My sister is also an AWESOME singer and I really hope she joins a proper band. I mean I love soul music etc but a band would be so much cooler.
What are you talking about?
Proper bands don't have singers.

My 3 favorite bands have female singers: Within Temptation, Delain and Nightwish.

Plus you're forgetting the vaguely popular Paramore, Flyleaf, Lacuna Coil... and thats just recent bands.

I think there are other factors in play as well. Such as:

Band dynamics and structure. To work well as a band, you need certain types of people to play certain instruments or sing. Singers tend to be the outgoing, sociable types that thrive on attention. Women tend to gravitate towards that. Bass and drum players are usually quieter and just get on with playing, the lead guitarist is usually in between those. Also the singer is usually seen as the 'voice' of the band in publicity, and that is where the most 'unique' person in a band usually is, your selling point.

Smarts. Women realise that if they sing in other types of music, they can sing solo and not have to share the royalties with 3 other people, or at least negotiate better terms. "If you don't sign, I can get rid of you. Who is going to win, the pretty lead singer or the generic bass player?"

Incentive. Men have the incentive of: 'Learn guitar, get laid!'

What the fuck is rock and roll? The term means nothing.
Nah mate, it means everything. Music, mindset, way of life dude.

Anywho, for some grade A female rockers (who need some exposure), look up Grim Dylan on Youtube and Myspace 'n' shit.

I think people just tend to like the male voice more, is all. There are certainly great female artists out there, but they seem to be spread out in crappy genres or just suck.

It's not TOO hard to find a gigantic list of ALL female bands [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_all-female_bands]

Some of my favourite all-female or female fronted bands:

Epica
After Forever
Echoes of Eternity
Lacuna Coil
Lunatica
Kittie

They are all still making music (as far as I know) except After Forever, who unfortunately broke up just as I was starting to get into them. There's a few more I could name as well but I think you get the point.

They exist but I admit theres not half as many of them. If your issue is you want to listen to some female fronted/made music then search and find. If your issue is you want to start a band with a female then find one you jive with and try your luck. I'm not sure what else there is to say.

... you're saying they (the singers) do something else as well like The Beatles? Or are you saying that proper bands are big groups of instruments playing tunes by Glenn Miller and the like? If it's the first then I hate you for insulting Iron Maiden and if it's the second then I hate you for insulting The Beatles.

Well, the way it seems to me, proper Rock 'N Roll is about getting the testosterone flowing, and it might just be possible that that doesn't appeal to a lot of women. Of course that's not all there is to it, but some of the best songs do just that.

It's the fucking mainstream. Mainstream [particularily hip hop] artists focus mainly on the singer - no, ONLY on the singer, and since women are typically affected by mass popularity, it's only natural that they would want to be the main focus of attention - like all the others. I know of a female metalhead, gamer, drummer, with that said.

By and large this is definitely a problem but women are very represented on my MP3 player thanks to bands like Nightwish and One Without.

One of my favourite bands at the moment is Mumford and Sons. All male. Another of my favourite bands is Florence and the Machine. Indie rock. Female lead, with another girl on some instrument (can't remember which). I also love La Roux - female lead. Paramore - female lead. Evanescence - disbanded I believe, but female lead. Reverend and the Makers - male lead, female on keyboards/synthesiser, I believe.
Dude, i all of those bands are great. I never thought someone els would like pretty much the exact same music.

Mumford and sons is the best IMO out of those, i love the Irish influence and culture in their songs (they are English if you didnt know, not irish which is what many are led to beleive.). Too bad next to no one has heard of them here in the U.S.
