon (i don't count advent children)

Hate: Ghostface (the killer in the Scream movies) The face that ruined Horror for a generation. And to make matters worse he's not even scary. If i saw a guy dressed like that coming at me with a knife i'd kick his ass and rape him.

you could add Shin Auska >.> he ruined the whole show for me, the whinny little shit, actually ...

Straight up hate prt2
Shin Auska, Gundam Seed Destiny
whinny little bastard, for the WHOLE 52 EPS!!! >.<. yeah i get it he's up set his family was kill when the earth forces attacked Orb, but he gose on, and on about it, even going so far as to hate Orb, like there the ones that kill his family, the 'biggest battle' he won was against the Freedom, and ONLY cause Kira was holding back. then there's how easy he is to manipulate, minor ego stroking and bam, he'll do what ever you need -.- and this fuckers one of the main cast...

by contrast ....

Character i love prt2
Kira Yamato, Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny
yup, Kira, yeah, he cried >.> a lot. didn't stop him from being a bad ass. lets take stock a moment, he's a Coordinator, meaning he's genetically engineered to grow at a far faster rate, in terms of mental and physical ability, and even among them he displays ability that puts him near the top. on that battlefield, he makes an entire army look dumb, even beating back several of their aces in 4on1 combat, until he gets the Freedom, then he flat out owns everybody, and more impressively, after getting the Freedom, he stops killing (with the exception of La Crueset) instead he disables enemy units, and when that entails, 30+ doods at once, yeah, that's awesome. as for him crying, I'm more inclined to be more forgiving of Kira's crying then Auska's because Kira isn't a raging, holier then thou ass hole the whole time, at his core, he's just quite guy that wants peace, even if he has to fight to maintain it.

and ....

Love to hate prt2
Dracula, Castlevania :)p betcha though it'd be another Gundam character)
really got nothing much to say here, just like him, the vast majority of his battles are great, and a few have him well characterized, and the twist in Aria that you where PLAYING as him, pure awesome

Love - we'll be here a while... get back to you on that.

Love to hate - I dunno, but for some reason, Cesare Borgia from AC:B.

Hate - Gaius Baltar, never have I wanted to punch an actor in the face. I mean, who serious doesn't want to drop kick this guy?! (Sorry, James Callis...)

The Strawhat pirate from One Piece. I like each and everyone of them

Love to Hate
Blackbeard from One Piece. Sure he's a coward and but you can't denined that he is an awesome ability!

Hate
Of all the Lannister (except for Tyrion) I hate Joffrey the most in Game of Thrones. There are so many bad things can say about him (a coward, arrogant, a liar and an overall prick).

Love: Vegeta : DBZ; From the start i loved him, he was awesome, so arrogant and so proud, seems like any old evil jerk from the start, but he has deep internal problems with the loss of his race and the death of his Father.

Love to Hate: Azula: Avatar; I completely agree with you OP one of the best written villains i've seen in a long time, Talented, Deadly, Smart, Very Manipulative, Resourceful, just makes the perfect villain.

Hate: Yahiko Myojin : Rurouni Kenshin; Never seen such an useless character in my entire life, a whiney brat, always trying to be Kenshin and shit, screwing things up and just ruining any good moments.

Love: Zero from Mega Man X. He's incredibly badass, you can't help but love him.

Love to Hate: Chris Jericho. He's cool as a babyface, but man, he is one of the best heels ever. He makes you actually legitmately hate him!

Hate: John Cena. I really don't care that he is the face of WWE. He completely blows in the ring, and he really doesn't deserve the WWE Championship.
