A thread about character deaths, so yes, expect spoilers.

Has a game ever forced you to kill a favourite character, or forced you to take a path that lead to their death? Most likely yes, as it remains one of the best ways to emotionally invest players in the story and the characters.
So... which games and which characters?

Saren. I'm still angry that there wasn't any way to save him.
Augustus Sinclair from BioShock 2. He was the only character that I thouroughly enjoyed in that entire game, and I had to kill him. Bastards. Or should I say, "*****", as I promptly started yelling at Lamb for making me do this.
Also from BioShock, Andrew Ryan and Frank Fontaine. I woulda teamed up with either one of them in a heartbeat if the game had given me the chance; instead, I got a bland ending that didn't feel like it had accomplished anything.
Zelos Wilder. As much as I wanted Kratos on my team I felt really bad for killing Zelos. Which is why in the next playthrough I put him in his speedo outfit to lighten the mood.

Mass Effect I disagree with as it is his fault in my opinion, especially if you have read the expanded universe stuff.

I agree with the Bioshock 2 one, it felt unnecessary. The Bioshock ones I don't agree with but I share your dislike of the ending.

I know it wasn't necessarily manditory, but in Halo: Combat Evolved, there was a marine who had gone psycho, and was about to kill himself, but if you waited long enough he would start shooting at you.

I killed him the first time, and I still kinda feel sad about it.

Fenix in Brood War.

Man, he was awesome. Why couldn't he just be let go like Raynor was?

All those poor Russian police officers on the "No Russian" level. I know you could get by without the civilian murders, but you had to kill the police. As far as I can remember, that's the only time I've ever felt guilty about killing anyone in a game. This feeling wasn't helped by the absolutely moronic premise of the mission. Murder hundreds of innocents so that I can potentially find a terrorist's financier or save hundreds and kill three terrorists. Hmmmmmmm

All those poor little Grunts in the Halo games. They're so cute with their funny dialogue, yet I have to mow them down left and right. I really start to feel like a dick when they panic and I'm chasing them down, picking them off one by one.

Then one hops out with a fuel rod gun and blasts me to kingdom come, which gives me new resolve to kill every one of the little bastards.

I actually don't remember having to kill
Zelos Wilder.
Maybe it's just been so long but i do remember "that person" betraying me but i do not remember having to kill them. In fact i seem to remember "that person" actually turning double agent after betraying me.

If you decided to talk to Kratos in Flanoir (by either getting more points with him or ignoring the people who try to talk to you in the inn), Zelos turns into a suicidal nutso and doesn't just betray you, but tries to kill you. You get to have Kratos on your team, but you have to kill Zelos for it.

I felt really really bad about killing Dwayne in GTAIV. I thought going with Playboy x was going to yield more cool missions, but he just up and left afterward. Next playthrough he fucking got it tho.

D'uh.
NINJA!

OT: General Knoxx. (Borderlands- Knoxx DLC) I found him fucking funny, and he actually seemed like a good guy, he just wanted to get the fuck off the planet and away from all the crazy people. (His commanding officer was a 5 year old boy who made him a grilled cheese out of an old sock...) Would most likely did the same shit in his shoes.
