Chavs: How far have they spread?

I think there may be a chav culture in France (but probably called something different. When I travelled around France in March I saw a few dressed like this. Particularly around the Northern boarder in the rundown, poorer urban areas.

We don't have it too bad here in Exeter, Devon, but they do make walking around at night a little scarier. Personally I think we should send them to the war in Afghanistan. I think their bottle throwing and cussing would make make great decoys.

I described the typical chav to a few people in Australia when I was over there - they apparently call them "douchebags".

That's the name for them here in Canada, too... 'Preps' is another common name for them, though.

If you're a British teenager they will make your life hell. Especially someone like me with long hair/doesn't follow the mainstream.

You do, just a slightly different one.
I try not to generalise, but generally they're alright if you just leave em too it. However the trouble is that at the rate they're expanding the minority who cause trouble is quickly turning into quite a sizeable amount.
The best thing to do is just not to associate with them, I swear you feel yourself becoming more stupid just by being around them

Hard to avoid them when you live in a place like Birmingham. Its pretty bad here.

To clarify, I mean tracksuit-wearing, cheap booze-drinking, fake jewellery-wearing teenagers (or indeed older/younger). I'm British and it's a big problem over here. They are generally the cause for most of the vandalism, illegal drug-taking and all sorts of other nasty stuff in the country.

Basically, where do you come from, and do you have chavs? Feel free to discuss

In Scotland we call them NEDs but, yeah, they suck ass.

Yeah, in Cwmbran we just call 'em chavs, and they're like an infestation.

Not terribly brave though, they usually just hurl insults from across the road or pick on people who look like easy targets(me, for instance).

Over here in Sweden we call them Fjortisar.

They are everywhere. WE MUST RUN FROM THEM

It's not exactly the same thing. Swedish fjortisar are just kids trying to act over their age and making fools out of themselves in the process, yet remains ignorant to the fact that they are.

They usually do this by drinking moderate amounts of alcohol and acting like they are shitfaced, smoking their parent's stolen cigarettes and speaking, acting and dressing in a way that makes anyone with half a brain wish they weren't of the same species as them.

I always thought of people like this as bogans.

I think almost every country has overly defensive/aggressive, unintelligent, lower class, strong-accented people who try to emulate whatever "edgy" culture they see on TV in the most horrible, tasteless way possible, or just simply don't think of those things much and just want to get by.
