Solid Snake. It would've given MGS4 a lot more closure.
Agreed. It would have added a lot more emotion to that one scene, as well... I think he kept Snake alive to keep the franchise alive.

The man who came up with the idea for Lost, the worst series in the world, and Albert Wesker of Resident Evil Fame. He got spiked by the Tyrant for god's sake...

Master Chief (Obvious).

Susannah Dean, from the Dark Tower series. EVERYONE dies except her and Roland, and I always though it was kind of a cheat for her to get out and meet 'The other' Eddie and Jake. On a side note, I felt Eddie's death was lame, though I think that was the point.

Jack Bauer

He goes berserk on revenge and ultimately has his sights set on the Russian president when at the last possible moment his only remaining friend Chloe convinces him that if he takes the shot he'll cause world war 3. All agents are instructed to kill on sight so if it comes out that Chloe talk to him she's aiding a terrorist, so he hands her the evidence she needs to prove the conspiracy then shoots himself so she won't be caught aiding him. Seconds later every agent ever busts through the door.

If he would have died from the bullet he took to the chest it just would have been incredible. But he somehow doesn't hit any vital organs then bites a dude's ear off then moves on to a lame sauce "Run Jack, Run" ending.

Odd Thomas, at the end of the third book (Brother Odd). The ending to that book completely destroyed my interest in the series.

I liked watching Odd Thomas mature a bit more with each book, or embrace his semi-heroic side.
Nope. He just keeps lapsing into depression; and far too often for a dude who regularly sees the spirits of the dead every day of his life.

Kind of a waste, really. I could see him becoming an excellent character for some sort of paranormal investigation series.

EDIT: Oh, and the screenwriters should have just stopped the Jason Bourne series after the first movie. It wrapped everything up; it gave closure. So naturally, the first thing your sequel must do (in order to justify there being a sequel) is shit all over it.

Oh, and thanks for the unnecessary amounts shaky-cam, assholes. It didn't add a bloody thing to my experience save for a migraine.

Master Chief is lost in slip space and goes into cyrogeneics, just how he started in the first halo
but not going to lie it would have been better if he did die

I think Warfield should have died at the end of Starcraft II. Giving Raynor the position of General maybe?
Could you perhaps at least warn of spoilers if not use the tags? I mean, really?

I've been playing through the campaign on a friends computer and am only eight missions in and this is a real kick int he shins to be honest.

OP should really put a spoiler warning in the title or first post I think.

Jack Marston instead of his dad
Think about this for a second, if that hadn't happened then would the game be as memorable as it was. Sure everyone loved that character and it was surprising to see that happen to him, but do you think a happy ending would have improved the game?

Think of how it reinforced the tone of the game in terms of the overall message that all actions have consequences, the depressing tone of both the end of an old generation and the beginning of a new one that is built on the sins of the past, and the whole futility of fighting against fate (John was fighting so Jack wouldn't have to be like him, only for it to turn out that way regardless). It also reinforced characters, be it everyone on the Marston Farm, or the betrayer who it was pretty clear was a Knight Templar, intolerant of any injustice he could find, as well as looking again at how the old "wild" characters were actually the more reasonable and moral ones, while the newer "civilized" group was completely in the wrong.

If anything John's death was probably the best part about the game for these reasons, as well as the fact that you always remember your favorite characters that die.

As for me, I've got a list of them:

The end boss of Tales of Vesperia. He was exactly like Abyss's one, only much less sympathetic. His death could have been a great ending, but instead he gets a cheesy redemption and walks off camera.
Halo: Reach, Jun. I'm sorry but having him live, but only revealing it in the legendary commentary was a dick move Bungie. Especially since his fate is now out of your hands. It would have been better to have him die with his squad than live on in someone else's control.
Isaac from Dead Space. This is more of a mercy kill than anything else. I imagine he's now unable to fix anything in a normal civilian environment now without horrible flashbacks.
Sonic. We all know the reason why here.
Sylar from Heroes, if only because the writers didn't know what to do without him, so whenever he developed, it was almost immediately invalidated. Yes, he was my favorite character, but seriously... (also, quite a few people in that show needed to die, but somehow kept finding a way around it. Sad that when it finally looked like it was getting good, it was cancelled).
Metal Gear Sold 3: Those motherfucking sons of bitches who set the Boss up! Anyone whose played the game up to that point and heard the truth will want that cutscene where Naked Snake becomes Big Boss to involve him pulling out one of his weapons and emptying it just for hearing what they did.

Reaver from Fable 2...
You get railroaded into helping this guy of dubious value for reasons unmentioned, the MFer kills a likeable character right in front of you, then double crosses you, twice, you help him escape a triple cross to his double cross while he talks shit about you the whole time and how much better he is than you.

All that is bad enough and made me want to kill him already. But then at the very end of the game, if you have the gall to actually watch the Big Bad's whole final monologue instead of just killing him, REAVER EFFING KILL-STEALS THE FINAL BOSS OF THE GAME. Then teleports into the ether before you get the chance to exact any sort of revenge in a game that's entirely about moral choices.

Actually, you know what? The script writers of Fable 2 need to die (or at least stop writing things. Anything. Ever.)

Worst Story Ever.

its fantasy it requires suspension of disbelief, so gz on that.
Secondly i can understand not liking mystery shows, or shows that require you to pay attention, but to say its all round poor is exageration and offensive to me, i mean for one that show has some of the best acting on television. I know im just gonna get ignored as a fan, but just because you dont like something doesnt make it terriable, for example, i really dont like football, i dont go round dissing it :p
Are you therefore insinuating that I lack the attention to enjoy mystery shows? I fear that you don't know me terribly well at all in that case. If you're really that offended by someone's opinion then, I honestly have no idea what to say about that. The point of a forum is to air your opinion and have others chat about it etc, not get upset when someone has an opinion counter to your own.

Also I agree, football is awful, a game where 11 men cry whenever someone gets within a mile of their hair gel, just isn't right... If you want a real sport then go for Rugby.

OT:Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2... no self respecting military-type would have such girly hair...

Sam Fisher's daughter "Whats-Her-Face." The "It was all a conspiracy" way of explaining deaths has been done and overdone.
I was annoyed with that too.

Harder to see why he's such an aggressive arsehole when he meets her again after like 3 levels.
